The new series is doing quite well - the Time of Angels 2-parter looks set to break the curse of the new series' "first two-parter of the season is always crap" rule. And Amy Pond is an ongoing enigma, brilliantly played by Karen Gillan. There just seems to be a real easy confidence to the way they do the show by now, that it is a finely oiled machine and the formula needn't be mucked with too much, but they have changed things up by making the truth about Amy an ongoing subplot. Matt Smith, meanwhile, is dazzling - prickly, irascible, secretive, mysterious. So many Doctors mixed in, yet totally unique. I think he is much more the "fairy tale"/strange man from the stars type and is less romantic and much more familial with Amy. He has an air of authority and secrecy like some of the older Doctors, and instantly seems older and more mature, as well as more biting, than the Tenth Doctor - I think the character is quite well-established already, while Tennant's Doctor, though excellent, was not really fully formed until a year or two in.

I think it helps Matt Smith that he doesn't have any baggage from Tennant's run -- Tennant had Rose, and many people preferred Rose with Eccleston. They have also toned down the lonely last of the Time Lords angst, and added more quirkiness. When I first read about how Smith was an old soul and that his age wasn't important because he projected the ancient nature of the Doctor, I wasn't sure, but Smith does a great job of showing this onscreen. He also plays up the Doctor's alien nature in a way I haven't seen since Tom Baker.

This is a spoiler article for an episode later this season.

I think Smith's Doctor is actually darker than Tennant's. It's just under the surface, seething, whereas they went for bombast at either end of the emotional spectrum with Ten. I loved him but he only rarely scared me. Eleven does often. He says and does things to Amy Ten would never have done - like gaming her like this re: the crack in time. Sylvester McCoy's Doctor would've though, as might Hartnell's. Jon Pertwee would've ordered her around the same way this one does.

The tabloids seem to have the knives out for the show this year. First there was a lot of hype in the Daily Mail about the show becoming too "sexy" and too "violent", and now there's complaints because Doctor Who Confidential flew Matt Smith to Venice.

I thought it was fine. A bit fanboyish about Van Gogh, but Tony Curran gave an excellent performance. The conceit of "Let's show this historical person how awesome everyone thinks they are," can be ridiculous, but again, Curran made these scenes work. Karen Gillan did a wonderful job as Amy being a soulmate to Van Gogh for reasons she didn't quite understand.

What did you think?

I like it when famous screenwriters get these 'guest stints'. That said, I agree: it was fine, nothing Earth-shattering, but an OK episode overall. The press seemed to have liked it, though there were one or two negative reviews. :)

    • I am so happy now. Reminds me of the 80s show I loved. Ron really did the cast and fans dirty. The only people complaining are those who only knew Ron and his whiplash plot driven stories
    • 1985/86 wrapped up during the weeks of May 12-18, 1986 and May 19-25, 1986. Here's how the sophomore slaughterer, sophomore surprise, and the four soaps wrapped up the season. The Cosby Show - Denise's Decision (season 2 finale, May 15, rating 31.8, #1): Denise's decision about what college she will attend becomes complicated when Cliff and his father give their advice. Dallas - Blast from the Past (season 9 finale, May 16, rating 24.9, 3rd): The joy surrounding Pam and Mark's wedding day fades as J.R.'s attempt to outwit Angelica puts Jack and Sue Ellen in danger. Pam awakens to a surprise in her shower. Murder, She Wrote - If the Frame Fits (season 2 finale, May 18, rating 21.7, 6th): Jessica is spending her holidays with an old friend, Lloyd Marcus. His daughter is found murdered in her house and her husband Donald becomes the prime suspect. Dynasty - The Triple-Cross (May 14, rating 20.5, 9th): Ben gains control of the contracts in the South China Sea after tarnishing Blake's reputation. Steven is stopped in his attempt to reveal Adam's secret. Sammy Jo and Clay have a romantic evening. Knots Landing - The Longest Night (season 7 finale, May 15, rating 20.0, 10th): Karen vanishes after closing Lotus Point. Val sees Cathy and Ben together. Tipsy Peter visits Abby. Gary finds Val on the beach. Falcon Crest - Captive Hearts (May 16, rating 18.8, 12th): Chase is shot during Maggie's escape. Angela sends Lance to break up Melissa and Eric. Jordan is arrested. Emma advises Li-Ying. Dynasty - The Vendetta (season 6 finale, May 21): Alexis plans the ultimate revenge on Blake. Claudia is trapped behind the flames when she sets her room on fire. Sammy Jo and Amanda fight for Clay's attention. Blake learns about Ben's acquisition. Falcon Crest - The Cataclysm (season 5 finale, May 22): Chase fights for life. Jeff takes Greg and Jordan hostage. A huge earthquake strikes.
    • Source for this? Especially since Benz was already on AMC as Linda Connor.

    • @soapfan770 1995/96 to 1999/2000 were not very good in primetime. CBS and ABC both had primetime mess eras, and that's how NBC got away with their Thursday garbage shows finishing in the Top 10. Remember too that ABC was sold to Disney in 1996.  As for ABC primetime mess era, it started with the Top 10 fallout of Roseanne and ended with the breakout success of Who Wants to be a Millionaire. Monday Night Football and Home Improvement pretty much kept ABC alive in that era.
    • This show is miles better under the new writers. It's really a condemnation of Carlivati, because he had the characters and history to write good soap. Instead, he turned it into a joke and a farce. I've heard some people says DAYS is now "too talky." Miss me with that stupid analysis.
    • I always wondered if Jackie wasn't going to be recast after being persumed dead... if Marland was going to pair Evie and Justin as a couple reunited in grief over Jackie's death. The one consistent thing I noticed about Evie during those months she was still on the show was that she was kind of a second mother to Phillip after Jackie's 'death' and Elizabeth no longer on the canvas.   But then one of the three interim writer teams decided to pair up Helena with Justin.. which left Evie even less to do than she had at the start of 1983. You're right that Evie was a unique character on the soap.  She was sweet and trusting, yet she had a quiet strength that made it difficult to push her around (at least when the Dobson's were writing her).  The Ben/Amanda/Eve triangle was an interesting triangle because neither of the women were evil... and Ben did have chemistry and a connection with both women.   It had a pretty decent run from 1978/9 to 1982 before Amanda was spun off into her mother's new marriage to Mark as the other woman.
    • Lots of fast-forwarding in today's episode. The best parts were the Lulu and Tracy scenes and Chase in the tank top. And once again, a horrible cliffhanger with Sonny.
