Emmerdale: Discussion Thread

She's actually part of my very first, very hazy memory of Emmerdale Farm. I had this vague recollection of a girl named Rosemary, no more than that. It wasn't until much later I got it confirmed that there had actually been a Rosemary on the show.

Her very first episode could be found on Youtube for a brief while, but it was taken down. But there are other episodes uploaded there now with her in them. Here's one for instance

Trivia: Her co-star, George Fenton, has gone on to become a famous composer, writing music for many acclaimed wildlife series produced by David Attenborough ("Planet Earth", "Blue Planet" etc), and also for many movies by Ken Loach. His breakthrough came when he collaborated with Ravi Shankar to write the score to the multi-Oscar winning "Gandhi" (1982)

Is that based on my spoiler spec?

I get what you mean, although I don't mind her when she's written as nasty, rather than a saint or romantic heroine.

Charley Webb said last week that she's mostly staying there while her kids are young, then she wants to leave.

The spoiler is part of it, but I don't think my disdain for everything Dingle-related is a secret.

Debbie is everything I hate about the Dingles, and she is at the very top of my list of characters I would dump immediately if I got the chance. Her parents are up there too, but Charity at least has some wit and humour.

Very happy for them, yes.

@Nothin'ButAttitude I don't know if you saw any of yesterday's show but Kerry had a wig on and kept pulling faces, and it took me forever to figure out who she reminded me of. Finally I realized - a much less plastic Kim Zolciak (the early years).

Adam Fielding (ex-Kirin) is going to be on Krypton.

Ross' big story is starting next week.

Moira and Cain again? Really? I was certain the last scene tonight was his fantasy but she really did show up in that gleaming white coat, face all angelic, telling him they’d be spending the rest of their lives together. All because of a visit from Charity of all people? What a load of shite.

Moira makes up her own mind - I doubt Charity swayed her. I think that scene was mostly about completing the circle for viewers - Charity moving on and acknowledging Moira's love for Cain.

I'm mostly just glad all the back and forth with Cain and Moira is finally over. Her beating him up is still a very odd writing choice though. More of the show romanticizing abuse.

I get the feeling you're done with the show, but I think it's been alright this month - I've enjoyed more than I haven't, and I think they've had the balance right (for the first time in 3-4 years). It helps that a few of the stories I dislike haven't been on much.

I do think the stuff with David and Tracy and David is stupid, especially given that his last wife was sexually assaulted. He wouldn't be so chummy with a stranger that his wife obviously doesn't like or trust.

No, Carl, I’m not done with the show quite yet but come on, you KNOW Moira and Cain will break up AGAIN at some point in the future. Because Moira has been right for months-she’s insisted that unless Cain has truly evolved their relationship can’t ever work. Maybe because his issues with Faith has been somewhat  resolved he will evolve but I doubt it. The show is way too fond of his bad boy antics.

    • Where do you discover this crazy rumor??
    • Jill Farren Phelps was always very skilled at saying what she meant onscreen in the bluntest way possible, like whenever she wanted fans to support one character vs. the other (hence Megan McTavish groaning about having to write Kale Browne's Sam Rappaport into three days a week at OLTL). Perhaps you should consider doing the same. Historically your intent is always far more obvious than your efforts at coy embroidery anyway. You believe people are dismissing Phelps' accomplishments, and suggest misogyny and fan blinders allow people to too easily pigeonhole and dismiss her skill set. I think we all understand her varied skill set. We're saying it's not enough to make up for her deficiencies as a storyteller and creative. JFP was undoubtedly a skilled technical producer. As a solo storyteller, and de facto HW, she was a repeat and predictable failure. She was not the first or last EP (male or female) to think she was a writer. If you want us to stop taking your behavior personally when you suggest misogyny is at play in board opinions of JFP, perhaps you should consider spending the next 10+ years here not acting like you're the only one who gets it.

Melissa was here today & we went to Michael's Crafts & Ofc Depot. In Michael's there were two beautiful LITTLE girls who kept staring at me, so I gave them a littel wave & very quietly said HI & then did back. I told Melissa they were staring at me. She smiled & said "Purple. A lot of little girls love purple & you forget but you have purple hair. Seeing you their whole imaginations are transformed! Thinking "That lady has purple hair. That means I can have purple hair! They had no clue before seeing you that it was possible." I just laughed & laughed.
    • This opening scene is hilarious...it's like someone wrote out the script for Philip with one hand. And Rick...sniffing a scarf over and over. And in their next scene they are still sniffing the [!@#$%^&*] scarf as the camera stays all over Philip's bare chest and armpits as he keeps working out. Insane stuff.

Bay City better be ready, because I'm back!   At Vicky's apartment she is once again drowning in doubts and jealousy. Deep down she realizes that her dream wedding will be a farce and nothing can change that. Bridget tries to calm her down, but the heroine is determined to suffer. She is not hearing any positive thoughts. She doesn't believe Jamie will marry her. At the Cory Publishing building another farce is in process. Iris, once again pretending to be the angel of love and sisterhood... is telling Mac and Rachel some wonderful news. When Iris has good news, you really need to look out for yourself. That's when things are bad. So what are the news? Miss Devil has put Amanda up for an award! Mac is smiling from ear to ear, and Rachel is suspicious. Maybe that's the effect Iris is looking for. To once again accent on the fact that Rachel doubts and criticizes her daughter. Iris will do anything to destabilize their relationship. She is like a cancer. Back to Vicky! Jamie is at the door. Looking like a sad puppy, he has come with a surprise. No, he is not gonna leave her and her unborn... Not yet. He has bought her earrings. Sad face. How nice. NOT. Victoria, of course... manages to break one of them the moment she touches it. Bad premonition maybe? She was back in hysterics. It's not easy to trap a man into marriage. Then you have to live with someone that didn't want you in the first place.  We were introduced to a new character (to me at least she is new) - Cass's sister - Stacey. She is giving me "hidden skeletons in the closet"-vibes. Love a girl like that. Stunning actress. I like her. The highlight of the episode was the strange and creepy reveal of Evan the escort... hugging someone named Janice's grave. I remember she had an issue with Rachel... and Rachel killed her in self defense I think... It was hinted in prior episodes, but I lack the context and story. I just know that everyone at the Frame house was mad that Rachel killed the bish. But I also got the impression that this Janice was sick in the head. So Evan is now talking to her grave and telling her he is going to ruin Rachel's life basically. Oh, Evan... I liked you better as a sexy gigolo.  Overall - 10/10 - how can I rate it lower when I haven't watched in months!!!

    • Once again, Marlena and Kayla were used very effectively and I couldn’t be happier.  Marlena counseling Johnny and then Chanel was the best part of today. They’re really delving into the human emotion of this storyline and I think that’s a good thing. It feels so much mature than it was before. EJ’s fear about what could happen to Johnny if he doesn’t let go of his anger could lead to some really good storylines in the future.  I also really appreciate the way that Paula/Jeanne are mixing it up and having different characters interact with each other. It was nice to see Shawn and Johnny remember that they’re cousins and share a scene together. I liked the parallel that was drawn between the two of them, and what’s going on with their fathers. I did have mixed feelings about everything with Cat though. I enjoyed Chanel warning her about EJ, mostly because it played into the way that she was written today. But I wasn’t the biggest fan of the Chad/EJ scenes. The two of them discussing Chad’s potential feelings for Cat didn’t really keep my interest.  But above all, I feel that everyone is being used more effectively and that we’re getting a better understanding of everyone as well. And that was exactly what Days needed.
    • It's a wild story for sure, especially the final conclusion (and fireworks offcamera, like Victoria Wyndham tearing into Michael Logan).
