2008: The Directors and Writers Thread

I was pretty sure that ship had sailed too, but I have my doubts now. With Alden's continuing at B&B possibly up in the air, and the likelihood of Babs and Jimbo being out at AMC while Agnes temporarily HWs as she scouts for a suitable HW (of course, this is all conjecture), I am just connecting the dots. I know she had her issues with Frons, but maybe they can settle those for the good of the show. I realize this is probably just wishful thinking, but I can hope, can't I? Save the Ryan, Kendall et al clusterfuck, the show has been much more entertaining lately. I actually look forward to watching it every day, and I honestly haven't been able to say that since 2005. Maybe it's my imagination, but the show has a different feel to it, and I can't believe that Babs and Jimbo, given their track records, are responsible for the upbeat swing.

Tom Casiello's blog confused me about something. I have spent some time checking out this thread, and Toups' "resources", and I am confused.

Tom says only three shows now have "Breakdown Writers".

But Toups' listing says most shows have returning "Associate Head Writers".

So, what is it? I guess these are not the same thing?

Which three shows still have breakdown writers?

It kind of bothers me that all of the writers that went FiCore were from daytime. I know the soaps are already the laughing stock of the industry, but it kind of sucks. I'm not sure how I feel about the writers that went FiCore, as I was never a part of a Union, but it seems a little disloyal. In the end I have no right to judge anyone and I don't know the circumstances. I find it interesting though that all the soaps excluding ATWT & GL now have at least one writer that is FiCore. And what can I say about Passions? I guess the writing team wanting to be allowed to write the end of the series.

ATWT just got rid of the breakdown position, so that leaves Y&R/B&B/OLTL as the only shows left. But I fully expect OLTL to follow the other soaps by the end of 2008.

For my archives, I call breakdown writers, "Associate Head Writers." But at some shows, it can be technical. For example at Y&R, Cherie Bennett & Jeff Gottesfeld are "higher level" AHW because they're listed everyday, while other writers who write breakdowns are only listed for their particular episodes. It can get confusing, so I like to just call all breakdown writers, "Associate Head Writers." :)

This is bad for the unemployed writers, but I think it can be a good thing. These soaps have needed to reduce their writing teams for a while now. If I'm not mistaken, the breakdown position wasn't always apart of soap opera writing teams anyway. I guess more work will be placed on the script writers, but that's how its done on UK and Australian soaps, which are more of a "writer's genre" and where script writers are of the primary importance usually.
