I'm trying to remember if Josie had some madam who came to Bay City or if that is another show entirely.

As for fan backlash to these pimp and prostitute stories, I don't know of any. The only thing I remember is that Roscoe Orman had to leave his role as a pimp on AMC because he was on Sesame Street at the same time.

I suppose the serial killer stories on DAYS had more ramifications, especially the one in 2003 - but then everyone was brought back, so maybe not. And Loving, which doesn't really count because the show was ending.

AW's mostly just had the long-term effect of killing interesting characters and leaving a stench of misogyny.

She was never seen onscreen. There were also a few minor characters that MJ crossed paths with either as part of the Sin Stalker storyline or as Chad's "girls" or both ... I think one was called Letty? Or Linda?

I just remembered -- Lily Mason!

She was working as a prostitute when Quinn located her in order to adopt Thomasina. According to the AW synopses for 1983 she was arrested in May and Quinn bailed her out. However it looks like by October she had left prostitution. In 1984 when she started dating Grant Todd she admitted her past to him. He initially said he was OK with it but then dumped her pretty quickly.

I wish we had more of 1983 available online.

On the other hand, a history of sex work was not always a barrier in Bay City.  Some of the most respected cops, journalists, and designers started off in the oldest profession.  Unlike Peyton Place, a gal (or guy) with a checkered past could wind up involved with some of the wealthiest families in town.

Lettie the hooker is in this Hallowe'en episode with a lot of heavy-handed dialogue about how much MJ "understands" about prostitution and foreshadowing Lettie's imminent murder.

At the end of the episode there is a location segment outside the Love Mansion. Also Reginald really loves Victoria.

More outside the Love Mansion on the day of the skeet shoot. Scott and Cheryl enjoy the autumn leaves.

Linda was a different prostitute who worked for Chad and was also murdered by the Sin Stalker after spending some time with Peter.

I was looking on IMDB and see that Lionel Johnston (the last Michael Randolph) has no credits since 1984. I wish someone had asked him over the years of any memories he had of the aborted gay storyline for Michael. I'm sorry nothing of that period is around to where we could see the setup.

I was watching regularly at that time, and I do not remember any identifiable set up for Michael's gay storyline.  I believe Marianne and Mike were preparing to go to college, but I don't remember if Mike ever moved into a dorm, or if a roommate was ever mentioned at all.  I'm confident a roommate was not named, even if mentioned.  In fact, I was completely unaware of Lemay's intent for the gay plot until I read Lemay's book in the early-1980s.  I'd speculate TPTB curtailed Lemay's plans very shortly after Lionel Johnston was cast, so nothing at all ever made it into the scripts.  There were lots of scenes on the campus of Bay State University during that era, and there was a Campus Coffee Shop set.  Plus three or four college students (new characters) appeared pretty regularly for a year or so.

Speaking of Lionel Johnston -- he seems to have completely disappeared.  It's interesting he has managed to keep any photos of himself post-1979 off of the internet.  That's an accomplishment since most people who are professionals of any sort have at least one or two photos online somewhere (Linked-In, Facebook, employer's website, etc).

Another person from AW who managed to avoid having photos from later-life online was Virginia Dwyer.  It was amazing to me that Dwyer had absolutely no new photos posted online for nearly 35-years (from around 1975 until her death), even though she lived in Manhattan that entire time and had fans looking for her.  Less than 20-years ago, one over zealous fan managed to find her home address and took a photo of the outside of her apartment building.  He posted both the address and the photo online.  But there were never any photos of Miss Dwyer herself.

Thanks. I appreciate your memories. I agree that nothing likely made it to the air.

What did you think of Michael (or Johnston)? Were you surprised more was never done with him?

I am sorry no one was ever able to interview Dwyer about AW in spite of her long life (similar to Jean McBride who outlived her work on Love of Life by many, many years), but I'm glad she was able to maintain her privacy to some degree.

    • As I said in May, I have no problem with Martin and Bradley being married. You can still do all the fun introloper storylines with them as you do everyone else. Both men of a certain age, and it is very believable for them to have either a first love or have been previously married. And, you can do it without either of them cheating!

I said something similar during the premiere week. Bill was the perfect age to play Martin as Vernon and Anita's child. I would've much preferred this version, but oh well.
    • I don't know how you want to count Maeve. She "retired" in '00, but would come back for appearances. I don't know however if she made an appearance in '01 or '03. In '02 I believe she came back for Josh and Reva's wedding. I assume she came back when Gina Tognoni took over the role of Dinah. And I know she was back for Ross' memorial service. Maureen Garrett was around until at least '00. I don't think Holly was in town when Ben returned though. I just got pissed off about Jerry all over again.
    • So, pretty sure Zaslow, Garrett, Kinkead, and Newman all chose to leave the first time. (If that's wrong, please correct me). Bernau - not sure why he left the first time. Was it voluntary? Or did they decide to write him out? They were writing so many out during that time period. It always seemed odd to me that they introduced Alex, FINALLY giving him someone he could talk to, and then he was written out. Or maybe that's why they made Alex his sister, so she could take his place as the head of the Spaulding family? Would love more intel on that if anyone knows. Simon - was he replaced by RVV? Or did he voluntarily leave the first time? It seems to me like one of those times TPTB decided to sex up or glamorize a character (and it clearly flopped). If he was fired, interesting he came back. Again, would love if someone could spill the tea. Clarke - I've always assumed he left because of his personal issues, but not sure if that was the case the first time.
    • So Doug just leaves Vanessa there with Joey? He's a f*cking loser. Vanessa needs to divorce his arse
    • Tina Sloan tied Jerry VerDorn record when Guiding Light was cancelled - 26 years uninterrupted
    • Very true...but TPTB all were desperate to get into prime time or films and couldn't, so they looked down on their own industry and tried to infuse themes that just didn't work in soaps. I would have thought after 9/11 the shows would have gone out of their way to provide that warmth and comfort that the audience wanted, and to bring old viewers back. Budget cuts? Just bring back kitchen sets, both ATWT and GL got rid of those besides one each..(the Snyders and the Bauers) You don't need super fancy sets if you have the writing.
    • LMAO they didn't

    • LY has a job on another show. She's going to be on the Legally Blonde prequel "Elle"
    • From what I can put together, the 1980s had several actors with interrupted runs. Michael Zaslow: 1971-1980, 1989-1997 Maureen Garrett: 1976-1980, 1988-?, ?-end Christopher Bernau: 1977-1984, 1986-1988 Peter Simon: 1981-1984, 1986-1996, ?-end Maeve Kinkead: 1981-1987, 1989-1996, 1997-end Robert Newman: 1981-1984, 1986-1991, 1993-end Jordan Clarke: 1983-1987, 1989-1993, 1996, 1997-end By 1989, I believe the longest-tenured cast member without a departure was Jerry verDorn.
    • I know they were popular, but once they tamed Van's shrew, I thought Billy just brought Van down. Since they had just Nola and Billy sitting around in 97, an interesting thing would be if they had developed a friendship that turned into something else while Van was "dead". Maybe Billy lives at the Boardinghouse (to work on repaing his relationship with Bill) and works at Company instead of the stupid diner. Nola and Bridget give him a job there and Nola and Billy (who had originally been a bit antagonistic) slowly build up a relationship and then Van returns. A returned new lease on life Van would return to her "high hat ways" and take on the Spaulding's for control of the company with Billy helping her behind the scenes.  I know that Jordan was on sporadically because of his issues and them not know if they could trust him not to fall of the wagon, but they could have done it slow..and give Van and Nola a new reason to get in each others hair (I love a good Van/Nola tussle.)
