Guiding Light Discussion Thread

I'd argue that Conboy might have been the worst thing to happen to GL. Taggart/Culliton's breif HW stint in 2002 showed that the show still had potential to be really good again. Cowboy just tore that all down. The show was in much worse shape when Ellen Wheeler took over. I mean I actively dislike Wheeler's run too, but she had even less of a budget to work with than Conboy did.

@Spoon I can't say it doesn't bother me that John Conboy more or less fired Kimberly Beck from Capitol in 1983. In 1990, Conboy became executive producer of Santa Barbara. SB writer Patrick Mulcahey quit the show after just one meeting with him. Mulcahey later wrote for Guiding Light for a while.

GUUUYS...someone started a thread on X about how someone needs to start a streaming service to show old soaps...that SoapNet happened too soon...that GUIDING LIGHT, for instance, has 72 years worth of episodes just gathering dust in warehouses...

And I'm like, 😭😭😭 no, my dear fellow fans, most of those tapes are likely gone forever.

Soap fans are like silent movie fans, certain someone unwittingly has what they want sitting in a garage or attic.

But it was nice to see so many people say they would love another SoapNet-style channel.

Well, I do agree that an app devoted to old soaps would be nice. I just don't know how much is available.
