2008: The Directors and Writers Thread

Well, there's a reason why Walsh and Beall are credited everyday. They are the associate head writers, a step above the plain ol' dialogue writers. They may not be writing breakdowns in the traditional sense, but I think they're helping B&E lay out the episodes every week and writing their thrusts.

I have to agree. Walsh has been on my list ever since that horribly un-funny July 4th episode she outlined and of course my mortal enema-- enemy Beall wrote the script for.

I loved her scripts. They sounded like actual CONVERSATIONS!

Marland said give it 6 months :-). Just keep repeating as a mantra...and then wait till September.

Seriously, if they really have to burn off those LML writer contracts, that is going to affect things for a while yet. I thought the dialogue picked up, but the story beats got worse, once LML's writers returned. Which IS more of the same, ahem, crap.

But, I'm sure Maria and the Bells are watching and pruning and waiting for the first day where it makes sense to release people. Also, with household ratings as low as 3.6 some days, of course someone will soon take action, don't you think?

Since Maria's been credited there since December 26, 2007, I'll count from that. As far as I'm concerned, nothing's been happening on this show for a good month and a half and they don't have any intention to kill some very bad storylines or let some very bad characters/actors go.

WORD

However, Maria's in charge of the overall storylines, and so far, NONE OF THEM are anything to brag about. I thought HW's were supposed to start of with some type of bang, well, we've gotten the opposite.

These are the same people that sat back and watched LML gain more and more power at the show and let her creatively rape the poor's show creative structure. I don't trust or have faith in anyone anymore.

If Maria doesn't do something to impress me soon, I hope her husband fires her ass. Promote Natalie Minardi Slater to HW and perhaps bring Trent Jones back, if they can.

Also, I think Josh Griffith is a VERY WEAK EP. I wouldn't be surprised if many of the show's problems laid on him. He was there for all of Latham's mess and is probably partly responsible for much of the stuff we're seeing now. It's time Y&R got a stronger EP for a change. It's time to BEG David Shaughnessy to come back, or Brad should send Ron Weaver to Y&R and let him become EP there. I think he could be good enough and he's been a producer on B&B for years, surely he could make a decent EP.

I think Josh Griffith was the Bell's inside man. LML appeared to be Sony's bitch, so it makes sense that Griffith survived the purge, I believe he and Brad Bell are friends. He is a weak EP and needs to be demoted or fired if things don't change rapidly. Ron Weaver or David Shaughnessy would be excellent choices.

I am still reserving judgment on MAB. She MUST fire the LML primetime hack writers because it is evident that they are ruining this show. Overall, the show has improved. However, it is not the level of improvement Y&R needs, I'm giving her till December 26 to prove herself, I'm giving her a year due to LML's creative rape of the show. So far it's all one big holding pattern...but we'll see. I am enjoying Adam, Skye and a reinvigorated Jill (although there is much work to be done still with Jill). I am hopeful.

Though a lot of things still seem to be in a holding pattern and dull as dirt, the show does seem to be picking up a bit. Maybe it's because they're weaving Jill back into the fabric of the story. Jess Walton looked fierce on Friday, and she seems invigorated. The David gambling stuff is a big bore, but I'm hoping it will play into the larger picture of Brad's motives and an escalating Nikki/Jill feud. They've got to do something about Phyllis. I throw up a little bit in my mouth every time they give us these "giggly Phyllis loves Nick" things like they did on Friday's episode. Somebody make it stop and give Phyllis back her spine.

I think we're all actually more or less on the same wavelength...the show is better than it was...but currently stagnant...

I was glad to see Jess back, but the problem is that, ultimately, Jeff and Gloria are a bore. I don't know why...but I think it is because they're both bad people, and so we don't invest in their being happy. Gloria's current karma kick was funny for a day...but it so clearly not sincere. So that doesn't redeem her. If...somehow...they were making each other better people... Also, while I am THRILLED TO DEATH THAT A REAL-LIFE JERRY DOUGLAS IS BACK ON CANVAS...Alistair needs to be dialed back. Given Jack's wistfulness for his dad, we need to learn that (unbeknownst to Al) he is a long-lost Abbott, and shares some fundamentally decent characteristics with John. As time goes on, he can come to occupy--albeit with more flamboyance--the sober paterfamilias role.

I date the 6-month clock from March because that is when the WGA strike ended (on screen) and the LML writers returned. Before that, it really was a crisis-mode strike-mode, and I'm not holding ANYONE responsible for any of it. (But, since it was such an improvement from the preceding, I'll note they did pretty good).

Maria's sole HW tenure began this week or last week (right?)--on screen. The WGA writers have been back for a few weeks. So, under Marland's 6-month time frame (which is arbitrary, but I do think it's a good time to take stock), I want to see how I feel in September.

This week WAS NOT good. Take Skye. EXCELLENT casting. BUT...the very day she is introduced, she and Adam spend the night apart? WTF? That's exactly how to kill a character...no emotional revelation...just instant plot-plot-plot. That is a classic LML move.

I agree about giggly Phyllis. I mean, I find it endearing...but this is not the Phyllis we love. Even Stafford says the character is permanently internally damaged. We need to see her fighting for something out of insecurity...AND FAST.

The Jill-Nikki-Brad corporate intrigue is good. Jill will flip her lid if Nikki hires ANOTHER family member. I'd like to see Jill remember that Brad was her sexy pool boy. I really just want Mr. Bardwell off the screen (like David Chow)...so I don't want a romance here.

Yes, there is MUCH to fix. I'd like to say I'm optimistic about my September stock taking...but I am not.

I've tuned out again out of pure boredom. The show is back to its old style and pacing, just there is nothing there to keep you tuning in each day. I agree, Maria has a huge challenge and we need to give her some time, but I am not seeing much improvement as of yet. Still alot of crap stories still pushing forward and too many Friends of Latham still pollute that writing staff.

Same here. The show is too boring for words. I havent watched a full eppy in weeks. The show is slow. Nothing...I mean nothing is going on. And who the hell is the new girl with Victor? She sucks!!!

Hahaha...the pairing is odd to say the least. I find it very blah. The show right now is an a coma. I thought things would get better once LML was gone. But things havent changed. There are still characters on the canvas who should have been written out once LML left.

Victoria/Sabrina....BORING.......NuPhillip...already forgot this name thats how his story has been a bust...oh yeah...Cane/Lily.....BORING TOO!! Two bad pairings right there.

The writers should just f***ing turn the show over to Jess Walton and make Jill the center of the Genoa City universe. I can't tell if the writers are purposely trying to make Jill more prominent, or if its mostly Walton's doing...dominating scenes (in which she is supporting) by acting circles around the more major characters she is supposed to be supporting. Whatever it is, she's wonderful, and she brings to life even the dullest scenes and stories, of which there is no shortage these days.

I can forgive MAB for whatever went on during the strike that kept the show boring, but what's her excuse now? She is still forging ahead with the same stories.
