ATWT: SOD "Making the Grade"

From the October 2nd issue of SOD:

Identity Theft: 4 and a 1/2 Stars out of 5

The actions has moved to the Snyder farm from the Hughes kitchen, but thanks to traditional, grounded storytelling and a slew of veterans who've hung in for the long haul, ATWT isn't so unfamiliar from the show Irma Phillips created in 1956

Heart Monitor: 2 out of 5 Stars

Maybe the "controversy" means it's getting special attention, but the best love story is the perfectly paced Luke/Noah attraction, an oasis of classic romance in a wasteland of instant couplings, ignored chemistry and inconsistent emotions. Jack and Katie rebounding from the shattering losses of their soulmates together is fine; its hard to believe they're so madly in love. The trouble brewing for Lily and Holden feels manufactured and about three years too late, and the Craig/Meg/Paul/Rosanna quadrangle has already become to hopelessly complicated for us to care.

Population Control: 4 out of 5 Stars

ATWT is blessed with a consistently excellent cast, who manage to pick up the slack and keep the show engaging even when the writing falters. Fans complain about underuse of veterans, but the show has such an abnormally large number of them that we have to give credit for doing their best. (Though more Hugheses would certainly be welcome)

Plot Shots: 3 out of 5 Stars

With a frustrating habit of introducing layered, promising plots that are truncated just when they're getting really good, ATWT is wildly unpredictable--in a bad way. We're all for cutting losses, but when that happens all the time, it's hard to stay invested. Things are picking up again, but a few requests: lose the cliff dives, quicksand and crystal meth........for good.

Historical Preservation: 3 out of 5 Stars

Attention to the past 51 years is so uneven, we can only assume it falls to the script writer or mysterious budgetary restrictions: some days tickle us with nods to character connections: others display blatant disregard of the recent past. Reintroducing Craig through Lucinda and Lily was inspired but spotty, and he's barely seen Katie; siblings Meg and Holden, and friends Lily and Carly have frequent heart to hearts, but Will hardly acknowledges Parker, who's hung out with Paul more than he has. (And we're docking them a full star for the heartbreaking ruination of Adam, which still smarts)

Overall Grade: 4 out of 5 Stars

We expect alot from ATWT, which is always so close to being the best show on daytime; a little more attention to detail and secure(but still adjustable) long-term plotting is all they need

I think some of those ratings are generous...Lily and Carly have frequent talks? Meaning about one a month since Carly's return?

Even the romance one seems generous, and it's only a two. The Luke/Noah romance seems forced and rushed, too...the only reason it seems like it's been paced right is that it's only on like one day a week.

It's more exasperating than complicated. If it could get Paul out of this god forsaken quadrangle, then fire Jean and Chris today, but I don't think it will.

Awww, Jean will not be going anywhere.

I also think that those ratings are genrous. Right now I would give them a 3/5

I do agree with the comment about the show's blatant regard for the recent past. And I agree about the quad, which I'm sure is no surprise lol

I think SOD gave ATWT the highest overall mark of any of the soaps. Either Passions or AMC got the lowest.

So the storytelling is grounded when Gwen has chosen a porn actress/meth addict to be her baby's surrogate mother? When Rosanna is practically doing cartwheels after a 2 year coma and NO physical therapy? When Jack and Carly's children are mysteriously sacrificed one by one as an excuse to tease viewers into thinking they'll reunite? Right. How are the vets helping to maintain Irna Phillips' intergenerational vision anyway, since the author admits fans are complaining about their exclusion? TPTB aren't doing their best in that department AT ALL. As much as I think Eileen Fulton tends to fumble her lines, I'd like to see her more than once a year. Nancy should be advising her own family instead of Katie, who never picks up a phone to call Lyla. Who was asking for the additions of Sophie and Cole at the vets' expense anyway? An expansion of Gwen's family right on the heels of Jennifer Landon's overexposure in a dual role!

All the soap mags are simply trash. They are in bed with the network executives. ATWT a 4 out of 5!? Do the writers at SOD even watch the show?

Here's MY ATWT's Report Card

Historical Preservation: 1 and a 1/2 out of 5 Stars

Overall Grade: 2 out of 5 Stars
