Members Chris B
I'm currently catching up on the episodes post-break and I continue to be impressed with how much I'm enjoying the show. I didn't trust with the cast changes I would but this season feels more confident and better paced. I feel like the first season had a lot of mini stories but this one feels more like an ongoing show and it's less plot based. They're really diving into the characters and relationships.
Members Liberty City
The 2024 season is definitely more familiar than the 2023 one, but I still need some changes to happen.
Members AMCOLTLLover
Please register in order to view this content How well received was Neighbours during the mid 90’s til 99? Does someone know? From what I saw in my collections and promos it seemed like they were aiming for the primetime 90210 and home and away kinda vibe and hype. I don’t remember much from that era but I’m fascinated by Billy and Anne. Was Anne well liked by the audience ?? She seems so interesting This is so corny and really too much 90’s but I can’t look away for some odd reason. I really want to watch Neighbours but don’t know which era. I’m so conflicted. I want to watch Kylie Minogues era from the 80’s, Dione/Dee and toadies 2002-2003 and flick.. but I also want to watch like 2015-2016 with Tyler, Piper, Jack, Paige and 2018-2019 with Kyle, Roxy and Chelly. I wanted to watch summer-Tash-Andrew too but o already saw them live back then so I will skip that for now. what would u guys suggest ? Members Liberty City
I suggest trying "Season 1000," which is a collection of classic episodes from 1985–2011.
Members Skylover
If we break it down into most successful eras, 1986-1988, 1992-1994, 1996-1999 and 2003-2005 are considered 'golden eras'. Since then, the most popular era has probably been 2014-2020ish. 1995 is considered a fairly weak year (though I watched this recently and thought it was very good), Harold and Madge were re-introduced in late 1996 at the BBC's insistence in order to revamp the show following a perceived weak period. With their return, and the introduction of the Wilkinsons (including Anne) which blended long-term with the Martins, that period is considered a very good one, especially with the likes of Karl's affair with Sarah, the 1997 season finale (which saw Karl/Sarah kiss, and Ruth's son Ben involved in a car crash). 2000 and 2001 are considered to be two of the weakest seasons of the show as people thought it was boring and bland, it picked up in 2002 when the producer changed, which led to the next good period from 2003 to 2005. 2004 in particular is considered to be a very strong period. I agree with Liberty City about looking at Season 1000 to see the iconic episodes. If you're interested in the late 90s, I would watch episodes 2995, 3000 and 3108 to 3111. Members AMCOLTLLover
@Liberty City Thank u so much. This I’ve checked it out Please register in order to view this content I remember 2004 very well. It had Skye in it. That’s where I started with Neighbours as a kid. Took a break and got back in like 07-08 @Skylover Thank u to you too. I’ve watched a few over the night so far from that collection and I’ve decided that I’m giving 1996 a shot. The opening is so corny like 20 something’s would actually invite a young boy to their pool party lol I really enjoyed what I’ve watched from the 80’s but it is so old fashioned for me right now. I remember my country aired like the first 3 years of that show and I’ve watched it here and there. I even got the DVDs and watched like the first 100 episodes and took a break coz of work and life. But I will go back to that. is anyone going to that 40th anniversary show? I really want to but the line up ain’t even that exciting tbh. I would just travel to meet Libby and Drew but the rest is meh Edited January 21 by AMCOLTLLover
Members Liberty City
Oh, very nice. The initial 100 "Season 1000" episodes were so nice, and then they added another collection mixed in, and it added more! Hoping you get to enjoy some more Neighbours, because everyone needs good ones.
Members Adamski
It's quite telling that 2023's Live In Conversation tour had 15 sold out shows across the UK and Ireland, while next month's 40th anniversary tour only has six shows. (Which all still have tickets available). With all due respect, that could be because the new show's cast isn't as A-list, but it still speaks volumes. Hopefully, Fremantle and Amazon see the 40th anniversary tour as the perfect time to announce a renewal. I've just had a big Neighbours catch up, and am finally up to date with the show. Some random thoughts... Anything involving Eirini Rising or JJ/Nell/Dex is fast forward material for me. Why oh why were we subjected to an extended return from Toadfish Rebecchi within weeks of his 'exit'? It saddens me to see the Rodwells dispersed. I've said it before, but Karl and Susan really need to sell up and just head off on their Great Australian Road Trip. Alan and Jackie helped relaunch the show, but if they can't/won't commit to the show full time, why not free up two salaries? They could pop back in a couple of times a year for weddings/funerals/crises, like Harold did for years. Especially if Malcolm Kennedy returned full time, with a family of his own. Splitting up Shane and Izzy offscreen, and only hearing Shane's side of events, upsets me. Hoping there's more to come with that, and we'll get Nat Bass back for a guest stint at some point. (Having Izzy return as a wealthy divorcee/widow is to good an opportunity to miss, IMO). Don't need another round of Paul and Terese, but there's no denying that Stefan and Dame Rebekah spark off each other so well onscreen. I don't buy Max Ramsay as a mechanic, but I love seeing him wind up Byron and be all 'butter wouldn't melt' with Vera. (Who livens up every scene she's in). We are so lucky to have Annie Jones on this show. She always gives such lovely performances and I feel that Jane is the most well rounded character on Neighbours thanks to her. (And the writers clearly love writing for Jane). If anyone's going to be "the next Margot Robbie," it's Majella Davis, IMO. She is the full package, and just oozes charisma. I love that she can do drama but can also be light and playful. Hope she stays for a while. I'm not bored by Seb at all, as the actor is just so damn gorgeous. David's death has been the making of Aaron, and Matt Wilson has charm to burn. I love seeing Aaron's growing friendship with Cara and Remi, too. I was a big fan of Nicolette #1, but now I struggle to remember what she looks like, as Hannah Monson has made that role her own. And while I can definitely remember what Byron #1 looks like, Xavier Molyneux is also really fun as Byron. Had not seen Chrishell Stause in anything before Neighbours, but I thought she was fabulous as Yaz! She was present, can act and looks fantastic. I didn't even feel that the story dragged, as she was so enjoyable to watch. Edited January 22 by Adamski
Members Skylover
I think it's down to a number of factors. The tour in 2023 initially went on sale in 2019 and was due to take place in 2020 as the 35th Anniversary tour, and this was when the show was still on Channel 5 and hadn't been axed. I do think though that the new tour should have had some stalwarts on the show in the new cast even though they'd done it before. I get the reasoning to want different actors so you're not repeating, but those long-term cast would undeniably be a draw, I don't think anyone is interested in meeting the actor who plays Leo. Alan and Jackie don't need to be there all the time. They still appeared in 110 and 82 episodes of 2024 respectively, which is a lot. I don't think long-term cast need to be involved in big storylines all the time, sometimes they work well as supporting characters. I'd rather have them there less than not there at all. They're treated much better than the Home and Away veteran actors. Edited January 22 by Skylover
Members Liberty City
I agree; plus, with the impending departure of Ian Smith, I do believe it's important that both Alan Fletcher & Jackie Woodburne remain figures on Ramsey Street.
Members Adamski
@Skylover @Liberty City You both make good points about Karl and Susan. I just personally find the excuses for having them away for weeks at a time are becoming tiresome. If they were travelling/lived elsewhere but could still pop back on a regular basis, I feel that the show could make plans more easily. But maybe that's just me.
Members Skylover
I think the absences could be written better. Like Karl could mention in one episode he's going to visit a family member and the next he's gone for a bit, they don't need to dwell on it so much. They have a lot of family members who live away like Malcolm, Libby, Billy, Ben, the twins, Rachel, Zeke, Elly, Bea, Katya, so it should be easy to write them out while they visit relatives. I feel like Neighbours has always dwelled too much on temporary absences. Cast in UK soaps disappear for long periods without much explanation. I have to say, it doesn't really bother me that much though, although I did miss Susan when she was written out to accommodate Jackie's holiday that was planned prior to the revival earlier in the year. Members Liberty City
I agree: the absences could be written a bit better, but they're not annoying to me.
Members DRW50
I agree with you. The whole point of Susan and Karl in recent years was their home was for waifs and strays, a backbone of the community. You can't really say that when they are gone half the time. It's especially noticeable now because Karl's brain-dead daughter is constantly in turmoil, and they aren't around most of the time. And when they are around, they still don't have enough involvement with her, aside from brief moments like Holly's therapist saying her parents are why she is the way she is. I can't argue Home & Away treats its older characters the way they could be treated, but John Palmer is the character I wish Karl could be. Instead, when Karl is around, he's wasted on nonsense like "Dr. Pooper," one of the worst stories the show did last year. The Holly issue gets worse because Izzy is never around either, so Holly just constantly whines, cries, curls up in a ball, sobs on the living room floor, and other than her "friends" (who never seem like that close of friends, to be honest), nobody reacts. I would either have Karl and Susan move off Ramsay Street or write Holly out immediately. I would write her out anyway.
Members Liberty City
Holly can go; it's long overdue for her to exit.
