In honor of AW's 45th anniversary,I thought I'd start this thread and perhaps all future posts concerning this show could be in one place.at present there are several threads.

Here's a description from Irna Phillips at the time of debut.

"What I want to say is that none of us can face reality 24 hours a day. We must have private 'worlds', made up of our down dreams and pleasures and emotions, into which to retreat. Otherwise, it would be simply too much!"

The story follows the lives of the families of two brothers, William and James Matthews, in a suburban university town. It opens with the death of William, then shows how the sad events affects the widow and their children and the other brother and his family. Grandma Matthews gets into the action, to. The writer promises to relate to contemporary problems; two of them she mentioned are school dropouts and illegitimacy.

There was talk in the 90s maybe 94/95 that AW wanted Kin Shriner as Sandy Cory. I wish that had happened. I wonder why it never did.

Yes the Sandy in 1993 was very cold

Once Jamie left Bay City in 1993, never to return again- Sandy, Blaine, and Alex Cory should have made their way back to Bay City.  Blaine and Alex Cory were never seen on the show after 1985, and a replacement Sandy made a few appearances with Maggie.

I think Kin and Nancy Frangione playing off of each other could have been fun. Would have strengthened an already talented cast. Doubt his arrival would have done much for the ratings at that point tho.

When they first announced that Cecile would return in 1995, recasting was an option but they decided to ask Nancy back

About 6 weeks- they canceled the show in mid April and had to be done filming by the end of May.

So outside of Carl & Gary thats probably why no other fan faves returned

maybe… i heard from a former soap journalist (and a huge aw fan) that goutman wanted to bring back beverlee mckenzie for the finale, but pgp said no.

figuring that pgp was still smarting from beverlee’s abrupt gl departure a few years earlier. always wondered if incident this played any role in goutman’s behavior when atwt sent off the air.

I wonder if Beverlee would have been interested in a return, even for just that final episode. I guess we'll never know.

Was it a money issue Or was p&G still pissed that she left GL in 1992?

Wasn't Chris Rich asked to return (I don't know for how long) and he turned them down?

Chris Rich was asked back for the 25th anniversary episodes in 1989 but declined.  Not sure if he was asked back again for the Maggie story.

The talk at the time was that P&G refused to let her return for the final episode as they were still pissed that she got one over on them at GL.

When did Nancy & Chris Divorce. Maybe he didnt wanna return in 93 cause she was there for those few shows

There were rumors that Nancy and Chris only renewed their deals once AW replaced Laura Malone as Blaine

According to the AWHP, Cecile was there in May 1993 and Sandy in June & July, so there was no overlap. According to Wikipedia Nancy Frangione and Chris Rich divorced in 1996. Hard to say when they might have separated.

Cecile was also onscreen between October 1995 and June 1996.

I may be wrong but I doubt it.
First she was never a sentimental kind of person and mentioned several times that her roles were just that. I don't think she felt the kind of emotional connection with the show that made someone like Julianne Moore want to go back.
Also considering how much she said she regretted doing her Myrna stint on GH, that she did just for the money, I don't think even good money (and doubtful good money would have been available even if PG had said yes) would have convinced her.
Would have been fun though although considering the level of judgement at NBC daytime at that time, we would have would have had a scene of her with the gorilla.

Nancy just appeared in that one-off fantasy episode in 1993.

Was Cecile only a fantasy or was there some reality? The AWHP gives her dates as May 19, 20, and 25. Murder on the Honeymoon Express was May 20. The synopsis for the week of May 24 sounds like Cass might have run into Real Cecile as well.

It's interesting that they had Cecile onscreen at the time since Maggie had just showed up as "Joy" right before this. I wonder if they had hoped to keep Nancy around for longer.

I think it could definitely have been interesting to see Sandy interacting with Iris and Amanda and Matthew. With Jamie and Larry and Catlin gone it is harder to imagine what they would have done with Blaine to keep her interesting. My mind is so cluttered up with Jamie and Dennis dating the younger generation of Lisa/Vicky/Marley/Olivia that it seems to make Blaine's presence awkward.
