It was nice to see Terry Lester do something completely different as Lucinda's brother Royce on ATWT. He played someone with multiple personalities, kind of a Jekyll and Hyde thing. He worked well with Kelley Hensley as his love interest. ( I can still see them together on that great location shoot on the Amalfi coast).

Well... i don't think ANY of them were immediately liked by fans EXCEPT for Epperson. And it has only to do with the fact that she herself is so SWEET, so FRIENDLY, so LIKEABLE. Ashley was a much more likeable, affable character when she played her... but she wasn't Ashley, either. she lacked Elieen's stuck up bitch princess portrayal. Walton was REVILED by many until she made the part her own and grew into the role. I can honestly say, I called her the "Jill Impostor" at LEAST until 1995. I didn't like Bergman, and still don't. He looks and acts like a damn newscaster.... not that SEXY, SWAGGERING Jack Abbott that can make you cum just by looking at you. Terry Lester just had that "something". Bergman got Emmys, but to me, those mean nothing when it comes to fan acceptance. Lots of people love Bergman NOW... but you'll find the vast majority of those who do, never watched Lester. Those who watched Lester, almost always liked him best. MarkH may disagree with me on this, he has WEIRD taste in recasts... he likes Victoria Mallory and Deborah Adair... YUCK!

Ahem, weird, LOL! I think my preferences for both Mallory and Adair show what I prefer...grounded, realistic, not over-the-top, relatable, shades of likeability PLUS another side. I'd rank Adair well above Mallory, though.

I agree with you though, about how long it took Walton and Bergman to be accepted as recasts. I don't think Epperson was ever accepted either--I agree with DeeeDee's assessment of her (and Susan Walters, by the way). Eileen Davidson's Ashley is NOT a nice woman! She is not a treacly heroine. She calls Jack on his sh!t, she showed great selfishness when pursuing Victor (who was married with children), she can be snooty and unwelcoming. But she manages to do all this and STILL be one of the show's driving female protagonists with a fanbase. All those shadings went away with Epperson...my read of her was all-sweets all-the-time.

Although, when I rewatch clips of her (like that "Brad's proposal rap" I posted on Youtube), I see she wasn't all sweet. She had a b!tchy side to her too. But I never accepted her for a moment.

But I beat against the current. I'd accept Shari Shattuck OVER Epperson ANY day. So don't listen to me, LOL.

Davidson vs. Epperson? Davidson.

Lester vs. Bergman? Lester.

Dickson vs. all the other Jills? Dickson, Dickson, a thousand times, Dickson.

I'm not sure if she's written that way. Ashley suffered and suffered for most of Davidson's first run -- she was always punished for any of her sins, having mental breakdowns and needing men to come save her. In many ways she was more of the treacly, cliched "nice" woman than most Y&R heroines of that era, aside from Traci or Cricket. The main difference is that Davidson is such a cold actress, but I'm not sure if that balances out the writing or just makes some of it even more uncomfortable, like the awful way Ashley came across in her 2008 return before yet another Ashley goes crazy/Ashley tormented and loses baby saga.

Well... Mark, it depends on which era you discuss. I think no other Jill compares to Dickson of the 70's. 80's... not so much. But Adair just seems to play any part she's cast in the same way. And she just doens't have much screen presence to me. My dislike of Mallory is the way she SPOKE. so measured, so POLITE, so unnatural. She's just a pale comparsion to Lynde, for me. And you like SHATTUCK over Epperson!! OMG! Let's take your temperature, sweetie! I would like to see on youtube the scene where Epperson goes off the wall and starts to stab her pillow with a paring knife, and Jill runs in and has to wrestle it away from her. that was spooky and chilling.

Nah.

Traci & Cricket were cookie cutter heroines especially Cricket.

Ashley was always different cause she was prickly nor was she vapid. She was smart, driven & knew her own mind.

I'm sorry, I worded that poorly. I meant that Traci and Cricket were basically cookie cutter heroines. I don't think most of the other major women on Y&R at that time, like Nina, Jill, Lauren, Nikki, were so much in that mould. I put Ashley closer to Traci and Cricket than any other major female characters on Y&R at that time because it seemed like after a few years many of her stories became about having breakdowns and Victor saving her, losing Victor, Steve Lassiter saving her, losing Steven, etc.

Nikki

MTS is/was second only to Genie Francis in the ingenue business.

But through all that Ashley never lost her edge until Eileen left.

Ashley was still intelligent & driven even when her love life was a mess.

She's more Ryan's Hope Jill than AW's Alice.
