Loving/The City Discussion Thread

Didn't Cooper go for a while and then return briefly and he had found another woman? Then he came back briefly on The City? I can't remember.

I wish I could see those scenes with Stacey and Ava.

I was reading an October 1984 Digest and Patty Lotz is in so much of it...she and Perry Stephens are mentioned as one of the hot new couples (onscreen), she's interviewed in a gossip section; in the issue before that they'd used a sexy-type photo of her in their recap. I wonder exactly when or why ABC chose to recast. It seemed sudden.

Roya Megnot took over in early October 1984. Here what I found in a review:

"When « Loving » began it’s new time period last week, actress Patty Lotz had been replaced by newcomer Roya Megnot in the role of Ava Rescott. This falls into one of those categories of “who cares?” They seem pretty indistinguishable to the viewer, and one is just as good (or just as bad) as the other.

On the other hand, one the more interesting young female characters seen on soaps recently is former Galahad Club member Gina Daniels played by Annabelle Gurwich on “Guiding Light.” Both actress and character have made such a strong impression on “GL” viewers that, although she’s not a contract player, she will be seen frequently in the coming months. Of her popularity continues, she will undoubtedly be offered a contract."

Finally got the chance to watch the episode saynotoursoap posted.

I was surprised to see it was credited to Ralph Ellis. I had thought Nixon had lasted until the summer of 1987, but I guess I was wrong. Does anyone know when Ellis arrived?

I thought the opening teaser with Lottie in the car was effective played to the tune of 'Why Do Fools Fall in Love.' I also liked the use of Chris de Burgh's 'Lady in Red' at the Rescott home, a set I don't believe I'd seen before. I know SoapNet always claimed it avoided 'Santa Barbara' and later 'Ryan's Hope' because of music rights. I wonder if 'Loving' presented a similar situation?

Eban Japes seemed very different in this clip from the man who was threatening to ruin Lottie / Curtis' wedding in the promos and later shot up Steve and Trisha's wedding.

Was this a Friday episode? Tony had been working as Alden handyman and was suddenly unmasked as a doctor. I can just see the dollar signs in Ava's eyes as I type this. BTW, I thought the stuff with Ava and the Corinth Arms was awkward in the way Ben / Marina would have awkward conversations about money on 'Guiding Light.' I didn't think it seemed realistic, but maybe others would disagree.

Regarding turnover, a year from this episode only Trisha, Ava, and Kate would still be around.

I think Steve may have been around too, but just barely.

Eban and Lottie both seemed very different to me. She seemed much less of a victim.

I thought the show looked great - much better than I had expected. I especially liked some of the details of the sets, like Nick's place. The flashback was cheesy as hell though.

You can find some of the Dolly story in the 1985 and 1986 synopses I posted. Essentially she was coerced into a sexual relationship with a man who lied to her that her long-lost child was being sexually exploited and that if she kept sleeping with him he would help her find and save the child.

Ugh, sounds like one of Agnes' definie missfires.

Watching the 1987 episode posted, it really seems a lot better than the impression I got. The production values are much better than I expected, and the acting and writing definitely at least solid. I see this was by the time Ralph Ellis took over, but I guess Agnes had left sometime that same year, so many of the characters could have been her creation.

I'd be surprised if she didn't write the story or early stuff for Eban Japes, given that she created a similar character for Cowles on AMC.

Some pages back I posted a photo and quote from "Lotty Bird" and a ton of synopses, if you haven't read them. I also have an interview with Cowles from 1987 somewhere on my computer, if you want to see it.

    • This is just a guess but I feel like the fact that they keep mentioning her dead husband is for a reason. We know Martin has a secret that likely involved someone dying. Martin's victim could be Alan which Leslie/Dana either knows about or finds out and she uses that to blackmail the family into letting her crimes slide.
    • Just thinking how the Ruth/Leticia guest spot really cemented how Days had changed. Stunt casting with a campy/comedy character in a 'wacky' storyline was something that a few years previously would have been completely out of place on Days (and most other soaps for that matter).
    • I am interested to see how they handle Leslie/Dana down the road. If she continues in this path, it would be unrealistic to have her around. Like other shows have done this with a 'villian' character and ended up with people looking stupid putting up with someone they detest. Another thought-could they be building up to a murder story? Maybe Les/Dan will be left in a coma and we will have a whodunit with several characters as suspect. It would also be a chance to redeem her I wonder how long the show will go w/o resorting to soap cliche stories-twins,switched at birth, murder mystery, long lost child etc
    • Yeah, Martin really did make me laugh when him and Smitty jumped up to drag Leslie out. I am interested in seeing how this fallout will impact his storyline as well. Especially since he is so protective regarding his family/family's image. I am interested in seeing how he will interact with Eva for the time being, they did have a warmer interaction earlier on once they met. But he seems to have doubts about her possibly being Ted's right now. I wonder how long it might take for him to come around with her. I could see the younger generation warming up to her quicker than the older ones. Though of course I think there will be anger/tension for a while regarding the reveal and her role in it. Perhaps Naomi/Chelsea will ease up on Eva first then eventually Martin/Kat might down the line. I really do love Nicole. I'm glad that DD is playing her. She really is the heart of the family and also agree the show. She is so easy to root for and I'm looking forward to seeing how things work out for her. I am enjoying the development of most of the characters on this show. I enjoy most of them including Bill with his trifling self lol. I do feel that Bill's love for his daughters is genuine and that gives him some depth. A few of the characters I don't care for that much (like Bill, Ashley, Vanessa). I wasn't too big on Andre at first, but I am warming up more to him as the actor is settling into the role. I like most of the characters on this show. Also, I am interested in seeing what happens if Eva indeed goes and lives with the new doctor that was introduced. I could see this adding another layer to her story, maybe she will become more vixen-ish, on what type of relationship they end up having. And/or maybe she will end up becoming more hardened as she deals with being an outcast, especially if she falls out with Leslie as well. I think that AM will do a good job of showcasing the different layers of this character as she deals with the fallout of the affair/paternity reveal.

Got another sad news from the Bahamian community (not a celebrity)  https://www.instagram.com/p/DJMSrYCgyes/?igsh=NTc4MTIwNjQ2YQ== Former Bahamian Senate President J Henry Bostwick, Husband of former 1st Bahamian Female Cabinet Minister Dame Janet Bostwick is dead yesterday on his 86th birthday.    Thanks and for those who've aren't familiar with the talk shows in The Bahamas on this thread here, his talk show named The Freedom March with Dr Rodney Moncur that airs on ILTV and The Beat 103.5 FM Nassau every weekday afternoons. IIRC, he suffered a illness before he died.  Here's the link for his final taping of the show before his death: https://ewnews.com/this-is-powerful-rodney-moncurs-final-sign-off/

    • One thing I thought about is if Hayley will have a reaction to Bill threatening to kidnap and sell a baby. That's another level of viciousness and with her just having thought she was pregnant it might make her feel some type of way.
    • You're welcome. Fall 1982-Spring 1985 was the peak of primetime soaps. What a time to have been alive.
    • 1990/91 Cheers, Roseanne, A Different World, The Cosby Show, Empty Nest, The Golden Girls were still Top 10 shows, and Murphy Brown and Designing Women became Top 10 shows. It was the following season that I think was the transition season for sitcoms.
