At the beginning I liked her a lot... And I definitely don't agree with my husband about her acting... But still something just puts me off when Felicia is on screen. It's like they are pushing her to be this grand dame too much. It doesn't come off natural, but very staged and superficial.

Wearing a head piece and a gown doesn't make you suddenly be that.

In most cases it makes people look foolish... when they are still wearing a huge hat while sitting in someone's ugly kitchen talking about stuff.

To me... the actress and character shine the most when she seems down to earth and talking through something troubling. When the fluff and glitz is less and the REAL is more. When they act like she is Joan Crawford that's when I start wondering what is going on. She isn't. And some of the wardrobe choices for her have been horrific. 

Of course all of these impressions are personal ones and I don't claim to know what the character will become in the future or what it was when she started. 

I'm only saying my natural response to her now.

Felicia becomes more layered/balanced in the early 90s (circa 1991/1992/1993).   She leans more into the more down to earth element that you like, while still being Felicia of the 80s.  The process starts in 1989.. but doesn't really become apparent until the early 90s.

 

Iris was the rare connector character with her having a role at the hospital (I think she's on the board), working at Cory Publishing, and having romantic flirtations/connections with a lot of the male characters between 1988 and 1994.  Which resulted in her having interactions with the other female contemporaries (Donna, Felicia, Rachel) even if the three didn't always interact with one another.

Writing her off in the fall of 1994 severed one of the main connections/bridges with the different orbits.  Irony that the show didn't see her value.

This is probably an unfair generalization, but I do say it with affection: I've always thought of Felicia (and by extension, Linda Dano) as "your mother's fabulous but slightly insufferable friend." Sort of a Godmommie Mame, you know?

I have a very different view of Dano. For one thing, she like me, loves her little dogs. Another thing, of course she is effusive, outgoing but she is also very vulnerable & she used to have her Frank, her mother & Vivian who officially was her publicist (I think) but she was so much more. Now, they are all gone. Well, except for her always having a pair of her little dogs.

But, if I were going to think in your terms, what I would think is "cool aunt". Because this lady is really one cool dame.

I would put Felicia in the 'small dose' auntie category because she means well, but comes on too strongly at times.  In small doses, she would be a blast to hang out with.. but in anything larger than a small... she would be exhausting.

I tend to prefer lower key people than people that are always 'on' all the time.  Those people can veer off into energy vampire status pretty quickly.

I apply totally different standards. For Felicia & anyone else in Bay City it's reel as opposed to out here in the universe where it's real.

It's a bit confusing because in the summer of 1988 we get a lot of Drew Marsten (whom I had forgotten was Nicole's ex) and mentions of a mysterious Countess and also Reginald working to undermine Cory. Drew disappears around the same time Evan arrives, and gradually we get the reveals that he is in cahoots with Iris, Janice's son, etc.

Good point. In addition to being a great character in her own right, she had chemistry with almost everyone on the show. A Jake/Paulina/Iris triangle would have been a lot of fun.

If 1994 AW aired in 2025, I doubt Iris would have even considered to be on the chomping block. All the shows now are noticeably less youth obsessed compared to the 90s.

Very sad news. Denise Alexander has died.  Lesley Webber is a big part of what got me hooked on General Hospital and I absolutely loved her as Mary McKinnon. RIP.

And, the first storyline I remember was DAYS Susan & David & Julie & poor baby Dickie. Denise as Susan was the STAR of that story.
