The Country Club scenes with Alex and Roger was during the Nancy Curlee era.

Both Curlee and The Dobsons have been away from daytime for far too long. :(

I'm glad Roger never lapsed into cartoon Stefano territory. I wonder if that was the writing or Zaslow's performance alone.

Such a toughie cause all the best villains really evolve/change over time. But the best in my book for pure villainy and excecution would have to be Sheila Carter. She has all the elements of the perfect villain (crazy, cunning and out for revenge). Honorable mention goes to Annie Dutton (CW's not SC's).

Love Roger Thorpe too! :)

The fact that Ellen Wheeler still thinks she is this generation's Gloria Monty makes me weep.

The fact that I actually cheered when Kreizman and Wheeler were hired makes me weep! When they brought back Holly, Roger's son, Gina Tognoni's Dinah, Jonathan, etc., I actually declared on this very board that GL was back from the wilderness years. That it was utilizing its past to propel stories forward, that it was on the road to recovery. Excluding the Jonathan & Tammy teenybop effect, none of this came to fruition.

Any chance P&G would go, cap in hand, to beg Nancy Curlee to come back as HW? Or is GL so far gone in the bargain bin of soap operas that they wouldn't be able to afford her wages?

^^^ I WISH they would beg Nancy Curlee back. But it's not going to happen. I think it's because of money (GL doesn't have any) and too much network interference for Nancy's liking. I would find it very hard to believe that after her successful run on GL that another show, at one time or another over the last 14 years or so, hasn't tried to get her back to HW a soap. I'm sure she's had tons of offers to come back but evidently, she's just not interested. What a shame....

If you want to see a completely different side of Roger, you MUST check out the 1993 scenes at the Cliff House resort. This is where Roger and Holly have sex for the first time after the rape (about 15-20 years soap time). It is truly a wonderful series. Just look up "Persistence" along with GL and you should come to the series by ClassicGL.

Gwen Hotchkiss, Passions

- A rich, smug bitch with a superiority complex. This spoiled princess couldn't stand losing Ethan to "the housekeeper's daughter", so instead she ruined Ethan's life by outing his true paternity to the tabloids, effectively cutting him off from the Crane fortune. On top of that, she framed Theresa for the crime and drove a wedge between them. Later, Gwen became pregnant and used the baby to hold onto Ethan, who was prepared to reunite with Theresa. Later, she stabbed Theresa and kidnapped Theresa and Ethan's newborn daughter. Over the years, Gwen has constantly lied and manipulated to hold on to Ethan, all the while mentally and physically torturing Theresa. Fortunately, her goose is about to be cooked.

Beth Wallace, Passions

- Beth first appeared as Luis' mousy ex-girlfriend who ran the Book Cafe. She wasn't a very complex character, but she was familiar. It was no surprise then, that Luis turned to her when Sheridan died. After becoming engaged to Luis and then dumped by him on the very same night, Beth, who had endured emotional torment at the hands of her mother, snapped. Beth successfully faked a pregnancy and passed Sheridan's baby off as her own for almost two years. Luis' stubborn refusal to believe Sheridan when she claimed Beth's baby was hers drove a wedge between Sheridan and Luis, from which they never recovered. In addition to successfully breaking up Sheridan and Luis, Beth was just a truly wild, entertaining psychopath with a flair for camp and violence. Basically, everything I love in a good villainess.

Just to concur... GL's Roger Thorpe. Oh, how I miss Michael Zaslow! Not much can be added about him that hasn't already been said... so I'll just chime in with my favorite scenes with Roger/Holly... Acapulco and the Daniel St. John story.

I also loved Brent Lawrence (GL) and Annie Dutton (GL). Sheila Carter (Y&R) during the original run back when she was Lauren's nemesis (not recently with Phyllis) was amazing.

I keep questioning in my mind where the Baroness Alexandra von Halkein Spaulding would fit into these threads - as a villianess or heroine? The Beverlee McKinsey version, of course.

It was a great role, but walked the line between the two, right? What would y'all think?

And Annie Dutton was a great villianess. If anyone was in the role besides CW, it wouldn't have been nearly as great IMO.

I would say so, Alex (the Beverlee McKinsey version, of course) was more of an anti-heroine to me. I think she was a decent person at heart, but she made some really bad decisions.

Watros owns that role, Rauch and B&E were out of their mind with that whole Signy Coleman recast and Terri DeMarco story...

These are pretty small fry compared to the Sheila Carters, Alexis Colbys and Roger Thorpes of soapland, but I always did have a fondness for Lawrence Alamain on Days and Lorenzo Alcazar on GH. :)
