WRITING DUO JOINS STAFF

Long-time writing partners Barbara J. Esensten and James Harmon Brown have joined the writing staff of "Days of Our Lives" as associate head writers. Esensten and Brown have been collaborating together for many years, since they first met in 1983. At the time, Esensten was a radio reporter and Brown was a reporter at the Los Angeles Times. Their first writing assignment together was for two years at ABC's primetime soap "Dynasty." From 1992-1993, they wrote for "Guiding Light." From 1994-1997, they were head writers for "Loving", and when the show's format changed in 1995, they became co-creators of its spinoff, "The City." They then moved on to "Guiding Light" from 1997-2000 and "Port Charles" from 2000-2003. Most recently, they wrote for "One Life to Live" from 2004-2005. They've been nominated three times for Daytime Emmys, winning in 1993 for their work on "Guiding Light." Brown, 57, was born on April 20, 1949. Esensten was born on June 1, 1937. At 69, she is the senior member of the "Days" writing staff. In other news, writer Jeanne Marie Grunwell Ford has left the series.

Also, I heard that their stuff on PC was beyond suckage.

I've seen video interviews with them, and they act like they're half asleep, LoL. They were incredibly boring, vampire-like creatures.

Alot of their stuff on GL was very hit-and-miss, though their good stuff was VERY good. Then again, budgets were better than, production values were superior then...

We shall see what happens, I suppose.

I've said forever now that Days needs an entire overhaul of the writing staff. Not just the headwriter, but the entire writing staff. Breakdowns and scripts were terrible... it was all just so disjointed and BEYOND bad. I can't believe they're actually ditching the entire staff! It's a risk, but one that needed to be taken.

The only exit I'm really sad about is Geier.

    • I thought Cat would know Shane from the rescue mission that saved her and John from Clyde? I wonder if the next beat comes from exploring Cat and John's imprisonment?
    • The June 5th scene of Cat reacting to a photo of Sami -- wasn't spoiled in advance. No idea what that was about. There have been no spoilers implying that Cat knew Shane, just nothing. No idea what today's Cat stuff was about. (you don't want spoilers, so not posting any here, but honestly there were no spoilers about this, we are all surprised).
    • The show did a good job of having today feel like a funeral atmospherically. I'm happy they're making sure to state that Tate and Arianna consider each other family as the last thing we need is another Alex situation. However, it's very strange she has yet to have a scene with Will. Today is just part one, of course, so hopefully that on-screen reunion is yet to come. I also really want to see Carrie/Will/Arianna with Kate as well and hope Kate gets a little moment of her own regarding John. I forget if I mentioned this before, but real life affecting reel life when it comes to Maggie not being involved is just a crying shame. I'll never get over it. I wasn't bothered by the little hint of intrigue with Cat and Shane. Being spoiler free, I had no idea that little moment was going to happen or what that could be about. Was Shane the one calling her before? (Hypothetically asking, don't spoil me). I hope Steve shutting down BlackPatch sticks. I can't imagine what they will do with him though. Alice Halsey again proving why Rachel was recast. She's just effortless. Bring on seeing Tony again! He had the cut last week, too. Did he hit his head in the scene where he first got sick with the flu or was it a real life instance that they haven't talked about. Glad I'm not crazy thinking I missed something.

The 50s and 60s are over. Storytelling won't go back to that type. The 80s and 90s are over. Storytelling won't go back to that type.   I understand the nostalgia and enjoying a certain type of storytelling that was popular when growing up/being 20, 30 yrs old. That's why I watch TV series from the 70s and 80s and not as much current television. But I understand that people's attention spans have changed and therefore storytelling has changed and everything has gotten more expensive and there are more and more projects competing for eyeballs and the big flashy stuff is what makes people look up from their phones 5 seconds before going back to them.  We can never go back to before.

date: Monday, June 9 | Teresa Zimmerman, Lynn Martin | Steven Williford YAY! Caroline is back in action at the law offices. I adore Caroline! She is a woman of business, and she handles her business quite well. Could this be the chance for Tomas to move ahead at Bill Hamilton Esq.? Madison is doing the usual tests for strokes: smiling, holding out the hands, etc., but I do wonder if she'll have him touch the tip of her finger and then the tip of his nose. That one is not easy at all. Trust me, I know! It's about time Derek becomes useful: helping to take down Dana by witnessing her interrogation of Ashley at Orphey Gene's. Oh, Nicole is showing up to question Eva, re: her interactions with Laura. This will either be a bitchfest or it'll be a heartfelt one. Cantankerous? Yes, Ashley! Call it like you see it! Is Tomas working with Katherine to set up Dana? I pray he is!! Child bride needs to calm her ass down; now she's hugging Naomi as if they're besties again? This isn't your "get out of jail" card, sweetheart. The weight that I am sure is now lifted from Eva's shoulders with Nicole accepting her apology? I love that for her. And I am sure, deep down, it helps Nicole to accept and hear it, as well. Dani showing up for Bill and their children? That's love right there, and you can tell how much it not only means for Bill but might also be reminding him of why he fell in love with her. Watch out, child bride; your time might be up by mid-summer! Katherine, you are sneaky... but I do have this sneaking suspicion this is going to blow up right back into your face before you know it. The awkward face-to-face with Chelsea and Madison. Dani introducing herself as "the first wife" is hilarious. I love it. Chelsea and Madison openly flirting in the hospital by the elevator is super cute!! Notes: Trisha Mann-Grant (Dana) continues to serve up the right amount of camp for American daytime. She's almost too good for daytime. I appreciate the new viewpoint of the outside of Dana's apartment. Nice that we can get these viewpoints that other soaps wouldn't dare to explore. Tide is seen in the scene; Tide commercials air right after. Today's jacket on Alex Alegria (Tomas) fits better than the past few he's worn. Hoping this trend continues.
