Passions: CANCELLED by DirecTV

Shawn, I completely agree with ALL your posts :)

Passions isn't my cup of tea, but there are people who like/love the show, then that's their perrogative.

I do think being cancelled twice in what, a little over a year is an embarrassment in itself and if I were a fan I'd rather see the show go out with a bang rather than fade into oblivion......

But the thing to remember is that soaps don't HAVE to be terrible.

They've gotten the reputation of being so(especially in recent years) because those in charge just don't care! For a lot of people it is about the paycheck and not about the art. It's more obvious on some shows than others, DAYS(pre-Ed Scott and even pre-Hogan) being the worst offender. The people over there were happy with being overpaid and leaving their audience underwhelmed for years.

People will always make fun of soaps, but that doesn't mean TPTB should stop producing quality content for those who watch it.

PASSIONS would be a very poor example for any cable or network exec to follow in terms of whether or not a move to cable would work. PASSIONS was available only to limited subscribers and wasn't available on all dish/cable carriers. Not sure if that would have made a bigger difference.

But, it wouldn't surprise me if PASSIONS came back to NBC once they got rid of DAYS post-Olympics.

I don't think NBC is going to try to find another home for PSNS. I was surprised they did this time.

I'm not sure about what announcement NBC will make in March over DAYS if you have to do it a year in advance. They didn't with PSNS it was January when it was announced. I remember hearing that Corday could shop the show around starting in September 2007.

Thank you very much. "Passions" may not be the best show on TV, but it is fun to watch. I do have this one question to ask:

Doesn't anybody here care that the cast and crew are going to be without jobs yet again? If this news is true, and I say "if" because it's not official yet, they are going to be unemployed. I feel the most terrible for them because in all I've read, they were happy to see that the show was continuing and they enjoyed working with DirecTV. Basically, they were all used as pawns by DirecTV. Like I said, it's NOT RIGHT!:angry::angry:

Frankly, with the exception of Juliet Mills, Ben Masters and Andrea Evans, the cast is damn lucky to be called actors with the level of skill that they bring to the airwaves, and really should try to find a trade in another industry.

Eye candy and monotone delivery does not great talent make.

The aforementioned trio are incredible performers and should be snatched up almost immediately.

But the renewal announcement is for the remainder of the contract, right? If DAYS isn't renewed, it will be over regardless of if the show continues after the Olympics into March 2008. The ONLY reason why NBC would be making the announcement is to get their affiliates ready.

An affiliate doesn't want to carry a dead show walking.

    • Many thanks to @skylark and @DRW50!
    • Thank u so much! I love that show and the more I see of it the more I want to find more of it even if it’s just in script form. But that house and especially the room looked like Victoria Winters room from dark shadows lol  this was great find! Thanks
    • I genuinely thought when they said she had been throwing up, we were going to get a pregnancy story. I’m actually not convinced we aren’t. Especially the way she and Doug danced around her own infidelity.
    • Shouldn't it be the other way? I don't think Taylor Hayes is playing Rebecca Budig.

    • And the most detailed discussion I've seen from an industry figure about some of JFP's worst choices as a producer (steamrolling over writers) was from another woman, Megan McTavish.
    • IMDb is definitely incorrect, because the final week of episodes in 1974 is uploaded to Youtube in audio form, and Mark and Laurie are there until the very end. The last episode shows Mark going back to the priesthood. I looked at the newspaper and the earliest reference to their house being haunted by Georgina is in December of 1973. This is dated Dec 14, but this same synopsis ran in the papers until the end of December in other publications. So it must have been within those last 3-4 months. I think Stephanie Braxton joined around 1969-1970 so that's probably right. I saw it stated in other newspapers that David Gale joined around September 1972.

    • Opal having siblings could add to the story. However, it raises questions about Tad's adoption. Why were the Martins allowed to adopt him if Tad had aunts or uncles who could have cared for him?  Logic limited the number of possible Gardner's (and whatever Opal's maiden name was).  Even though Linda Thorson would have been a hysterical choice given her British accent.  Especially because SOD often published questions by readers who wondered why Tad and Jenny didn't speak like their mother.   All of which is still not an excuse for Tad's evil doppelgänger Ted.
    • And if I remember correctly, at one point, they were considering having Linda Thorson play Opal's sister.
    • Interesting. Makes me wonder how the day to day looked for Secret Storm at this point in the run. This seems very to deal with the psychological aspect, I guess the "inner storm", and the music is almost sinister. If this is from 1974 there's not much room for dates it could've been from as it ended on February 8th.  It's hard to tell from an edit featuring just one storyline, but if this was the day to day it might've been heavy for the casual viewers.   ETA: Stephanie Braxton is credited to have appeared as Laurie from 1970-1973. David Gale is credited only in 1973 and Alexander Scourby from 1972-1973. I know IMDB isn't always right, but I'd say this is likely 1973 - I'm guessing all these characters exited before 1974 and this might be a part of their final storyline.
