GL messed with its theme and graphics entirely too much in its last decade. After HOLD ON TO LOVE, we got the 10 second version, the Lifesavers version, the Moving Frames version, the Overdone Logos versions (Reva and Harley), the There Is A Destiny version, and the Katie Mac version. HOTL was far from played out; just needed new graphics.

Since people were mentioning Hope Bauer, I will say I remember watching GL through the 2003 debacle. OLTL at the time seemed ready to dispense with Catherine Hickland as well as Roscoe Born, and I had always found Ron Raines singularly unimposing as Alan Spaulding. My idea, however misguided, was to bring Born and Hickland on as Alan and Hope Bauer. Alex would bring Hope back to town to throw Alan off his game, and the two star-crossed lovers would ultimately reunite. They'd had great chemistry as their demented characters on OLTL, and of course they were on The City together.

It was particularly pie in the sky because I wanted them to get Beverlee McKinsey back, which would never have happened. I believe she also said no to AW before it ended.

I had much weirder, darker ideas than that for Blake and Ross's twins, too, something I always thought was a good one, but it would have required their literally being retconned into being identical twins instead of fraternal, which is just too big a hurdle for me to jump, looking back as an adult - it's Pratt-esque, to introduce that out of nowhere.

Do you guys think that Roscoe could pull off being Alan?

I like RB but his performances always came off as pervy in a sense. Maybe because he was tight cast in those roles in soaps. The only time I've seen him not play a vile role was from clips when he was Robert Barr on SB.

And Vee, share your story for the Marler twins. I wanna hear it. happy.png

I don't think Roscoe would have been a good match because Alan was supposed to be upper-crusty and RB always excelled at more "from the streets" type characters. He may had been better as a recast Roger.

The biggest problem for me wasn't Raines, but the way the writers portrayed Alan as if they never went back and watched CB's version of the character.

I liked Pilon somewhat, but they did write him as an evil dullard that would go to lengths that the Bernau version would not go to stop Phillip and Blake's wedding. Almost as if to say "Hey look, Roger wasn't THAT bad after all"!

100 percent agree about Parlato. His version of Clay almost feels like a dry run of Alan. Mantooth I really can't see though (and yes, I know he played "Clay" (imposter) also).

As do I.

Long ago, I had in mind someone to play Alan, but it's way too embarrassing to share now if I haven't already. Besides, these days, I'm of the opinion that no one other than Chris Bernau could have done the part justice. Just as no one other than Beverlee McKinsey could have done Alexandra justic (contrary to what BM herself believed).

    • I know at one point they were on Hulu & i-Tunes. I just checked it on JustWatch.com & it indicates 1 season on Prime Video & on AppleTV. Have fun!
    • That era is so weird...they made a big deal out of all three of those characters and then they just..disappeared! Not that I am complaining. We talk about the bad out of character writing for Alex under JFP..but this was one example that may have led them to write her being so obsessive with Nick.  WHY would Alex accept Flock of Seagulls guy as her brother? They had her in one scene (setting up the Alan return) complain that Alan abandoned her...she blackmailed him into leaving town and she had been angry at him for helping Brandon with Lujack and also using Spaulding for that dumb dreaming death thing. Endless scenes of her with Simon, I can't believe Bev wasn't bored to death! I would also add Pam writing the scene where she lets Ms. Sally die in front of her to protect Alan and  the writing for Alex could be screwy even before JFP.
    • On this day 34 years ago the final episode of Dallas and came in at an astonishing #2 in the ratings after two straight seasons of weak ratings. Interesting Knots was #27 for that week as well:

    • Thank you for clearing that up. I wasn't watching GL regularly yet at that point, but seems to me I should have remembered the big wedding after Leslie's death (which I do remember) described in the profile. Is there a web archive of SOD summaries, or are referring to your own personal collection?
    • I was bummed that 2.0 ended because Mcpherson (headwriter) had really set up some interesting stories and we never got to find out where the stories would go once they resumed production on 'season 2'. I remembered the EP (Ginger Smith) and a lot of the stars gave a lot of credit to McPherson being able to come in on very short notice and come up with stories/plots (I think it was a very short turnaround time of a few weeks).  It was nice that she got to redeem herself after her year long Days stint was not well reviewed/liked.

    • It seems like a setup for failure to review a single episode of a soap, but Cleveland Amory was a foolish man.  His taste was so predictable, that one wondered why bother reviewing a medium he so clearly disliked. (found on Facebook retro TV group) Another case in point of his misogyny from his review of Dark Shadows (Can you imagine the magazine with the widest circulation in the country insulting its customer in this way today?)

    • They could easily be re-created, or even re-shot in different ways, especially if they were re-shooting scenes at some point, as well.
    • The Ted recast really is a shame because now they won't be able to do flashbacks to the best scenes the show has done to date.
    • That would be an AMAZING twist.
