I didn't see a thread about today's episode yet so thought I'd start one sooooooo...

Discuss!

Today's Classic Days Clip:

In the winter of 1995, Stefano sent out 5 Marlena lookalikes into the world so that the authorities couldn't track down the real Marlena, who Stefano was about to kidnap. Meanwhile, John finds the fake letter written by Stefano (not Marlena), while a possessed Marlena scares the hell out of Celeste!

I thought Pete looked real young, too--more like Colleen's brother.

All the stuff with the handkerchief gave me a flashback to Sami's bridal shower, when EJ wiped away her tears with a hanky and then later held it against his cheek.

Getting a funny vibe from the Grandpa Shawn scenes. They felt like a farewell, a final farewell. The look he gave back into the Pub reminded me of Isabella's farewell scene at the loft.

Very good Lumi scenes today. I loved the reference to their past scheming and Lucas being right beside her. Great line from Lucas about spending "half my life not wanting anything to do with you and the other half wanting you so bad I couldn't see straight." It seems Hogan has finally got a firm handle on their history and what makes the couple tick.

Loved the discussion about their baby girl and Lucas protecting her the same way he protects Sami. "Lucas, the one thing I'm sure of in this crazy world and all the crazy things going on is that you are gonna be there for us."

These scenes and the brief vet interaction just about compensated for the tedium of the hankie saga. It seems Colleen is meant to be a teenager because the actor hired to play Pete looks barely a few years older than Ali. Couple that with the pornstache on James and I get a creepy cradle snatching vibe from Santo.

I agree. I'm not getting a romantic feel from these scenes at all, and I'm surprised because I was expecting a very romantic, Romeo and Juliet style love story. Instead, I'm a little creeped out by Santo pursuing a young, naive nun-in-training.

I liked the Lumi scenes alot more today than I did yesterday. I'm happy that they acknowledged Sami's past as a schemer. I agree it seems as if Hogan has a firm handle on their history.

Doug, Julie, Bo, Hope, John, and Marlena scenes were great. I liked the interaction they had between reading the letters. I might be in the minority, but I'm intregued as to what happens next for Santo and Colleen.

For some reason the thought of Victor and Nikki Newman from Y&R popped into my head lol.

I haven't seen the epi either but it seems like the only worthy parts are the Lumi scenes and the vet interaction. Looking forward to that.

I hope Santo/Colleen won't be on the whole summer and every single day of the week. I'm already getting bored of them. I'm not looking forward to this sick love affair at all. Bring on the ending. I want to know how Colleen dies.

And I think that is part of what they are going for. It's that sort of perception that Shawn Sr's father showed in his scenes with Santo. The way he said "I don't like the looks of you" to Santo proves that. It's a romance but one that was disapproved of and not understood. It does give the feel of Romeo and Juliet but with a twisted spin on it. I felt that vibe yesterday and today. As I said yesterday, this is not the feud. This is the origins of what led to the feud. It's the buildup to what happened and what made the feud what it is today. This is exactly what we were told it would be and expected it to be. Now that we got the beginnings of the relationship I believe it will get better. It's kind of like the first two Star wars prequels. No one cared because they were waiting for the creation of Darth Vadar. Same goes here. We are all waiting for how the feud started and how Colleen died and what we are getting now is not what most viewers care about. I am just glad we got all this out of the way now. James and Ali were great and I enjoyed the scenes and all the work and acting put into them but it did drag today. I did like seeing little Shawn Sr involved and I do think they want Colleen to come off as a teenager. The guy playing her father couldn't be more then in his mid 30's at most.

LUMI were great today. Hogan delved into their history and I am glad the scheming and fighting was acknowledged. BD has been great lately and I loved their scenes. Also loved the vets scenes today too. I am glad they all were together and you could feel the love between all the couples.

Shawn Sr and Caroline was good as well. The simple things like Caroline coming down to check on him in a robe and him writing the letter are just pleasing to me. I have a feeling we might be seeing the end of Shawn Sr though. He was hyperventilating in his second to last scene and that goodbye did feel final. I don't know if it will be soon but whoever mentioned Isabella's goodbye was dead on. Plus, the background music for that final scene gave off a epic feel...like something big was coming. I loved the music in that scene.

Tomorrow looks good with a return to normalcy. I enjoyed this but I am ready for a break from the flashbacks so we can get back to the people we know and care about.

I loved today's show and I love this storyline. I don't find the show, nor this storyline boring at all. It's something we haven't seen in a while and Hogan and the other writers are doing a fine job with it.

I love the Ireland flashbacks. Alison Sweeney and James Scott are doing very well with their scenes as Santo DiMera and Colleen Brady. It was nice they showed Pete Brady and a younger Grandpa Shawn. I love that they have casted younger actors to play Stefano and Grandpa Shawn. Tomorrow is goign to be very good. I can't wait. As for Pete, I also thought the actor playing him was rather young. That did bug me a bit.

I wish Colleen's dad wasn't named Pete. One time the priest called him Peter Brady, and I immediately thought of the Brady Bunch. Took me right out of the scene. I know the writers probably think stuff like that is cute, but I don't like it because it distracts me. It's like when movie directors make cameos in their own films--I get so caught up looking for their scene that I lose focus on the movie.

To each their own. To me it's just a somewhat more scandalous Romeo and Juliet type version of The Sound of Music pretty much, but whatever. I didn't and don't expect hardcore Lumi fans to like it. Especially when it could be the show's way of breaking up Lucas and Sami. Everything that Sami discussed with Lucas about them fighting but finding their way back to each other, and all the stuff about schemes and games being played could also be applied to her relationship with E.J. The fate stuff also ties into the fact that Sami and E.J. just happen to look like their star-cross'd ancestors.

ICAM. The longing looks and the intense stares are ROMANCE. I know it's been a long time since the show has given us anything like that so a lot of us are not used to it because since Hogan took over we're expecting someone on this show to get slapped or something to explode or someone to have raunchy sex every other scene, but I like the pacing of Santo-Colleen just fine. One thing I have noticed though is that I think you get a whole different vibe from watching these scenes play out on the show than you do if you watch the Santeen scenes with the commercials and extraneous scenes taken out just kind of flowing together in the dayahead clips that I watch online. It honestly has almost a movie feel to it that way and a lot of the tension in the scenes gets weakened by the editing with all the interruptions on the actual show. Still, a lot better than anything we've gotten in a while. I can't wait to see this all unfold.

    • Has BTG been using flashbacks much? Of course, as a new show there aren't many f/b worthy moments but I think they can get by w/o having to use/recreate the Leslie reveal scene. What other 'soap' tropes have they employed or ignored so far? We've talked about the lack of traditional cliffhangers with lingering camera shots. They have done a couple of fantasy scenes. Has anyone apart from Dana had talk to themselves scenes? Montages?
    • Thank You!!! @rsclassicfanforever and to anyone else who contributed to the vaults over the years. I have dipped in/out and gotten my life watching Y&R early years. I never would had the appreciation for characters like Lorie Brooks if not for the Vaults, so again, Thanks.
    • Another lot of skipped episodes to look forward to when the time comes on Videoland. So annoying. They have skipped so many, especially in  season 15 where they skipped 19 episodes throughout the season. Is it just me or is the vault down? It's like a different error message this time so it's hard to know if it's me this time.
    • thank you for uploading the rest of season 12!!! I hope i can get them soon the links down! Thank you again for posting the B&B classic episodes to revisit!!!!
    • Hmm, okay.  BTW, my only problem with Kai & the surgery story is where is this guy's family? And, another BTW, I think I may have inadvertently added to that rumor from last year about a male descendant of Justus Ward. You see, that is an idea I could really get behind! Like I would pay to see those scenes. And, true, I did hear it ... [sheepish grin]

Yes they can. While rare, its not like soaps in the past havent said F that and used flashbacks of a scene even when a recast has been done. OLTL used to do that
    • Well, I am glad to know that & for it to make sense, so thanks for the info &  the perspective, also. At the end of AMC 1.0, I thought the new young talent was really quite good, but I missed Eden & NuBianca just ... well, I wasn't 100% sold on her & Bianca was so important to me. But then, Tad & Dixie were also important & yep, there's another problem, for me I mean. I'm not your typical AMC fan but I hung in there anyway. I know what you mean because it wasn't as good as it once had been but it was still Agnes's show in Pine Valley. Some of that is a bittersweet nostalgic clinging to the past, I guess. By that time I'd been through so many show cancellations. AW, Santa Barbara, PC, The City, GL, ATWT.

Betsy Snyder, when she was at DAYS was part of the WGA winning writing team before she died, tragically far too young.
    • Yep Edmund and Tad went under cover to infiltrate the... Willow Lake (I think?) old folks community scandal that was exploiting Phoebe, etc.  (Which at one point led to Edmund rescuing Brooke from quicksand--common around Pine Valley I guess

) EDIT maybe I'm wrong.  I found the quicksand scene

Please register in order to view this content

But for the story all I can find is Edmund going undercover as the gigolo "preying" on older women, Eduardo (no one would recognize him with that disguise and name ) so the drag must have been.. a different story?
    • But then he HATES the original Heather Webber (Cher's half sister played her, right?) and we know what happened when Robin would step into the role a year after this.  He does seem pretty spot on about actors who show promise otherwise.  It's interesting he knocks OLTL early on (though I loved all the recently released episodes from this era we got) but does give a lot of credit to the actress playing Cathy despite earlier complaining about her story.  And over all, while quite negative, his various pros and cons on the shows sounds about right with what I know of the shows at this time. This was a July dated issue of the magazine but and I know they date mags a month or two in advance--obviously when he wrote this he didn't know Lovers and Friends was gonna go off the air (in May I think).
