Nina underwent treatment at a Baltimore clinic to correct her eye problem. Joe was suspicious when Leora and Kurt told different stories of how she was injured at home. Billy Clyde returned but Benny threatened him about taking Estelle away. Tom rehired Erica. Linc warned Langley that he has the goods on Langley’s past if anything happened to Phoebe. Garrett demanded more loot from Donna on the baby deal. Devon got desperate that Sean isn’t paying attention. Paul hired Brooke to write his campaign releases. Nina couldn’t believe that Cliff has been shacking up with Sybil.

Palmer loaned Donna money for her baby-buying scheme. Anne overheard Paul and Ellen admit their love. Paul insisted he won’t leave Anne, who pushed him into the spare bedroom. Devon went bersek when Sean called it quits. Brooke forced Cliff and Nina to patch up their misunderstandings while Palmer was frantic that his deception in delaying Nina’s treatment will be uncovered. Myrtle blackmailed Langley to convince Phoebe not to interfere with Kelly and Linc’s moving decision. Tom began falling for Erica’s seductions.

Nina moved in with Monique after learning that Palmer lied about her eye ailment. Chuck ranted about Donna giving money to Garrett for a baby, and Estelle cautioned that Donna may be a victim of a scam. Phoebe blew a fuse when Ann moved out on Paul and moved in with Charles and Mona. Leora's stepdaughter Carrie arrived, but Kurt doesn't want her around since he thinks Carrie's a tramp like her mother was. Tom admitted to Brooke that he's making another go of it with Erica Sean told Devon he loved another woman, and she figured it was Sybil.

Palmer learned that Daisy has been posing as Monique. He was stymied in his attempt to shoot her and later shot himself since he's lost Nina. Cliff must perform the surgery to save Palmer. Carrie told Leora that Kurt was responsible for the death of Carrie's mother, but wouldn't explain. Kurt broke down after he stopped himself from beating Carrie with a belt. Ruth reluctantly agreed that Tad could steady-date Suzanne. Estelle can't get a quickie divorce unless Billy Clyde is jailed for two years and Grover didn't want to testify against Billy. Meanwhile, Billy baffled prison guards by asking for shoe-polish. Anne decided to move back with Paul and declined to seek a divorce at this time, since it could ruin Paul’s political chances.

Alex confided to his secretary Terry that he and Iris had a fling years ago when he was penniless. Clipper, Terry’s flame, spied on Iris for Alex. Dawn introduced Dennis to her ranch-owner grandmother, Kate. Vicky suspected that Alex’s mind is on another woman while Iris freaked out when she recognized Alex. Ryan was wary that Col. Hassin is plotting against the Sheik. Reena despised her cousin, Samantha, whom Vicky favored as head of a TV station.

Texas portions: Mike’s empire collapesed when the Sheik died. Alex wouldn’t help Mike financially. Courtney defended Kevin’s surgery of the Sheik. Clipper recorded Hassin giving the order to substitute the Sheik’s pacemaker, which was the cause of death. Kevin rated at Reena for accepting Stryker’s teaching offer without Kevin’s approval. Iris remembered her affair with Alex and learned that he has since become a multi-millionaire.

Bay City portions: Joey admitted to Kit that Amy is coming on strong with him. Miranda milked Rachel’s friendship to find a weakness in her marriage. Buzz warned Blaine that she’ll never be able to get rid of him or Jordan. Rick dated Sally. Liz planned Tracy and Russ’s wedding. Greg was jealouse that Brad is going after Kit. Cecile revamped Brava to erase Pat’s memory. Jim worried that Pat won’t be a sober matron of honor.

Texas portions: Mike's out-of-town children, car racer Justine and singer Paige, were notified that Mike committed suicide. Alex blamed himself since he didn't keep an appointment with Mike because Alex was preoccupied with avoiding Iris. Samantha Walker kept publicity about the sheik’s death to a minimum so that Kevin's career won't be jeopardized until the autopsy. Dawn blamed Alex for Mike's death while ranch foreman, Max Dekker, was grieved.

Bay City portions: Rachel finally admitted to Mitch that she's carrying his child. He put the pieces together after hearing Tanner on a talk show. Jason's attempt to halt Russ and Tracy's wedding failed. The newlyweds honeymooned. Felice Carpenter arrived to work at Brava. Joey accused Kit of not caring that Amy is after him. Sally's eyes lit up after learning that Rick is a Holloway. Craig and Cindy made a pact for her to chase Brad so that Craig will have a clear field to Kit. Robert Delaney, Cory's natural father, wrote Clarice that he wants to see the child. Jordan forced Blame to cuddle after he convinced the cops she had been unwittingly used by Hazel.

Texas portions: Justin vowed he'd get even with Alex for Mike's suicide. Justin got drunk and reminded Reena of their torrid past. Kevin was cleared in the sheik's death when Ryan proved that the pacemaker had been switched by a murderer. Clipper blackmailed Hassim with a tape recording of Hassim's pacemaker-switch plot. Vicki was knocked out when Alex admitted he has loved Iris for 25 years even though Vicki was special. Rikki, Max's brother, envied Justin's car-racing reputation. Paige returned for Mike's funeral but only because the movie he financed for her folded. Bart chided Courtney about her crush on Kevin. Dennis arranged to buy the gallery to stay close to Dawn.

Bay City portions: Russ was slightly injured in an accident that Jason arranged. Russ and Tracy were married. Miranda ranted about Gwen being crazy about Taylor. Larry pressured Clarice to deny Robert's request to see Cory. Tanner blackmailed Rachel to get more publicity for his book. Margo spotted Blaine with Jordan at the casino opening and told Jerry. Rachel offered to do anything if Mitch would keep quiet about their baby. Amy joined Cecile’s plot to undermine Phillip. Cecile published bad publicity about Kit that caused another riff with Joey.

Apparently, there was a "John Porterfield" who served as a story consultant for B&B back in '93, but I can't confirm whether they're one and the same.

No, I think Ralph Ellis and Eugenie Hunt were the HW's by that point. I seem to recall seeing their names in the credits at the end of both the final CBS shows and beginning NBC ones.

Can someone help me w/ the links to other threads where FrenchFan posted other summaries? I know they're on this board somewhere....

All My Children

Billy Clyde escaped from the slammer after knocking his lawyer unconscious and disguising himself. Nancy wouldn't date Frank, so he took Betsy to Joe's birthday bash. Cliff performed successful surgery on Palmer, but suspected Palmer of planning a "non-fatal" suicide for Nina's benefit. Suzanne's father, Dave, forced her to break off with Tad because Tad's real father was homicidal. Benny received his divorce from Edna, but Estelle lived in fear of Billy. Carrie stole school test answers from Mark. Devon was cold in her love-making with Wally, although Ellen urged her to give it a try for Bonnie's sake. Phoebe blew up because Langley refused a teaching job which Myrtle had engineered, knowing that Langley is no more a qualified professor than the mail on the moon.

Kurt beat Leora to a pulp for cooking lobster instead of rump roast for his boss who's allergic to shellfish. Billy drugged and abducted Estelle. Ann campaigned for Paul. Monique and Palmer agreed to reconcile for Nina's benefit. Donna turned to Palmer for a final baby-buying payment. Frank told Nancy it's none of her business that he dated Betsy. Carrie failed to get stolen test answer, to her boyfriend Jerry, who she’s seeing on the sly without Kurt’s knowledge.

Palmer comforted Donna after Chuck walked out on her and her babybuying scheme. Monique dated Sean, believe it or not. Billy put Estelle in an air-tight casket (but was nice enough to drill holes in it), kept her hidden in a mausoleum, and ordered Benny to raise ransom money. Erica lied to Tom about seeing a decorator when she was actually making plans for a modeling career with Brandon Kingsley. Leora suffered a broken arm from Kurt's beating. Kurt arranged for Carrie to date his boss' son, Thurston Turner, even though Carrie's unwilling. Anne told Phoebe that she wants to stick by Paul's unloving side until he's elected.

Palmer developed a fever on the eve of Nina and Cliff’s wedding. Devon turned green when she spotted Sean and Monique modeling again but had lied to Tom. Billy threatened Langley, when he forbade Phoebe to pay Billy's ransom for Estelle. Donna moved into Palmer's mansion after Chuck retrieved and returned Palmer's loan for her baby-buying plan. Nancy refused to allow Frank to take Carl on a picnic with Betsy. Kurt hoped that Carrie's date with Thurston would insure a job promotion Donna worried that, Chuck ran to Tara, who insisted to Donna that she doesn't love Chuck.

Wow, Bartholomeuw...was not long for ATWT was he? He was two years on the show before Bunim came on right?

It seems that in these early summaries Brad Hollister was supposed to be a slight cad, flirting with Lisa to get the Hughes property, flirting with both Annie and Dee, screwing Melinda, but then he marries Annie, which made no sense. I never thought of him as a charmer, the guy wasnt that attractive or that charming (he was quite boring to tell you the truth) to see why all these women were going mad for him.

Why did they kill Melinda off? She seemed a good slut and she was Babs sister and Kim's niece and Bobs stepdaughter. She seemed to be the obvious person to have an affair James instead of Margo...but then I guess the Annie/Brad/Dee triangle was going

Weren't there rumors that it was Bartholomew who had the issues with Nancy and Chris?

I agree with you about Melinda. She could have been a major presence in future story for a long time.

I actually think some soap characters are better off WITHOUT a lot of family - like Donna on AW - but I can't help being sad that Barbara never got to have much of a relationship with Melinda or with Rick.

Wasn't this at a time when ATWT had a multi-tiered system of vets, some very important, others kind of important, others undefined? I guess that they just kept those they saw as most important, like Bob, Lisa, Kim, and others, like Sandy or Melinda, were written out. I can never remember if they wanted Carol to go or if the actress quit. The same for Joyce. It's always weird reading ATWT from the late 70s because there were so many important characters who were gone by like 1982.

They paired Carol with Steve, kind of like a Betsy/Steve warmer upper, but then they put her on recurring, my guess is that it was to make way for Steve Betsy, as no one ever mentioned Steve's marriage to Carol. She stuck around for a while coming in for weddings, etc, but then disappeared.

If Bartholemueu had problems with Nancy and Chris it kind of reminds me of what people have quoted Frances Reid said about JER getting rid of the old people like her..."Oh, he is an old goat himself!" I think he was the producer when Wagner's contract was up, and he offered her one day a week, and eventually knocked DM to recurring, and they never properly wrote Nancy off. And she left a week before the shows 25th anniversary. What a dumb ass he was!

SEPTEMBER 1980

All My Children

Written by: Agnes Nixon & Wisner Washam

Produced by: Jørn Winther

Minutes before Cliff married Nina, Sybil told him that she was pregnant with his baby. Erica ruined Tom's wedding anniversary plans when she went to see Brandon in New York. Myra reprimanded Daisy for dating Sean. Devon sought solace over losing Sean by hitting the bottle. Betsy told Ed that she's tired of being his "best pal." Phoebe and Ruth didn't attend the wedding so Daisy's presence went unnoticed. Palmer grieved as Cliff drove off on his honeymoon with Nina. Billy Clyde "convinced" Langley to let Phoebe give Estelle's ransom money to Benny and arranged to meet Benny in the cemetery. Donna refused to attend the wedding with Chuck. Tara caught the bridal bouquet.

Devon drunkenly moaned about Sean while making love to Wally, who put two and two together and bashed Sean. Tom and Ellen convinced Wally to stay with Devon, who isn’t aware that Wally knows about Sean. Thanks to Chuck, Billy was recaptured and Benny was reunited with Estelle. While Nina and Cliff honeymooned, Sybil swore to Betsy she didn’t get pregnant to trap Cliff but that she does love him. Ellen and Mark resumed dating. Monique refused Sean’s European trip offer. Kurt blew a gasket when Carrie wanted to live on the campus after she humiliated Kurt by being rude to his boss’s son. Brooke suggested to Donna that Palmer is using her as a substitute for Nina. Erica fouled up in keeping her modeling dates a secret.

Sean plied Monique with vodka stinger to weaken her sexual resistance. Carrie tempted Tad to share a joint and a beer. Kurt panicked that Joe would learn he slugged Leora again, after he threw out Carrie's marijuana and Carrie insisted on moving to a dorm. Palmer's eyes brightened when Donna confided about her sordid childhood relationship with her father. Erica signed modeling contracts while Tom fell for her sick act. But Brooke found out about Erica's lies and spilled the beans. Langley decided to use Phoebe's ransom money for Estelle as an investment. Devon was suspicious that Wally knows the score about Sean when he rejected her love-making advances.

Erica sharpened her claws against Brooke for revealing Erica's lies to Tom about modeling. Palmer gifted Donna with a new wardrobe and told Chuck she didn't want reconciliation. Anne stuck up for Paul when his opponent published rumors of Paul's affair with Ellen. Palmer told Nina that Cliff and Sybil were in each other's arms, but Cliff insisted he was merely helping her over a rough time. Tad felt guilty after allowing Carrie to get him high on pot. Langley gambled with the ransom money but told Phoebe that the police had kept it for evidence against Billy. Betsy cheered up Wally. Nancy was in an auto accident. Tom found Erica being treated royally by Brandon for the American Beauty promotion.

Mark proposed to Ellen, but Carrie has a crush on him. Before her surgery, Nancy told Carl that Frank is his real father. Tad passed out from using marijuana after he spotted Suzanne and her new beau, super jock Bruce Harding. Paul thanked Anne for publicly accepting his and Ellen's relationship while Anne was in the asylum. Anne refused to get affectionate with Paul, however. Carrie will be a drug runner for Jerry. Tom told Erica he's getting a quickie divorce. Betsy wished Frank the best when Nancy survived, and Frank decided to ask her to remarry him. Tara met Charlie's principal, Jim Jefferson.

Lee had a stroke when she thought Brent was arrested for shooting Julie. Marie realized that Jessica was her daughter when she saw her wearing a medallion Marie had left with the child she gave up for adoption. Marlena and Don took Johnny home. Jessica moved into an apartment with Sally. Jarvis insisted Alex vacate his Anderson position until things cooled down. Kellam fended off Tod's questions about his mother. Marie thought it ironic that Alex said he thought of Jessica as a daughter. Alex tried to win over Victoria, who is handling Mary's divorce.

Julie refused to move in with Doug until Lee recovers. Kyle underwent another operation and asked Maggie to stay by his side. Carol succeeded in seducing Josh. Chris, Mike and Leslie found a marina site. Chris gave Leslie an engagement ring. Josh had doubts about identifying Julie’s assaillant after the police picked up the wrong man. Jessica convinced Kellam that she continued tutoring Tod, but she felt uneasy about Tod’s feelings for her. Alex secretly signed a loan for Jessica when she refused his financing.

Marie confessed to Alice that Jessica is Marie's daughter. Trish accepted a singing tour to get money to hire detectives to locate Scotty and David. Kellam warned Alex to keep his divorce from Mary out of the publicity spotlight, but Mary won't be quiet unless nothing violent happens to David. Johnny wants Josh for a dad instead of Don. Maggie encouraged Kyle to believe he can walk again since she was once crippled like him. Victoria joined Mickey's firm. Liz told Neil that Kellam is trying to get Marlena to his bed. Jarvis suggested that Kellam bust up Liz and Neil by threatening to disinherit her. Kellam and Jarvis tried to blackmail Chris to return to Anderson or they won't give him money due which he needs for his marina project.

Neil broke off with Liz to save her relationship with Kellam, but she believed Jarvis's lie that Neil had accepted a bribe for the bustup. Alex bought Chris's marina site, but Leslie arranged a lease for Chris with Alex without Chris's knowledge. Lee can't move since her stroke and is psychologically leaning on Doug to help her recover. Jessica convinced Sally to keep her baby and was upset that Marie suggested adoption. Marlena disapproved of Don's broken promises to Johnny. Don and Liz commiserated about their lousy personal lives and fell into each other's arms. Kellam offered Marlena sympathy while Liz and Don “blazed” on the campaign trail.

Liz and Don were ashamed of their one-night fling and he resolved to tell Marlena. But Jarvis and Kellam had already arranged for Marlena to hear about it through the grapevine. Lo and behold, Joshua is actually Mr. Talbot, son of Sunny, Kellam's wife who died under mysterious circumstances. Only Mrs. Chisholm knows the whole story. Sally couldn't accept motherhood, and Jessica again blamed Marie for putting the adoption bug in Sally's ear. Mickey accused Maggie of getting too involved with Kyle, who concentrated on the married redhead now that his-football career is kaput. Cassie smoldered when Tod's eyes lit up for Jessica. Doug and Julie kept a depressed Neil from gambling. After a nude swim, Joshua found Carol snooping through his wallet.

But Amanda begged Jennifer to stay after Ben announced he's leaving for Europe and Amanda is free to divorce him. Kelly moved into Nola's boarding house after Tim beat him to a pulp. Rita and Ed argued about becoming chummy with Alan and Hope. Diane learned that Joe Bradley offered to sell the Thorpe tapes to Mike. AMC: I enjoy reading these monthly summaries because it gives more indepth going-on's not found in the 25th anniversary book. I had no idea that Ann escaped from the mental hospital and tried to hurt Ellen, nor that her husband Paul was running for office and she only stayed with him till the election was over.

Plus, I had no idea that Tara was back for months until she met this guy Jim. I'm also noticing the start of isolating Erica from the rest of the canvas starting in 1980 with her association with Brandon Kingsly.

ATWT: The Dobson's aren't ruining the show as Ive heard other people say. Yes, there is a huge focus on the younger people but Lisa/Grant/Don/Joyce/Ellen/David/John/Kim/Bob/Carol are still featured along with the younger characters/new characters.

GL: I was still surprised that Holly was still around when her brother Andy returns to town. I'm noticing the starts of this sex-tape storyline with his flirting with Katie and mention of writing a book. Plus, I can see why Ed/Holly were thought of as endgame due to Alan/Rita's flirting with each other and Ed/Holly being pulled together. I've wondered if Holly had stayed, if the whole Ed/Rita/Alan would have turned out differently.

Finally, I love reading about Vanessa's first months on the air.. certainly not the upstanding member of the community that she was later in the show's run.

Y&R: Never knew that Julia/Brock flirted, Victor had an intense interest in Lorie back in 1980 and that Peggy/Jill were both interested in Paul's brother Steve. Funny how even back in 1980, Patty was giving off signs that she was not all there LOL

Love the intro of Jabot. Was Brenda Dickson playing Jill or had Deborah adair taken over as Jill by the time she landed at Jabot? Finally, I love reading about the cult storyline with Nikki/Paul plus Greg moving on from Nikki to April.

If only storylines were like this now :(

I love the summaries also, especially ATWT as this was when I really started watching it (as opposed to it being on in the background while I had to take a "nap" as a little kid, or ate lunch then so my mom could watch her "story." I think that the problem with the Dobsons this first time around that the show was a bit creaky in the way it told its supposedly newly relevant stories. The focus was still on some of the "older," (what, they were in their 40s then, but I still thought of Bob and Lisa as being older..) characters, but they became more divorced from each other, as the Dobsons wittled away that "family," feeling that ATWT had at the time, and wouldnt get back until Marland returned. Nancy and Chris were always in the middle of everything, even if they had no storyline, but they were pushed into a closet and left a big void on the show, as Bob and Kim were still to young at that time to take over the elder couple mantle. Nancy's kitchen had more action and people coming and going then Bob and Kim;s house did during Marland, and while it was a little goofy, it centered things and brought everything together, to loose that while also making all the rest of the changes set the show adrift.

The younger characters werent really that vital or interesting...at least as they seem on page. I get from ready this that Brad was supposed to be a young, romantic, 70's bahelor cad, who decided to change his ways once he fell in love with Dee..but you didnt really see that....(even as a baby homo I thought Brad was a dud) maybe it was the actor. The Annie and Dee actresses were lethargic at best. Eric Hollister was boring and ill defined as was Cricket. On the older folks side Lisa was slowly being relegated to becoming a fluttering busybody instead of the good/bad girl she was before, Grant was an idiot to believe Joyce's dumb plot, David became increasingly annoying and nutty acting as he raged against John, Ellen was her typical passive boring self.

The succeses the Dobsons did have at the time were Barbara/James/Margo (obviously as those character made it for the long hall) though James never did have the depth and conflict of their own Alan Spaulding..(right after he married her James became the cartoon villian Marland brought back to raise hell..) and John manipulating those around him, while still being a sad, tragic figure. Kim and Nick became a popular couple, but the Steve/Andrea storyline limped into nothingness quick. It wasnt until their second tenure that the Dobsons hit their stride

Nasty Vanessa was fun. Its funny reading the synopsis, where Ross decides that poor, boring and plain Evie is the kind of woman for him, not Vanessa. No straight guy in their right mind would make the choice for the simpering Evie over the sexually aggressive and bitchy Vanessa.
