I'm glad you said "today". You know better than most of us that today is not necessarily predictive of tomorrow. But hope springs eternal! (at least in me). Six months of consistency would need to occur for me, I think, to relax a little.

And remember that (quasi-)bitchy lines don't make a show. They might make you laugh, but that's all. It doesn't mean the whole of a soap is superb.

Remember, Cane wants a baby. He was against abortion, and really wanted to raise Lily's baby. He explained it was because of his own parentless childhood. Plus, visibly, he is of an age where a man's mind may tend to family.

So, putting that together, remember what Chloe said last week: "I'll give Cane the baby Lily can't". I think she understands his paternal needs. Since Lily and Cane AREN'T a great fit...the lure of the baby may forge a bond between Chloe and Cane...such that he cares LESS if the baby turns out not to be his. Like with Phyllis and Danny. He TRIED to love Phyl for years...because of the child. That is where I see this going.

Also, this is a SOAP and Chloe is a WHACK-JOB (think Phyllis, Days' Sami, etc. etc.). Paternity switches are a piece of cake on soaps.

Interesting point for sure. I can't see him even remotely wanting to raise a baby with Chloe without a paternity test. Phyllis actually had verified sex with Danny. Not sure about Sammi. I buy your point that if Cane had a baby with Chloe he would most certainly have it. And maybe you're right - perhaps a paternity switch and could work cause Chloe is interesting enough. But i just think it would be so unoriginal and "been there, done that". You know? I expect more from Y&R. I mean I'm still getting over Spermgate! LOL!

No, I don't think Phyllis and Danny had sex pre-marriage. She got him drunk, and told him they'd had sex. But really, she used another man's seed. I guess she got pregnant the real way.

Then, years later, when Danny wanted a paternity test, she called over the old beau, drugged him, and TOOK HIS BLOOD WHILE HE WAS SLEEPING. Then, she swapped it for Danny's (or at least she tried) so that Danny would turn up as the father. If my recollection is right, it was YEARS before Danny asked for this test.

ETA: A pretty reliable site backs me up:

Chris and Paul were able to plant enough doubt in Danny's mind that he got a blood test done on Daniel. Danny was devastated to discover that their son was really the child of a man in Phyllis' past named Brian Hamilton, and that she had set him up all along. A vicious divorce and custody battle ensued, with Christine as Danny's lawyer, and the recently paroled Michael Baldwin assisting Phyllis' legal council. Phyllis and Michael began a wild affair. With the help of Brian Hamilton, all of Phyllis's lies and manipulations were brought out in court - including the fact that Danny had been drugged that first time and never even made love with Phyllis as she claimed. The court found her to be unstable and an unfit mother. Danny won custody of Daniel, whom he still considered his son. Although Phyllis was allowed visitation, it wasn't long before Danny left with the toddler for a European tour as a rock star. Danny coerced Phyllis into agreeing that it was not in Daniel's best interest for Phyllis to stay in contact with them.

Spermgate? Why? Did Victor have a vasectomy or something? Or even more than one? Can't be...his wife is pregnant and he didn't even blink...neither did anyone else in town.

You must be imagining the several years of Spermgate, or the Victor's dungeon story (created because Julia was pregnant, and Victor didn't think it could be his, because he'd been snipped). Nah, the dungeon never happened either. Young Paul never "held watch" over Michael Scott, who was in the dungeon because Victor felt he was infertile due to his first vasectomy. Nahhhhhh.

Thanks for the correction! That said, it just makes my point even clearer - why do the same s/l over again with different characters? I remember that s/l (maybe not ALL the details, hehe!) but it was pretty good and drove story for years. AND Cricket and Danny were a great couple at the time. Lane hasn't become the supercouple that the show designed them to be.

Now MY idea would be this: Let Chloe play the "it's your baby, Cane" card for a few months and then let the "booty-call" be revealed to be someone we already know on the canvas - Brad? or someone shocking like Kevin? Meanwhile, Lily shows her true Dru colors and hashes it out with Chloe and she falls and loses the baby and blames Lily. Cane is devasted and blames Lily. All the while Chloe goes to deperate measures to keep her mystery man secret. Devon though, catches on to it and busts Chloe and bam - you got a story! Not the most original thing ever, but something different enough than your standard paternity test swtch which has been done to death!

Don't you just love soaps Mark?! :)

This post is just cute! I love your attitude. It is interesting how cynical even the most hopeful of us become. I actually didn't mean to rain on your parade. When I watch it tonight, I'm going to be o'erbrimming with enthusiasm, I am sure.

Even though the show is improving, there's conflict, and things are actually heading someplace. But, WHERE IS THE CAMP!?!?

I think Latham and then Maria tried to ground the show a little too much and make it a little too realistic in some respects. However, Y&R has always been one of those soaps that masterfully balanced hard-hitting real life stories, with campy villains, psychos, and bitches!

I'd like to see some of the latter soon, and I'm sure the Hogan/Rauch influence will be able to give it to us.

hee hee

It's cool, Mark.

I never said it was brilliant. Or genius. Or that Y&R was "saved". I just said I liked it. No carlivatizing. No hyperbole. No o'erbrimming enthusiasm. Just like.

:D

With Y&R, we'll have to be very careful when to jump with joy... the show is getting better (slowly) but at least it's something. I just don't want to start talking about how much I enjoy watching it until I'm sure the quality is back full-time.

And Jana Sue Thatcher doesn't count!

God, I know she has her fans. But she was INTOLERABLE today.

This is SO not what I had in mind when I said I wanted a love interest for Kevin.

Frankie Frame, she is not.

Hell, she's not even Madame Delphina.

Yes, that is how I feel. Gosh, this last few years has made me jaded.

Emily is pretty good but the character was ruined once she murdered Carmen.
