Writer's Strike Thread

This makes perfect sense now...and it makes me an idiot for not putting it together sooner.

Why do I feel like I'm on "Murder, She Wrote" all of a sudden?

I'd take pictures, too, except, I'd be too busy picketing w/ the rest of 'em.

But, the fact that junior writers make as much as they do, IMO, justifies the strike.

This won't increase their salary all that much.

Could you write it explicitly, just to check that I'm thinking the same thing you're thinking? :)

Argh! Do I speak in code sometimes?! I got to work on actually posting and not thinking aloud.

I was just looking at the pictures and I noticed the writers were picketing outside of the Today Show Studio.

Well, I've been watching TODAY for two days in a row and I noticed that a) everyone but Meredith and Natalie Morales left for certain parts of the world(Matt in the North Pole, Al at the Equator, and Ann at the South Pole). B) they haven't done any shots directly outside of the studio.

And I realized by looking at the pictures you added that...the writers are holding up their signs out there. So, that's why they haven't done a camera pan of everyone outside Rockefeller Center waving their "Hi Everyone in Bumf*** Florida" signs.

Why do I feel like I'm on "Murder, She Wrote" all of a sudden?

LOL. I've yet to see an episode of that show.

Another reason to support the strike, IMO. I can't stand those camera hogs w/ their dorky signs.

Well, it's a good thing that's an "if," because you'd be banned from writing for any US Produced TV Show.

But what is decent pay? That's the question of the hour here...and that's what this strike is about.

Would you, as a writer, feel it was justified if a production company continued to make money off a product you wrote? Is it fair for those network heads to get that money and continue to support their families if you are still starving and are struggling between paying writing gigs?

If I were a writer in Hollywood, I'd much rather join a union in Hollywood that protected my rights, paid me fairly, and helped me between paying gigs than to just freelance it. That's a downright suicidal move.

Why would I be banned? Because I said damn?

Umm okay...as if they haven't said or shown worse on tv. Or maybe because I don't follow the party line? Not really getting your point there...

You would be banned from writing for U.S.-produced shows, NeoAngelicLiz, b/c of your anti-union stance, not b/c you used an expletive in your post.

LMAO, did you read Bellburve's post? He was speaking about the situation regarding the writers and the point you brought up, not you.

But of course, we know YOU'VE been banned before here. ATWTCAron4Evea, LiasonAgent, Brad4Ever, or whatever the hell you're going by these days.

NO, because you don't support the union! And once the strike is over, every studio will hire from those represented by the WGA. They probably won't hire you and if they do, you'll probably be paid minimum wage and not have your name shown in the credits.

How would you feel about that? Not even being credited for your work or being able to win awards for it because the production companies value your contribution that little?!

I apologize for implying you were ignorant, NeoAngelicLiz. Poor choice of words, on my part. That said, I think it's only fair to tell you that you should at least skim any thread before posting. That way, you, me, and everyone else can avoid unfortunate confrontations such as these.

>> To "continue" to do something means that I would have had to have started somewhere if I'm remember my English vocab right....

Again, mea culpa.

Perhaps, what I should have was, "...so for posters to continually make statements such as these...," or something to that effect. My point being, despite what several have cited in the way of WGA rules and regulations regarding this matter, several others continually make remarks, such as yours, that are, at best, misinformed.

>> just because the writers have their panties all up in a twist over wanting more money.

It's not just about money. It's about how, once again, the industry believes that writers are insignificant, and don't deserve a more substantial part of what they made possible in the first place.

>> Unions use to be good but nowadays they're just full of overzealous nutjobs who will attack anyone who they think is "anti union".

Where are you from, Haymarket Square, lol?

>> If someone wants to write for a show and has the TALENT not to mention is being payed a decent amount then they should take the job.

The fact is, though, those individuals stand to pay hefty fines, so is it really worth taking the job in the first place? Plus, with the way things are in the industry, anyone who crosses the picket line willingly, regardless of talent, carries an unfortunate "stain" in the eyes of most who did strike, or who are at least pro-union, which, in turn, will prevent that onetime scab a chance to secure employment down the road.

So, again, is it worth crossing the picket line?

You may happen to be against the WGA - or, at least, their position in their current situation - but the fact of the matter is, there is a union for writers, they have rules and regulations and stipulations in place to protect their rights, and no production outfit is going to buck against all that w/o asking for serious trouble, no matter how powerful they think they happen to be.

>> You're saying that they HAVE to hire these people back when/if the strike ends? And even if thats true whats to prevent them from firing the people who participated in the strike?

Let's put it this way: if your union went on strike, and once it was over, management decided to replace you b/c you wouldn't cross the picket line, how would you feel?

On second thought, given your stated opinion of unions, forget I even asked that question.

But, let's say it is you who is in the same position as the writers. Doesn't it stand to reason that if you were one of those who was generating original, scripted content for the internet and new media, that you should be entitled to a justifiable piece of the profits? Wouldn't you think it unfair that the producers and distributors stood to make a killing from the new revenues even though, w/o you, the content wouldn't exist in the first place?

>> As long as my show is still on the air and providing the same enjoyment and familiar faces then I'm satisified.

Which...pretty well sums up how you feel about the subject, I guess. Except, 1) that's pretty selfish, if you ask me; and 2) to suggest that the writers are merely "overzealous nutjobs" who should just shut up and do their jobs, is like me branding you as ignorant.

>> Yes the writers have a part in that but ultimately anyone can write a show

Okay, so, why aren't you?

I read your entire post but I"m just gonna answer a few of your questions because I'm sorta pressed for time over here...

I'm not writing a show because I frankly don't want to. Its my not desire. I don't have an urge to write a show. I do have opinions about what is written.

And I'm from California btw...I don't know what Haymarket Square is.

SO I'm guessing your earlier statement about these companies HAVING to hire these people back was false? Or is there some type of law/contract that says once this strike is over they all HAVE to be rehired and are prohibited from losing their jobs because they're on strike.

Actually, these days, she's going by "Veronica Sandbridge."

I did read his post!

He was talking about the writers thing and I THOUGHT he meant I would banned from writing on television because I said damn! What the heck are you talking about? Are you the one whos slow or something I even QUOTED his original post just to show what I responding to....

In short I don't know what your problem is but really get over it. If you don't like my stance on this ridiculous little fight thats fine but stop trying to start an argument with me.

Get thee to a U.S. History class - STAT.

I'm under the impression there is, but Toups seems to disagree. So, as I told Toups (which you'd know, if you would bother to read the thread), IF there is, then I stand corrected. And although I could be wrong about that one particular fact, in no way does it negate the bulk of what I have said.

Oh okay I just wanted to make sure. I mean in todays world and everything contracts seem to be the bottom line so my opinion on the situation really wouldn't change what would happen IF it were true you know?

Will this affect Grey's Anatomy you think?

Well, life sucks that way :), and from your posts, you seem to be the one who belittles everyone else's opinions, when it doesn't suit your agenda.
