Hits and Misses 2000

To be fair I'm nto sure we can even blame McTavish for the Brooke stuff--she always seemed happy to write for her before (not often very well but...) and I blame Frons and crew. Seriously I still miss her and her character so much and I even had a dream a few weeks ago where I was so happy when she came back to the show lol.

Agnes Nixon did write a story for her when she came back in 99--suddenly we saw the community center/shelter she worked at a lot and then Eliot that priest who turned out to be the drunk driver who killed Laura I. We discussed this story in some depth a while back but I actually kinda liked it for all its old school soap melodrama but I know I was in the minority--it was a very Agnes Nixon story though (for good and bad). I still wish I knew more how that era was organized though because Agnes Nixon set up some really good stuff--we got a lot of the vets interacting in funny scenes, a community feel, and then he rmain focus was Bianca but by the time Jean passanante was her co head writer the blanace was REALLY bizarre and then when Agnes left (her commitment was short btu she left on her own) it became perhaps the worse it's ever been IMHO (which says a lot). I just wonder if Agnes had no say when Jean was co writer in her stories/ or was finding writing Bianca etc enough work she just didn't worry (I knwo at the itme she said her return would be brief because she couldnt' commit to full time writing again).

Culliton started good--his stories just became unwieldy, his neverending "umbrella" Proteus plot still eaves me soo confused and he became known (perhaps not his fault) for a TON of dropped characters and storylines with no resolution (even stuff like Timmy Dhillon coming back mysteriously then disappearing). Is Amanda in aANY contact with Tim anymore? (random thought)

But yeah Dogboy and all those e popping teens (Marcus who i think ende dup in a coma etc) were just... too awful

GUIDING LIGHT

Soap opera characters usually get taken in new directions.but P&G toolk GL in different directions in 2000!Headwriters Barbara Esensten and James Harmon Brown got the boot.Enter Claire Labine, whose storytelling sensibility seemed a natural to recapture Springfield's heart and soul.

In a bizarre backstage twist,GL announced Labine's departure, but she stayed after all.The result:a show in constant transition.

The two headwiting regimes offered a very different product.Under B&E's pen,Danny had morals,Carmen had a life,Selena had a brain.Under the Labines.Danny had a one night stand with a apid cigarette girl and then killed his mother, and the mob drove a now spineless Selena out of town.

To the Labine's credit, the characters got personalities. For example,Jim turned out to have a gambling problem, and Rick made us laugh

again.Suddenly, there is once again a spring in Springfield's step.

I actually liked Culliton in part because as you point out, he seemed to like writing for Brooke. However, I think that AMC had a far better cast back then so even if the some of the stories were clunkers (proteus, ultimately) we still got to see Opal, Palmer, Vanessa, Erica, Bianca, Leo& Greenlee, Anna and David. Things might have gotten a little odd under him but I never recall AMC being as dreadfully boring or unwatchable as it has been after his tenure.

    • I have not gone back to watch much of 1987, but from what I've seen lately, it doesn't feel like the writers or producers had any sort of plan. The show feels as if it's constantly in flux.  I will give it credit for this. It's watchable for the most part minus Lisa/Jamie which I find nearly unwatchable now.   I don't find Cheryl mousy. I think she has a lot of quiet strength, but she was saddled with the Scott romance which the writers did not invest in. She had a good friendship with Julie (also criminally underused), and her interactions with Ada were enjoyable as well. I also like Layman, but Spencer was extremely talented and when Cass returns, Schnetzer and Spencer have some wonderful scenes. Spencer also fits in with Alexander, Hogan, and Marie.  I'd forgotten just how much I missed seeing Wallingford. IT was so good to see him again. Even when they didn't have a major plot, Felicia/Cass/Wallingford/Mitch always brings a smile to my face.
    •   Dani’s cute ass party planner. He gave me some tea but I was so drunk I don’t remember it.
    • NBC must have been grateful to have LHOTP, it's only hit and still strong after several seasons. Their next established show was Rockford Files at 45th. They didn't develop any comedies and relied on movies and mini series  which didnt establish viewer loyalty and habits. Their only new hit was mid season's Project UFO which debuted Feb up against Rhoda/On Our Own on CBS and How the West Was Won on ABC. It opened with a strong 36 share beating CBS and close to ABC as HTWWW had a 36 share over 3 hours. The next week UFO saw a respectable 32 share, then a 31 so it was slipping. A 28 share followed but a few weeks later it jumped back up to a 34. So no blockbuster but compared to what else they had, there was potential, So next season NBC sent it to Thursday up against Mork and The Waltons and it bombed.  They were smart to see potential in Chips, which took off on Saturdaysnext season. ABC was on a roll with Love Boat, 3's Company, Taxi, Eight is Enough adding to their hits. Their only real flops were Redd Foxx and San Pedro Beach Bums, an Aaron Spelling misfire. Like Redd Foxx, Harvey Korman was lured to ABC but his series was a filler that did well but was considered a time slot hit. Nancy Walker and Rob Reiner were also given series on the philosophy that not only were they popular names, their absence from popular shows like Sanford, Rhoda and All in the Family might weaken those shows. CBS were relying on old favorites. Betty White was strong the first few weeks then faded. Incredible Hulk was their strongest newbie. It was lucky for CBS that NBC was doing so badly or else some of their weaker shows would have really suffered.
    • That outfit looks like something Martin would wear lol.
    • Omg not we both ran into people from the show this weekend!
    • I guess he was let out the gates, because he's outside.
    • Yup.  You can hate John all you want, but like seriously he was the cornerstone of the show for years.  So he should get a long ass funeral and burial and all the things because Drake and John deserve that.
