Annie Richards, SuBe. Didn't stop at anything to get what she wanted. Scheming, lying, backstabbing... anything to get what she wanted.

Virginia Harrison, SuBe. Don't mess with this one, because she'll impregnate you with a turkey baster! Eventually ending up in a mental hospital, it would have been great to see if one day Virginia had returned to mess with Vanessa again. Too bad the show didn't make it.

Sheila Carter, Y&R. There's really no need to explain this one.

And no, these might not be the GREATEST villains/villainesses, but they did a great job.

The greatest villain in soap opera history to me will always be GL's Roger Thorpe. He wasn't just a "villain" but one hell of a complex character. He could commit the most devious acts, yet you knew he still loved Holly (even if their relationship was toxic), Blake, and Hart. For my money, Michael Zaslow is the greatest actor to ever grace the daytime medium. He brought so much anger, rage, sympathy, and vulnerability into a role that most other actors couldn't have handled.

Also, he was never a cartoon character like other villians on other soaps.

Alvin, I agree with you about Roger.

The cartoon thing is what has ruined so many villians in the most recent years. I was happy to see that for the most part in the contest we held at SoapsWEB that the good old villians/villianesses were the most loved by fans.

Darn it! I never saw Roger Thorpe or Michael Zaslow in action. Time to go YouTube...

In my limited experience, Keith and Gina on Santa Barbara were an amazing villainous double-act.

Annie and Virginia on SuBe -- I will always have a soft spot for them.

And I also remember Rick Hearst and Sabryn Genet standing out on Y&R as Matt Clarke and Tricia. SG especially gave me goosebumps watching her mental deterioration. Rick Hearst still has potential to be a great "Roger Thorpe" type character on GH, come to think of it (if GH actually cared about arguably the best actor on their books).

^^^ Rick Hearst is amazing. He was the best Alan-Michael that GL has ever had, IMO.

The thing with MZ as Roger, he could utterly terrify you - as in raping his wife, Holly or chasing a very preggers Rita through the hall of mirrors - and then make you feel such sympathy for the character by giving him a compassionate, human side when he was with family - Chrissy (or Blake) in particular. He was absolutely brilliant.

Cat, when you YouTube, look for the scenes of him raping Holly. They are really good! And at the time, the SL was controversial because they were married. In the 70s (I'm assuming because I was pretty young), perhaps the social mores held that a husband couldn't rape his wife? I have no idea, but regardless, they are powerful scenes IMO.

It was written by The Dobsons during their HW tenure at GL. I've always though The Dobsons knew how to handle hard hitting social issues mixed in with lighter romantic and campy stuff better than any other HW(s). Ron Carlivati could learn a thing or two from them in that department.

They were truly innovative writers, it's a shame they've been chased away by the industry.

It's a crying shame. Their Santa Barbara underpinned my grade school years and introduced me to Daytime as a medium. I wish a show -- any show -- would lure them from retirement, but I understand Bridget Dobson has a whole new career in Atlanta as an artist now.

Greg's GL, I have seen two scenes featuring MZ -- Holly's rape, and Alexandra tearing Roger a new one in front of half the town. I was shocked at how forceful the rape was, even though we didn't "see anything." Roger pushing her down on the bed... cut to Holly shakily pulling herself off the bed afterwards. And Roger looking at her and realizing that the one thing he truly loved, he has now shattered irrepairably. Forever.

Alexandra exposing Roger was just great, goosebumpy soap. Interesting to see Holly's reaction to it and how torn she was about Roger's downfall. The glimpses of the relationship between Beverlee McKinsee's Alexandra and Holly hinted at something very interesting and powerful between those two ladies. Alex was almost maternal towards Holly, which I was not expecting.
