GH: August Discussion Thread

Watched 'City by the Sea' today... why didn't THAT James Franco show up to GH? I started loving James Franco's work all over again.

Sadly, the Brenda flashbacks just hurt. Those scenes were beautiful to watch the first time around, by the time the writers and producers tried recreating Sonny and Brenda with the 10th? 15th? 20th? Brenda clone, the magic was gone. Sam-Claire-Brenda... How funny to have them on screen at the same time.

Just speculating, but surely Carly will hurt Dante and Lulu, Sonny won't forgive her, he cuts ties with Carly, and Brenda becomes Sonny's forever love? It's hard to believe the writers are making Carly this tone deaf to what Dante has done for Michael "just because". This storyline is madness, even for Carly.

BTW, if you haven't seen Brianna Brown (lisa) play a psychotic serial killer on "Criminal Minds", it's worth watching. She plays a rich girl whose daddy cheated and abandoned the family for a mistress who was prostitute. She becomes a prostitute to kill other rich men. She was brilliant on CM.

My problem is, not necessarily Vanessa Marcil or Brenda, but the concept of her being this FORCE of an actress and/or character. I never "got" the Brenda character (and listening to VM go on and on about how much she loves this character more than any other she's played has me like, "uh... WOW!"). As a person who grew up studying theater, acting, writing, etc., I've learned to separate the character from the actor. Sometimes my dislike for both bleed together (Carly/Laura Wright), but most often, I can grasp who the character is apart from who the actor is. I get who Maxie is on paper and I like her presence on the canvas, no matter how much I can't stand Kirsten Storms. I never got who Ric Lansing was, no matter how much I enjoyed the work of Rick Hearst. To me, Brenda isn't really a solid, fleshed out, defined character. She's more like a personality. She's the pretty girl who giggles a lot that everyone loves because she's pretty and giggles a lot. Nothing terribly unique or necessary.

Oh, and I stand by my assertion that she looks as if she had some cheek scoopage done (yup! that's the clinical term).

There's is definitly something different about her face and the cheeks stand out. I don't know why mess with a good thing she's genuinely beautiful to me.

Back to the Brenda character, yes I agree Brenda Character oozes more personality than definitive fleshed out--- stand out qualities. She works because of all the dynamics created in the character history. That works because of the actress' charisma and chemistry with her co-stars historically. The personality is really what is lovable about the Brenda character, when there's enough of that a viewer can relate to then it simply works with no more really added to the character. Brenda is simple, smiles, lovable, passionate, loving, naive, not so innocent but harmless. That's really what works about her. I can see why some don't like the character much my original post was noting those who blames the actress for what is already established for the character

Lulu- Not feeling her, the actresses looks worse for Laura and Lukes Daughter but that is the only thing I buy. Not feeling her coupledom with Dante no chemistry

Dante- Ok with me , hate this long lost son angle but the character and actor is fine otherwise

Michael- Is ok

Spinelli- Annoying I would try to live with it except I have a feelign this is supposed to be his thing which is even more annoying.

Sam- Don't like somethign about this character

Claire- Love her, not sure y

These are the characters that are relatively new to me

I'm new to the board and have only been watching GH for about a year. I have a question I just have to ask you guys. Does anybody actually like Carly? Personally, I can't stand her, causing me to like all characters she's in conflict with, including Lulu who most of you seem to truly dislike. Any Carly fans out there at all?

And welcome to the board!

There's detroitpiston, who I think is absolutely yummy despite the fact that he's a die hard, unapologetic Carly/LW fan.

And you'll more often than not get a pro-Carly post from avid Carly-hater Cheap21 if Carly goes up against Olivia.

Other than that, thankfully, this board isn't as pro-Carly/CFF as many other places I've seen on the internet.

Thank you for the warm welcome. I see that there are some who actually do like her. Just goes to show how differently you can perceive a character :)

Is Denise Alexander no longer even on recurring? I was under the impression that she was, but simply got the Jackie Zeman treatment (maybe even worse)...

But on ABC's character bios, there is no page for her. There's one for Bobbie, Diane, Brook, Claire, Maya and I think all of the other recurring characters, but not one for Lesley...Anyone know anything about that?

It would be upsetting if she isn't on recurring or anything anymore, even though it would be hard to notice since it has been 10 months since we even saw her

:( :(

There's no such thing as "on recurring." Recurring just means "we'll call you if we want to use you." It's not an actual status, so an actor can't be taken off of it.

I once loved Carly, but the writers have deconstructed the character into a disturbing nothingness. She's loud, angry, and dumb as a stone... a lethal combination. I'm sure she has fans who see something different in her. I just don't see it. I think Laura Wright is a very likable actress, and a GOOD actress, so I'm surprised that she was cast in this role just for the writers to take her character down this road.

It was shocking enough that Denise Alexander was allowed to show up on GH the last couple of years from time to time and had actual dialogue. Often more than Jackie Zeman...
