Because, as a great woman once said, "Dreaming is free."

Someone ever at Direct made a comment about picking up the show. They said to send emails in order to measure viewer support. Maybe they just want us all on their mailing lists.

Why are people thinking Direct TV is going to pick up a soap again? They did it with Passions and if I remember correctly it actually had decent ratings but the cost was to much to handle.

Direct, along with all the other cable companies, will be buying up content now that there is a NBC/Comcast deal. They will find a way to make cost work. If they do not pick up World Turns, it will be some other show. As I said before, even Verizon wants exclusive content. Who ever thought that the tele company would want to own a show? The era of starting a network like HBO is over. Instead, each provider will be airing shows/movies aimed at certain demos to build business. There have been a lot of articles about this sort of thing--cable wars--in the newspapers so check them out.

You're spot on about the demos of Passions--that played a big part I'm sure.

Sorry I didn't quite mean silly. OLTL and AMC have always been *my* shows, but ATWT basicallyc oes next and I do have a lot of affection for the show and if I was being honest, would rather see it stick around than sme shows that are. And I agree, I think it's admirable to fight to the end for your show (and I consider Ruxton and SaveATWT friends on here, so it's nothign personal against them)--it's just, as you say, it does neither them nor their cause any favours to follow each ATWT saving post with a comment about how awful AMC is an how it will inevitably die anyway--like that somehow makes ATWT's death more palatable? I just don't get it--and from a strictly logical point of view it comes off as silliness--there are no real facts to point out that AMC is going anywhere anytime very soon at all.

*gets off high horse*

Eric, I'm only joking about AMC. I hope the show does great along with all of the other soaps. I support the genre, even stick up for the majority of writers including Sheffer who it seems everyone hates. I am shocked by the good ratings, however, because of everything lousy I've read about Pratt along with Branco's Boycott AMC rampage. To be honest, I liked the show back when they had the trans character and wish they had kept her. The actor was great. I felt Pratt gave AMC an edge, something that is nice to find on daytime.

It's funny how DOOL's success doesn't send some signals to Bloom and Frons as how do you keep the numbers and have small increases.

They are delusional.

There really is no mysery to these Days numbers, either. It's about weighing up your assets, losing the fat, and solid work both in front of and behind the scenes.

The thing is this. Days didnt chose to do what it did. It was forced too. They made a bold veryy risky move in cutting John & Marlena. It worked. In doing that, and cutting other fat, the were forced to rediscover both Maggie & Caroline. and with a smaller cast the show was forced to make connections and with limited sets the show started to feel like more of a community. They got lucky.

Of course good planning & plotting & a classic soap tale sure helped. And how they executed all of that and reated relationships the fans stayed tuned in and the show grew. I hope they can keep it up. They do deserve it.

Other soaps could do it, but are to lazy.

Oh, and Cordy staying uninvoled? Number 1 reason Days has been able to thrive.

I do find it funny that some fans bitch about wanting more sets and a bigger cast. Why? The smaller cast and few sets is what helped get this show back on track.

I've just seen it a second ago, but I wonder if this Renew/Cancel Index TV by the Numbers talks about can be applied to soap operas.

The Renew/Cancel Index is a show’s Season To Date adults 18-49 rating divided by its network’s Season to Date average 18-49 rating. If a show’s season to date 18-49 ratings average equalled its network’s 18-49 average, the show would have an Index of 1.00. Without special factors, scripted shows that were more than 10% below their network’s average are typically canceled by the end of the broadcast primetime season.

Factors that could cause a show to be renewed with a well below average Index:

  • (F) -Fridays: Shows airing on Fridays have been renewed with significantly lower than average Indexes.
  • (S) – Syndication: Shows nearing syndication (66-88 episodes), often have economic factors that trump ratings leading to renewal.
  • (T) – Third Party: Shows that have a portion of their cost underwritten by a 3rd party can be renewed with substantially lower ratings.
  • (P) – Produced by the network’s production company – For shows on the bubble, being produced by the network’s corporate production company can be a survival advantage. For real losers, it’s unlikely to help.

As always, this is an intriguing hypothesis.

The question is: What would be the denominator? The network's ratings during the daypart? Would it include shows like The View or TPIR?

I never tried this calculation, but I once did put soap ratings in the context of the other network fare in the daypart as well as the syndicated fare. Soaps didn't look very good.
