Passions Discussion Thread

I didn't know that she broke her contract to get out of the show. It seems like most of the Passions cast became close and still are to this day (and always had a relatively small cast for an hour-long show). Maybe it was the youngest cast members, the ones who still needed guardians with them, that had it really bad. MEW, Taylor Anne Mountz and Lena Cardwell were all off the show after a year. Have any of them ever really elaborated on their experiences?

Actually, it is the host - who clearly knows nothing about soaps and is going on his uninformed assumptions about what soaps are like - who says that. She responds that it was not it.

She says what she didn't like was that it was very "militant" (whatever that means) and not particularly warm and welcoming, which tells me that she objects to the factory-like nature of soaps - where everything is done at breakneck speed without allowing for creativity or experimentation
Which, you know, fair enough.
She also looks down on the content of the show but it is the host who really annoyed me with his ignorance and over-the-top pearl-clutching.

Lena Cardwell was actually on the show for a good chunk of the early years, 1999-2001, Chrystee Pharris didn’t take over the role until the hell in the closet storyline.

@AbcNbc247 yes, Taylor Anne Mountz was dating Jesse Metcalfe. She left to continue college.

Both Lena and Taylor were at the Passions Reunion a couple years back and had nothing but good things to say. IMO if they didn’t like the experience I would think they’d probably skip the reunion like MEW.

Another interesting thing I noticed was in the comment section of the YouTube video with MEW’s interview, someone claiming to have worked on Passions defended the show and said the show was very fast paced and for a 14 year old like Mary who was just starting off on a soap, the experience was probably much different compared to anything she had done up to that point which is reasonable.

The fact the interview title calls the set “toxic” when she herself doesn’t rubs me the wrong way. “My mom had to stay in the dressing room, it wasn't a friendly atmosphere and the show was crappy” does not necessarily equal toxic, but perhaps that was her personal experience.

The cast often times cite the fact that they all started together and were the “little soap that could” and underdogs, they were extremely close, had parties together and pranked each other on set... sounds completely different from this toxic experience Mary Elizabeth Winstead had.

Jessica didn’t spice up until Danica Stewart got in the role and she was being pimped out by Spike and killing the John Does lol

I’m glad they gave her a happy ending with Reese haha

Yeah she clearly was not happy and we can't invalidate her experience - I mean not everything is for everyone - but it is clearly the host and show who are pushing a narrative around what she says.
Her actual telling of the story is not nearly as dramatic or negative as the framing of the video or the host's reactions would have you.

Not to be unkind but if a grocery store employs a 14yo as a clerk, they are not going to let your mom seat in a corner watching you work either. It is a show, not theater with an audience.
I understand why she might have wanted it but I don't think it warrants the host's cries of horror. If she felt she needed her mom there, sounds like she actually wasn't ready to have a proper acting job yet which in turn explains why it might have been a bad memory.
I think it was down to her as much as the show and them being a bad fit for each other.

    • Good Morning, this is still funny to me but I totally enjoyed what makes up "DemetriKane" so unnecessary, who cares?!!! Glad you like the Emma Peel derivative story.
    • Christian Streaty penned today's Day's script. https://www.linkedin.com/in/christian-streaty/
    • Yes, they did.  I still have them.  I think there were three.  AMC and GH as well.
    • Ah okay, thats what I thought. I was hoping I missed the announcement somewhere. Thanks for the clarification.
    • A new day in Salem… and a new day for Days.  I like the way everybody found out and absorbed the news about John’s death, and how they all eventually found their way to Marlena’s to offer their condolences. I’m not particularly sure why they waited until the next day to tell everybody but I don’t really mind it.  We finally got Roman’s perspective! His scenes with Kayla were one of the best parts of today. I’m glad that Roman is thankful for everything that John did for his kids. I agree with posters who said that he should’ve had a scene like this with John, but I’m happy we got this at least.  Julie was used very well today too. She’s definitely the best person for Marlena to have scenes with at the moment. Hopefully, Julie continues to be there for her. And yes, I totally agree with Marlena and Belle sending EJ away when he came to the apartment. I’m curious to see what’s going to happen to his and Belle’s relationship in the aftermath of all this. And, while I enjoyed most of Brady and Kristen’s scenes, I still think the ship has sailed for them. Hopefully, the aftermath of John’s death causes Brady to finally end this thing with her once and for all.  And, I see a lot of people were wearing some kind of shade of purple today.

    • Wow, I love that current and former actors are participating in this. I barely recognize Staci Greason! She looks fine, just very different. But I will be happy to hear anecdotes from her. I shipped RoJohn and Isabella hard back in the day, and I sobbed buckets in my dorm room at college when Izzy B passed. Honestly, I'm interested in everyone's stories. Drake seemed like he was well loved among the cast.
    • When she first appeared, I was sure she was setting Tyrell up for a prank. She was too much of a manic pixie dream girl- I wasn't surprised Tyrell also became suspicious. Now I'm not so sure. If Jessica genuinely likes Tyrell, it seems like a missed opportunity to not have started her out as a bully, then we see her gradually catch feelings for Tyrell.  The McBrides are definitely the "C" family of BTG. They always get last priority. There have been a few times where the Doug/Vanessa/Joey characters reference off screen conversations which seem too important to not show us. Like when Doug thanked Joey for giving him extra time to pay off the loan. When did that happen? Or when we abruptly moved from Vanessa/Joey at Uptown to Vanessa/Doug in the hotel room. The McBrides don't even have their own set - even though Vanessa is a realtor. It's a shame because I am a fan of the characters and actors.

I am also adjusting to KR as Ted but I feel that AM and MJ had way more chemistry as father and daughter than AM and KR. We saw Eva dream of having a real relationship with MJ's version of Ted for months so it's a bit of a bummer not to have that payoff with the original actor except for those scenes in MJ's last episode.  Something I noticed about Eva today is how she takes genuine delight in being a schemer. As badly as she wants to be a Richardson, she still has so much of her mom in her. It was jarring seeing her earnestly promise to steer clear of Leslie in her scene with Ted, then immediately switch attitudes when her mom showed up.  I'm very surprised with how quickly the accident story has been moving along. I was sure that it would be months if not years before people figured out it was Leslie on the motorcycle, not to mention responsible for the potassium overdose. I'm looking forward to seeing how MVJ and Guza avoid writing Leslie into a corner.  Finally, I have been loving the Articulettes story. Bonita Brisker was just the right amount of OTT - remember Sharon is supposed to be even more angry than Tracy is. If Sharon didn't come in swinging, people would say she fell flat. The way Sharon and Tracy describe the breakup is so Supremes-meet-Original Recipe Destiny's Child. I get the sense that MVJ is re-writing the Return to Love Tour as a roman a clef, and I love it. I'm looking forward to finding out what the secret they share is. If Dante Green is as shady as Berry Gordy was, it's something dark. If/when they go through with the reunion, I expect Dante to show up and claim to own the Articulettes trademark in a Lou Pearlman-esque twist.
