And although he brought back lots of old characters, they were generally written as new characters with no regard to their history. Prime example: Dusty Donovan. Hope mentioned yesterday how they have been through so much since in the last year and mentioned Zack's death. Chelsea also mentioned to her father how she wanted to make up for what she did to Zack several times yesterday and apologizes for it. The show didn't forget it. They acknowledge it alot in dialogue. Hope begged Patrick to not make her go away with him over Christmas since it was her first without Zach and so on... And it's been talked about before and after New Years.
