OLTL: Discussion for the week June 9-13

I would love to see the Woleks and Halls back myself, and I hope the anniversary doesn't come and go without at the very least liberal referencing to them. I agree OLTL's multicultural canvas is not what it should be, and the one real flaw I find with OLTL (aside from Bo and Lindsay, and the Starr and Cole story which RC is stuck working with) is the lack of African-American and other minority representation. But given that RC has still been on the job less than a year (his first continuous solo, non-Higley scripts began in September '07), I will give him time to bring that back. And right now, I'm just glad it's not Evangeline.

You're right about the lack of diversity. The Halls would be a touch of class. Ellen H. is probably too much to ask for. My partner, and many other people of colour I know from that generation and older, got their start with soaps via OLTL and AMC, mostly OLTL. Evangeline was a popular, polarizing character, but her absence is in no way the definitive story of OLTL's lack of racial diversity.

Vee, your earlier post hit the nail right on the head and impressed me greatly. I agree with you - Ron Carlivati is doing what GOOD soap writers do: write frothy, fluffy melodrama REALLY, REALLY well. There's still messages, such as themes of family and friendship, but unlike Malone's work it doesn't come off as a public service announcement.

As for the Justis Bolding/Sarah stuff... I like Bolding's Sarah, but the problem is that the character has been so mismanaged in the past that Carlivati has yet to write something that really defines her. I think she's got a good range and I look forward to what she brings to the table when Tina comes home.

Why is Sarah crying over Nash so damn much?

Jay, I think it was just a matter of throwing Justus B. a bone to chew on, --- mostly so that we know she's up for the task of dealing with her mother Tina/AE.

She was brilliant on AW. It's her later career that wasn't alll that. Much like Ryan Phillipe as Billy on OLTL, IMO.

To each their own. I liked her, but that was back in the day when I just watched and didn't analyze so much. Probably one of the reasons I'll remember AW as one of my favorites of all time.

Why is Sarah crying over Nash so damn much?

bc he was her friend. They spent alot of time alone together over the past few months working together. Its only natural that she'd be incredibly upset over what happened

Well they did work closely together for a few months right before his death.

No one else is crying that much.....I think theres a reason...

besides Jessica though, who else was close with Nash? No one besides Sarah. I wouldnt expect anyone else to get as upset

Notice how today, Addie said Viki was able to rise above her bad parenting - but so bad about Todd and Tina

The scenes seem a bit longer today. That's good.

They do, don't they? (I'm watching the end-of-episode montage on SoapNet "as we speak". Take notes if you're watching, Ellen Wheeler. That's how it done.) Either they're longer, or they're more in-depth. Either way, OLTL, keep it up!

I loved watching Blair and Addie's conversation so much. Aside from the bits of foreshadowing (you just know we're heading for another Todd/Blair showdown, as well as the whole scary truth behind Blair's conception), it was just a nice, simple, quiet talk between mother and daughter that covered not just Starr's dilemma, but Blair's, Addie's, Viki's, Todd's and even Tina's. No beating-you-over-the-head plot advancement, just a little character development. Nice.
