Ben's a pretty common name though.

I sometimes wonder how Jerry ver Dorn survived on GL throughout the '80s. I can only assume he was beloved backstage. I remember when he gave the goodbye to Charita Bauer when she passed away. He'd only been on the show 5 years! Yet they had razed through so much of their cast in that time, somehow he actually had become the elder statesman.

I'm not sure any other soap has ever gone through their cast in such a short space of time.

I would argue that in a universe where your exes are named Calla, Blake, and India, Ben is a little rarer (ed note, I forgot about Ben Reade)...

It has become my life's work to prove this theory - Soap writers who repeat first names within a character's history rarely care about cannon, and are invariably hacks who failed to entertain long time viewers.  Who would argue that the writers who created Ben Warren or Sarah Shayne were better than those who created Ben McFadden and Sara Mcintyre?  If a writer lacks the creativity not to reuse a common name, they usually lack creativity in plots as well.

Yes, Alan and Rita had sparks galore. If she had set her sights definitely on Alan, think of the fireworks that a longterm Rita/Alan/Hope triangle would have engendered! Yikes! Shades of AW's Rachel/Steven/Alice!

Right, we were lucky to have Ross Marler and JvD for as long as we did. Somewhere along the line, he truly was TGLs elder spokesperson, and the actor clearly loved the show. TPTB were idiots for taking him, of all people, off contract.

More than likely, the principle reason was that LK quit. Marland in general was not adverse to carrying on and improving stories began by previous writers. In any case, Rita was a complex, interesting and viable character who could have provided the show with storyline potential for years. It's a shame we lost her, no matter what the reason was.

I heard that Marland didn't have a good handle on the Rita character and that she lost some of her complexity once Marland took over.. and that the actress quit.  That was a rumor I'd read awhile ago so not sure if accurate or not.  It's a shame she opted not to return in the late 80s when Long/Curlee were interested in bringing her character back... they would have had a field day writing for her like they did for Roger/Holly

Not all writers "get" all characters, which ends up being unfortunate in a medium such as this, because so many different scribes end up taking over and being responsible for the core characters over the years. I do think Long and Curlee would have  gotten a handle on Rita, if given the chance to write for her.

As good a writer as Marland was, I feel like his writing for GL characters was (in the episodes I have seen) oddly flat, with a few exceptions (like Nola, Tony [although he got on my nerves] or KV's Morgan). He seemed much more at home on ATWT.

ITA. Morgan and Kelly on TGL were strikingly similar to Laura and Scotty from GH, a show which Marland had written with great success before moving to Springfield. He certainly understood and wrote better for his own creations like Nola than he did for characters who .existed before his arrival. His work on ATWT was significantly stronger., however.

Try as I might, I cannot think of a single legendary writer who was consistently excellent on every single show s/he penned. Even Agnes Nixon stumbled somewhat on Loving, Pat Falken Smith on RsH, Marland on TD, Claire Labine on OLTL and TGL, the Dobsons on ATWT, etc.

I think the character from the 70s that Long would have done well writing for (if she hadn't been killed off before Long started) would have been Jackie played by Cindy Pickett. It was exactly the kind of self-empowered female Long specialized in writing.

By the way I was just looking up the recast Carrie Mowery and found an obituary. Is this the same person?

It seems to me that head writing is a lot like chess, in that you have a few players and you have to plan ahead.  I think that the projections on to writers of being bored with certain characters, or even the old chestnut about writers being financially compensated for not writing for a prior writer's characters, are overblown.  Occum's Razor suggests that a writer like Pam Long didn't write for Rita because her story function was already fulfilled by others on canvas. If Long wanted a liberated woman who could go up against Alan she had Reva, so she didn't another character who played the same function.  If Long wanted an alternate mother figure for Phillip she had Alex so she didn't need Jackie.  Similarly, when Bill was killed off, Lesie's father Dr. Jackson was still around to play a mentor toward Ed.

I understand that a well designed character could have returned, or stayed, for any period of time.  However, I don't think that writers have a duty to maintain or retrieve characters if their function is currently being replicated by another character that they created.

I think a character like Rita differs from Reva due to the fact that roger and holly were back...and there was unfinished angst with alan/ed and there never was an answer as to what happened to Rita when she vanished in 1981.  Sometimes a character cant just be replaced in a story (meaning Reva wouldn't have fit as going against Alan in that time period since she had no ties with ed/roger/holly.

    • It seems obvious based on the initial material that Korte was going to take another foolish run at Jason and Carly a la 2021 and hoped Mulcahey being back would make it work, as he wrote such famous material for Steve, Sarah, etc. I think a couple good dialogue scenes came out of them together very early on, but there was never any denying that Steve and Laura have never had and will never have any romantic chemistry, plus the audience doesn't want it. So they pivoted to her with that useless dayplayer (Brennan) and now here they all are, spinning their wheels doing nothing of value on the show. I do think PM had planned to do much more with Jason's sons and that rivalry/friction, but once he was gone so was Jake. I've rarely seen any of the core mob 3 feel so totally extraneous and directionless on the canvas.
    • I just edited the 1998 SOD Awards & Laura Wright won Best New Character for Cassie on GL. Also Philip & Harley won something of some name for them as a couple & when they finished saying their effusive thanks at the mic, Grant picked Beth up & literally threw her over his shoulder & walked backstage that way. I mean, it's great that Beth Ehlers is a good sport, right?

    • nothing. The story was put on the backburner while they focused on other stuff. I think thats one of the issues i have with the show in that it sometimes struggles with balance as stories will disappear for weeks and then reappear (Chelsea's throuple for example)
    • I HATED Infinity (I could care less about Kyle Sampson and his hanger ons and the dumb Lujack video, and Mindy and Kurt were strong armed into being a fave couple and married off way too soon (Jeva didnt get that big of a wedding.) I did like the Fishing Mystery (despite the changing of history..it was murky enough that it could be fudged) and the Cabin mystery started out good ..I thought Tony was hot and I liked Annabelle, it had supernatural elements but they did not overtake the story (i.e. Reva traveling through time..) and I love a gothic mystery.. however, it was bizarre that nosy Nola wasnt in the mix...she barely seemed interested that her sister in law was psychic, there may be ghosts in her brothers house, etc.  I don't know if there was a behind the scenes issue with Brown and Kobe, or if Long just wanst interested or felt tied up writing for Quola.  I would have had Quint blow up in the cabin instead of Hillary but..The big problem that the end result was...boring. Okay so there are black Spauldings..and they disappeared...so what now? Not only was J gross...(I can't believe the actor IS actually just as obnoxious as J) they made Chelle into an airhead horn dog going after her cousin. Yes, by adoption but still her cousin. I wondered why she was not calling Nola "Aunt" when she first arrived, and they barely acknowledge each other ( I would think Nola would glomb on to mothering her sister's daughter, especially with Stacy not in town, much to Ed's chagrin) but it was in service to...this??? Wait until Chele gets all horny for an angel...oyyyy! No one else in town reacted to Nadine's death,, cause Deas had to have his big dumb over the top reaction scene to Deenie's death. I can't imaging watching that scnene and thinking he was a good actor!

I know, I'm getting the sense they expected Beaty to stay if they were going the rehabilitation route with Abby. A few weeks ago, when Michelle was dressing sexy for her date with J, she let Abby try on a dress and Rick then taught her what dating was like, and she went in and kissed him. They were clearly setting up the Abby/Rick story, but then suddenly it has pivoted to Rick falling back in love with Annie and trying to convince her not to go to Josh since he and Reva are secretly meeting at the cabin (Annie is getting unhinged here). But with Rick focused on Annie again, it would have left room for Abby to work with Brent, had Beaty stayed (at least this is what I'm assuming based on what I'm seeing). Rick is also now in Blake's orbit - they both just got in a bar fight post-Ross/Amanda kissing and Annie rejecting Rick's advances. They're together and Blake is now coming onto Rick while they drink... uh oh.
    • She is truly in such a delusional state that it's hard to know what's true but I'm sure there are some easter eggs in there. I am very curious to see how they utilize Leslie now that everybody knows who she is. If they do go with a connection to Anita in someway that would definitely be interesting. Anita was the first and only person so far that Leslie seemed intimidated by.
    • I do get your point about the Q's stuff with Lois back in the day.  I will say there were a lot more Quartermaines and a lot more stupid, corrupted plotting in the 90's.  I think the show went out of their way to make Lois seem almost naive, unprepared for such an insane family The whole idea that Lois had to move far away from Ned and PC to raise Brook Lynn was a bit flimsy for me as well.  I mean, no judgement, but BLQ still got knocked up as a teenager lol.  I appreciated Lois was also hard on Sonny back then.  Lois could clearly see his flaws even if she loved him. Yeah, Sonny, Carly and Jason don't really deserve human connections with anyone but themselves lol.  I always have wondered if the show did want to re-pair Jason/Sam and whatever happened with Kelly happened.
    • I might've somehow missed it but what happened to Jacob's partner Detective Marcel Malone? And Jacob's shiny bald headed daddy Chief Elon Hawthorne as well?
