DAYS: March 2008 - The moment of truth

P&G will pull the plug on ATWT, if CBS cancels GL. Losing two soaps for the price of one isn't worth it.

Plus, who the hell wants DAYS in GL's spot? GL has the most inconsistent time slots across the country and it doesn't air in every market, that would kill DAYS on CBS right there.

Affiliate clearance is another thing, especially with how stubborn the affiliates are these days. Some ABC affiliates wouldn't even air PC and the City when they first started and throughout their entire run, we saw how that turned out.

DAYS in between Y&R/B&B would be great. Sony would want that but the Bells wouldn't.

Also, maybe cut down ATWT/GL to 30 mins?

2009 Lineup:

12:30pm - 1:30pm: Y&R

1:30pm - 3pm: DAYS/B&B or B&B/DAYS

3pm - 4pm (or morning hours): ATWT/GL

Toups, do you know why they can announce the show's future in March 2008? I mean, Passions didn't get a one year notice or does this mean they can also get rid of DAYS in 2008?

Anyway, if DAYS gets to switch networks, wouldn't it have to switch filming locations, since it's taped at NBC's Burbank studios (which is on sale now btw)? With Passions shutting down production in April, maybe DAYS could possibly film there? Isn't Passions filmed at a location that's also owned by CBS, though its not filmed at the main CBS Television City location where Y&R and B&B are filmed.

I now think Days' future may depend on one thing in particular....

If Ken Corday is allowe dto stay in control as EP. That man has done his level best to destroy that show, and if Sony can cut some type of deal that puts Ed Scott in control and pushes Ken Corday out of the EP chair, and leaves him as onwer (Along with Sony), it just may stay on NBC.

The show now has to show consistent improvement, and that is the key. So, I would ship KC off Mount Everest and keep him thereuntil Stefano can erase his memory or until he can be made to become a good EP, becuase he is poison to his own show.

We'll see soon.

We all know the chances of NBC keeping them are slim, even with a ratings upswing. NBC was looking to get rid of Days even with ratings in the 4.0's in 1998.

Days needs to improve and continue the ratings upswing to get other networks interested. They need to ensure it's an offer no network can pass up.

I still think there is an outside shot at staying at NBC but it's likely that the budget would be slashed even more and that isn't good. If Days can get to a solid #3 or #2 and stay there, then I am optimistic.

Good to know when we will get news and it's good that it's in March because it gives the show a year to look I would imagine.

Also, I know what Frons said last year but that was also when Days was bleeding out in the ratings. Alot has changed since then and if Days continues it's upswing, Frons will have a much better case to bring Days to ABC. As for ABC rejecting Days before, I never heard it that way. I heard it was Corday who preferred staying put because he didn't want to give up ownership but that may all change now. He may be willing to negotiate something. Who knows. I would hate it on ABC though with Frons.

I don't want another show to suffer just so Days can go on but I also have to wonder too if Days takes a show like AMC's place or GL, how many fans will revolt? I mean, numbers are down across the board so even if those fans leave, if Days is higher rated and can brings it's fans with it then they won't have a problem. Days survived a big time switch this Fall and is getting good numbers so I think it can survive a move. It's one of the most popular soaps, afterall. Again, I don't want any soap cancelled but I don't think Days would take it on the chin from revolting fans if it happened. Things are much difference now. I'm sure they will be angered but I don't think we will see the backlash Passions received and even then Passions did pretty well until it ended up making poor creative decisions on it's own. Passions was doing very well numbers-wise it's first few years and was well on it's way until it hit a wall.

I don't know. I just doubt Sony will let the show fade off and Days being cancelled will result in one of the biggest backlashes you will ever see, just like if GH or Y&R is cancelled. I think it will survive elsewhere but I have my worries about what will happen after that with the budget and all. We'll see but I'm fairly confident it will still be with us past 2009.

This whole situation sucks for all soaps fans. I just hope it doesn't go an ugly route.

IMHO, Days is done. i am 99% sure that NBC is giving it the ax for many reasons - the low ratings, the high cost to make it, and the fact that it no longer has a daytime lineup. On ABC you have Live! The View, AMC, OLTL, GH, and (in most markets) Oprah. CBS has 4 soaps. NBC has... Days. and whatever its local networks air. That just doesnt go well, esp with its main daytime show being low rated. Plus the can ax it and place anything in its place for prob half the cost and make a bigger profit. TBH.

its only hope is this writers strike. Days would be just about the only non-reality show on NBC able to produce new shows. That has to sppeal to ad execs on some level - plus its a good stable place to air promos for all those new reality crap.

its only other hope would be Soapnet - not abc. I could see Soapnet picking it up and making it a half hour show and slash the cast in a third and ditching most sets. also some top talent would HAVE to go. the only problem with that is would Days fans accpet it? would it be able to get a new audiance on a new network?

if it does end tho it will be intersting to see what actors and actress' go where. (Martha Madison, Alison Sweeney, Rachel Melvin are sure to be snatched up by another soap in an instant)

I don't see Corday giving up complete ownership either. That is why I think CBS is perfect. I don't know. Sony brought Ed Scott in and seems really behind the show. I don't see them letting it die, especially if the ratings continue to improve. I just think Days chances are much better right now, especially with the way all the other soaps are struggling. If Days shows it can consistently bring in the numbers again, then I don't see why a network like CBS or ABC wouldn't take them, especially when some of their soaps are struggling to maintain what they have. I can also see Sony making a pitch to CBS too, given Y&R and B&B are there. I don't know how much they can do but Sony was angry as hell about NBC's announcement last January and then we had Corday saying in August NBC was supporting them and that Ed had been giving a bigger promo budget. There is also more promos in primetime for Days now so maybe NBC will surprise us.

The thread's title had me thinking DAYS characters would be on that new lie detector show.

But seriously, leave Oakdale out of this. Let's see what the situation is before deciding that the P&G shows need to be cancelled or shrunken to accomodate DAYS. The new regime has given it a resurgence that all soaps deserve, so why start giving other shows last rites prematurely? It's too bad Oprah won't step in, since she likes to OWN everything.

What happened with Fox's decision to air daytime programming? If NBC doesn't want Days, I'd love to see Fox put their money where their mouth is and pick up the show as an anchor for their daytime lineup. To me, that would be better than trying to push another soap off the air. As for replacing any canceled soap with another soap...since when. Port Charles wasn't replaced. Passions won't be replaced. And neither will Days. Let's hold on to all of these soaps for as long as we can. JMO.

    • PREACH Victor being written as he was 20 years ago to support EB's ego or some misguided belief that what worked decades ago is still relevant is destroying the show. Victor comes off as a rambling old fool holding on to vendettas and a desperate need for perceived power. His children still cow-towing to him makes them look equally foolish. If the writing portrayed Victor as  more of an irritant to them then maybe it would work.
    • They desperately need another meeting spot that isn’t Orphy Genes or the Country club. Y&R is awful now but there’s at least GCAC, Crimson Lights, Society, and the Jazz room at GCAC to meet at. 4 places is definitely better than 2 and I can’t imagine these rich folks literally only eat at their damn country club.
    • I support all of this. 80 year old Victor reading lines off the table or teleprompter until it’s time to yell at someone and still being the main man driving story on the show is absolutely ridiculous to me and one of the biggest issues with the show. I respect Braeden for wanting to keep working in his old age is great and all, but WHY IS HE THE LEAD?
    • I believe they said 27 sets. We have not seen that many maybe around 20. Perhaps they meant they have space for that number. I would like to see another meeting place -maybe a restaurant that could fit in b/w Orphy's and the Country Club. Casual but classy. Jacob/Naomi need a living room and it would be good if Vern/Anita had a smaller study/library so they're not always in the same room. I guess budget plays a part. For example, maybe the plan is for Jacob/Naomi to get a home down the track when they become more prominent. I really hope that outdoor sets come into use. A terrace at the Country Club or a few shopfronts-a park maybe. Speculation re June. I would go with a Hayley connection as she needs something else to do apart from whining to Bill. June could  provide some conflict cos I don't see Bill being that interested in having her around. He could try to buy her off, upsetting Hayley or she could overhear/uncover some dirt on Bill so he's forced to keep her around. The parents of Tyrell/Samantha can be held for down the track along with the mystery of Andre's parents. The advantage of a new show is that there is so much from character's pasts that can be used. An ex for Vernon or Anita and various relatives to come out of the woodwork.
    • Oh god I haven’t gotten to that episode yet, you have to be [!@#$%^&*].ing kidding me. I will say to my surprise, the Danny actor no longer bothers me. He has actually improved quite a bit.
    • I hear what you are saying, but I feel there is definitely an opportunity for improvement. If the set problem is to remain, then the whole focus has to change. Business has to take a back seat if there are no sets available to support story. As I have said before return to Jabot and have a number of characters working and interacting there. They seem super reluctant to do it but Victor needs to be a more supporting character.  Eric Braeden seems determined to carry on and that is of course admirable, but keeping Victor as this dominating force has been detrimental. Have a sweet reunion of Sharon and Nick and marry them off for good. Bring on Faith and I'd even have Adamson back as Noah at this point to support Nick/Sharon in a parenting role. They really need to bite the bullet and drop one of the following -Billy, Chelsea, Phyllis or make them recurring like Abby/Ashley with appearances or short term stories when appropriate. Free up some space for new or returning characters- Noah, Allie, Fen, Moses, even a recast Dylan.
    • Today was really boring. I get we needed to have Martin accepting Eva but man I needed some Leslie today. Anita being hung up on was intriguing though.
    • Yup, that's John Mahoney, a few months before the star-studded 1986 production of The House of Blue Leaves. Also, God bless TPTB for thinking that a circus storyline was gonna grab the hearts and attention of viewers.
    • I don't think we have. I suspect @Paul Raven could confirm it for sure.  ETA: off the top of my head, I counted 13 sets (counting the hotel room Doug/Vanessa made up in separate from the hotel room Ted is in unless it was refashioned).
