AMC: DC is really out and AMC next soap to go

I think Frons moved AMC because he intended on saving it over OLTL, but the move, the critically unpopular state of the show, the writer changes (D&D weren't at the top of anybody's list), the inability (or lack of desire) for some of their top actors to make a permanent move does put it on the shakiest of grounds. It sort of reminds me of the Leno/Conan debacle (bad executive decisions), hopefully it'll end better. DAYS fired some of its biggest stars and look at it now, a success story, so it's not impossible.

The first part, I just don't agree with. I know I'm in the minority on that one, but I don't think Frons' moved AMC to save it over OLTL. I think moving AMC to LA is his way of thinking he is saving the show, and moving OLTL into an ABC owned studio and out of a rented one was just a wise financial decision. If they wanted to ax OLTL, they could have kept them where they were until cancelation and rented out the space formally occupied by AMC that they own.

Everything else you said, I completely agree with. I'm anxious to see the demos because if AMC can increase in demos in the upcoming months and remain consistent throughout sweeps, it would give them the guarantee of money coming in for a foreseeable amount of time to help the show's budget problems and relax advertising issues.

I understand your frustration, and yes it is unfortunate, but in this climate it is worthy of such a discussion. If it is true AMC had the option of many other places, why the hell would they chose L.A? Was it to force the hands of all these vets and NY based actors to part ways with the show and it backfired? Doesn't make sense.

Read my post in the Moving/Not Moving thread concerning the Ugly Betty Law passed in CA. That's why All My Children ended up in Los Angeles.

Thanks for posting that, Jonathan. I just read it. You made a good point because if AMC is eligible for the tax credit, it is a major benefit, but at the same time, it may come with a reverse effect.

I would definitely say it's JHC who handles the finances. I honestly think that Frons' likes her because she has no vision and will do as she's told and I'm sure all this time, Frons' solution to the budget problem was to use less sets, chase away high profile vets and drop actors to recurring until that just didn't work anymore. I'm sure higher ups stepped in and told him to come up with a more practical solution and he thought LA would be great and found a way to convince Disney and win over fans by making everything seem flawless leading up to the move. But of course, problems always seem to surface.

I didn't ask about the move. It's my opinion based on many discussions on this board that AMC could have moved elsewhere in the NYC metro-area as opposed to going all the way across country. After all, they are renting this studio in LA and it's technology is very advanced. Something tells me they would be paying the same fees to rent this studio as they were paying for the maintenance for their NYC studio. And if anyone on here know anything about that, I'd love to hear it because it certainly would shed light on many issues with the show.

I'm sure however, Frons found a way to have Canary, Lucci and a few other's vets paid for completely for their commuting and in the upcoming months, I wouldn't be the least bit surprised when those vets leave the show as they were only remaining with the show to make the move look like some easy task. And as we know and as it's been rumored, DC will be leaving and DC certainly can afford to live the rest of his life anywhere he wants and how he wants. He doesn't need the money from AMC. The same goes for Lucci. I'm sure they have their cast under a gag order.

And just look at it this way, Lucci and Canary didn't need to move with AMC, and they didn't. They are commuting, but for how long? You can read between the lines that Frons begged them to make it appear like they'll be here until the very end. If either of the two said "hell no, we aren't moving with AMC to LA," it would have turned into a huge nightmare for AMC and fans would have tuned out, and there would have been really bad publicity, but as other's have pointed out, ABC made the move look like it never happened, like one night everyone went to bed in NYC and the next morning they woke up in LA without a scratch on their body.

Did the show even pay them to relocate? From what I read each actor had to pay their own expenses if they moved.

The show needs SL more than she needs the show, and if they were to lose her........

I completely agree, especially with the bolded part.

Each actor did have to pay to relocate, but, from what I was told vets like DC did not (and I'm assuming the same was applied for LaLucci). He has wanted out for quite some time and ABC would not let him out of his contract prior to the move and they are covering all of his expenses. But once he is able to leave, he will be returning to the east coast.

And I totally agree with you, Zendall Fan, AMC does need Lucci. She is the face of AMC.

I've heard a few things about their new studio, not being totally ready yet... has anyone heard anything about that?

BTW: has any actor from AMC given any interviews about being in LA or about the new studio or life on the set yet? I haven't seen or heard of any interviews and I find that rather interesting...

Interviews with Susan Lucci, Debbie Morgan, Bobbie Eakes, and Julia Barr. They talk about life on set, and being in LA and stuff.

Thanks for passing that along. Debbi Morgan looks fierce as always!

Loved Julia Barr's comments!!!

I wonder when they are going to show the inside of the set, during filming and stuff.

First LA taped shows are set to air February 2nd

I meant show the inside of the studio during filming, not inside of the set, sorry about that. Like when GH got the new hospital set, they did a tour of it so I would expect them to do a tour of their new high-tech studio.

I wouldn't want to write for any ABC soap as long as Frons is controlling all the stories.

I think AMC will be cancelled in 2012 if the key demo ratings continue to decline. Despite the move OLTL is still cheaper than AMC to produce.

LOL do we know that for sure? Initially costs after the move will be more expensive regardless--it'll take a couple of months to really see what AMC is costing.

Because ABC is wanting to focus all their major tv production work in LA, they already have the studio space there, etc. I know they were offered some interior states but those don't make a lot of practical sense--there's far less space for tv production there, the ABC studios there prob don't have much room anyway, and there's a far smaller acting pool to draw from. I don't see why that option would make more sense?

Nobody wanted the headwriter job at AMC? By nobody, I suppose that is referring to the same tired hacks that have been switching from soap to soap and getting nowhere. US soaps need to take a leaf out of the UK soaps, injecting new talent like Bryan Kirkwood (Hollyoaks, now going to EastEnders) and people that have risen up the ranks (like Deiderick Santer, EastEnders) has kept the genre fresh. Look at how well Ron Carlivati did when he first started as HW, or even LML's early days at Y&R (I know it's a tired example that's quickly losing it's relevance).

Hell, I'd take the job of HW at AMC if nobody else will do it. I sure as hell wouldn't be doing cousins falling in love and insta couples that switch from week to week.

Word, to all you wrote. What I don't get is they hired that ex Coronation Street HW (Darren Little?) for the writing team last year... Why has he never been promoted?

I know I'm starting to get a reputation on here for being a Polyanna with AMC--but I just find much of this conjecture borderline ridiculous. It's becoming less and less absed on rumours that don't even have partial quotes in the media to back things up--it sounds liek the same friends of a friend who said AMC and OLTL were fusing together in 2004, etc. Even to say that AMC sealed its fate when it hired McTavish in 1997 (as wonderful as Broderick's tenure was, ratings began falling under her in '96--in fact ratings briefly climbed a bit under McTavish's awful reign) just is... kinda ridiculous. There have been a number of great periods (shortlived, I admit) since then and it certainly hasn't been as awful as much of GL, ATWT and, yes, my much loved OLTL have been since '96 (OLTL was mired in awfulness for much ofthe past 15 years from when Griffith left Malone in '96 on)

Just sayin' :P

What makes you think the things I mentioned didn't come from someone connected in the media or someone well established within the network who just cannot come forward at this time and say it themselves...

Just saying ;)

But as always... everyone is entitled to take what they read and register it as they wish.
