*anxiously awaits GL's ratings, but is a little nervous this week*

There was only one Otalia day last week, but I'm hoping that Coop's death/the fallout kept viewers tuned in. This week has been off the charts so I think I'm looking forward to next week's more!

Soaps should definitely go up after two down weeks and they head closer to March sweeps. President's Day was on Monday during that week so they should definitely see an uptick.

GL will be the most interesting and I hope it reaches 1.8 on at least two of those days during that week.

I've got some interesting local ratings for soaps. The ratings are for Tuesday February 24, 2009 in the TOP 5 markets in the country (NY, LA, CHI, PHI, DAL) along with Indianapolis, Denver, Detroit, Atlanta, Charlotte, Cleveland and Ft. Myers, Florida. So you'll be able to see how soaps do on the East Coast, Midwest, West Coast, and in the South. Trust me once you see them there's a huge difference in how soaps are watched in each region of the country.

One thing you'll notice is how ABC Soaps are watched more on the east coast more than CBS Soaps. CBS Soaps are heavily watched in the south. You'll also notice how after 9am or 10am, the hut levels start going down after most of the people head for work. That means soaps are doing the best they can in low hut level timeslots.

Soaps are doing up to par with what other shows are doing in daytime and even a little better.

Wow. I live in Denver now. I figured I must be one of the few who watches soaps. Used to live in Chicago and other places. ABC really rolls it up in certain big markets. In Chicago, Oprah feeds the ABC line-up. I'm curious if you have St. Louis or another city where Y&R airs at 4p.m.

TMOTVSoaps this is a great breakdown of these local market ratings. I had always wanted to see these kind of ratings so that I knew truly how the soaps were doing in certain markets especially the exact times and programming shown.

Oprah has really lifted ABC's lineup in Chicago but the big cities out east really like the ABC Soaps over CBS Soaps. Still can't believe how strong All My Children is in most markets.

Ohio is really strong with soaps and so is Indy.

North Carolina ratings are mind blowing. There are a lot of people at home during the day in that state.

Guess people in Denver only watch NBC's DAYS.

Guiding Light is doing well in some areas and I still see a majority based on these affiliates airing it after 2pm.

I know it won't make any difference, but I'll repeat it. The fact that the ratings are so different regionally shows why week to week fluctuations have nothing to do with the characters featured or the stories. There are so many other factors at work, like is there an Oprah repeat on, what is going on regionally like bad weather or some major social event or disaster. These are the things that effect the ratings. This is why advertisers focus on the demos. They are far less likely to fluctuate on a weekly or even monthly basis.

ETA: Obviously advertisers focus on the 18-49 women demo because they buy the most stuff.

The fluctuations that occur daily and weekly are random. People who are unemployed or are at home that day and happen to be a Nielsen family. These people are of all genders, ages and ethnicities. In contrast, the prize 18 to 49 women demo stays consistent or slowly decreases because even if the weather is bad or good, these women who stay at home and watch soaps habitually while they watch their kids or work from home. Now you may notice that the other demos of men and young women fluctuates wildly, but that is due to those random events and the weather.

A little off topic here, but I live in one of those markets that has a CBS affilate that airs Y&R at 4:00 pm et/3:00 pm ct. It is WLKY-32 in Louisville....which serves north central Kentucky and south central Indiana. (basically, nearly the entire area along Interstate 65 between Indianapolis and Bowling Green, KY).

As a Native New Yorker residing on the island of Manhattan, I have to say it seems we just don't like Days Of Our Lives. I can completely understand why GL would have such terrible ratings--we are not used to earthquakes and so the camera work does not look normal to us. I wonder what makes AMC the most appealing. Anyone have any theories on why one soap is more popular in one region and less in another?

    • Really an excellent point. I'm worried about Derek but he's not working. The Duprees being too good somehow ... well, if they say it instead of be it, okay yes, I would worry but as long as they keep on being good, geeze, that's something to celebrate, not worry!!!  Party on?!

    • I agree. For now. I am sure in a year's time...a new family (or old) will start to appear on the show.
    • There's some irony in Philip being forgiven, because it forces everyone to admit that Victor was wrong to change his will.  Everyone, eventually including Xander, (I presume), seems to think it was wrong for Victor to divide his estate in Xander's favor.  I appreciated Stephanie forgiving Philip, because she's got no skin in that game.  But, Belle's line about Philip missing Xander because he misses Bo did not ring true.  I think Philip would be sad if Bo dies, but I think he's more concerned currently about Xander. I am enjoying this EJ mystery so much that I am hereby taking a vow not to read spoilers.  I am also vowing — for the last time — to stop harping on this, but: the concept of a “sepsis treatment” remains absurd. Hospitals prevent sepsis through vigilant infection control; once sepsis sets in, it causes multiple organ failures. Treatment involves supporting each failing organ individually. The notion that a single medication could magically reverse organ failure is medically laughable. However, I like the contrast of Kim going through cancer, which is incurable in their universe.  Kayla's comment on the health of both of her siblings was both heartbreaking and an interesting twist.  MBE is also totally underrated.  She is carrying the weight of so many stories.   And, I like the use of Kayla as an audience surrogate.  She's arguably the most "real" person in Salem. Kayla isn't psychic, she wasn't SORASed, she's not a billionaire, and she doesn't have a bionic eye.  So, I enjoy that we get her perspective of the nuttiness that surrounds her. However, I don't get what gives her the authority to turn down EJ's offer.  I understand that they need a hospital figurehead to show us scenes of the competition to buy the hospital.  But, unless the entire administration has been let go, the Chief of Staff wouldn't make those choices.
    • But why worry about something that might not happen? Right now, most things revolve around the Duprees. We have no idea if or how long that will continue. For now, it's working.
    • The Duprees not having any staff is a bugbear for me. They've included the background staff at the Country Club but no one at the Dupree home. Even just an extra bringing in a tray of food/drinks or responding to a request from Anita would suffice.
    • Shut up, Dante and Lois.  I actually don't mind this particular soap trope, but in the context of this storyline, it just feels forced and unnecessary. If anything, this Dante/Gio tension needed to begin months ago. Plus, this storyline, in general, isn't doing Lois any favors either.  Emma comforting Gio was really sweet though. It's definitely time for the two of them to have their first kiss. And, Joss playing Secret Agent Barbie will just never work.
    • Note to makeup - Smitty’s eyebrows, bad clamshell look.
