  1. Anna Marie Horsford also appeared on Search for Tomorrow as a social worker. I think that I read that she was also on Guiding Light.
  2. To me, the show began a downward spiral when Robert Costello departed as the executive producer.
  3. Someone asked about Phoebe Smith. Phoebe (first played by Heidi Vaughan) was a teen-ager when she was introduced. She had a grandmother who was dying in the hospital. The wish of the grandmother was that a nice family would take Phoebe and rear her into a nice adult. I am not sure how the Marceau family met Phoebe's aunt, but, anyway, Martha and Bill Marceau (Teri Keane and the late Mandel Kramer) decdied to adopt Phoebe (who retained the Smith name). Phoebe was a somewhat wild child (probably why the grandmother had worried about her future so much). She loved Martha and Bill, but she had a hard time conforming to their rules. Phoebe's best friend was Liz Hillyer, another somewhat-wild teen-ager who was often influenced by Phoebe. (played by Alberta Grant, who had auditioned for the role of Phoebe) They liked to go to the Teen Center, where the disc jockey was Rick Oliver (the late Keith Charles, in his first daytime soap opera role). Phoebe had a huge crush on Rick. The two of them were awfully flirty with one another. However, Rick was having a actual affair with Laura Hillyer (played by Millette Alexander), who was married to the father of Liz Hillyer, Orin (played by the late Lester Rawlins). Laura disliked being the step-mother of Liz. I remember that she asked Nancy how she had adjusted to marrying a man (Mike) who had a daughter from a previous marriage. Eventually, Martha learned that Phoebe had such a crush on Rick, so she went there to talk to him about leaving Phoebe alone. Later, Laura came to Rick and announced that she was ready for her new life with Rick and also ready to leave Orin. A stunned Rick told her that he was not ready to join her, and a stunned Laura killed him. Martha was placed on trial for the murder of Rick. Eventually, it all came out in court that the murderer was Laura. She ran out of the courtroom, jumped into her car, hastily sped away, and was killed in a crash. Phoebe, who had been stunned by Rick's death and the accusations that Martha had murdered him, resolved to be a better daughter to Bill and Martha. Later, actress Renee Jarett played the role, but I think that during this time, Phoebe was mostly a background character who continued her friendship with Liz and was an influence on Laurie Ann Carr. Phoebe later left the show. She returned in the early 1970s, played by Mimi Kennedy. Ms. Kennedy was replaced by Johanna Leister. I cannot tell you all of the storyline that she had. But, after the deaths of Colin and Keith Whitney (Anthony Call and Bruce Martin) , she caught the eye of Kevin Jameson (Richard Shoberg and John Driver). Phoebe, by this time, was studying to be a doctor. I don't think that Geraldine(Lois Kibbe) liked Phoebe because of her past. Geraldine also would not like any female who Kevin would like because she wanted to keep Kevin to herself. Kevin and Phoebe did eventually marry. Dr. Quentin Henderson (Michael Stroka) was attracted to her and also worked with her professionally. She was murdered by poisoning by Dr. Clay Jordan (Niles McMaster). NOTE: I have since found online that there was a woman named Victoria Dana (played by Joanna Roos) who was a con woman who tried to bilk John Barnes (Barry Newman) out of some money. As I was only a child at the time who attended school, I do not remember this too well. I now remember the Phoebe was in a bed in the hospital for quite a while. Phoebe and Victoria probably accused John of hitting Phoebe in a car accident. This is probably how Martha and Bill met her - in investigating the accident. So, the part about her grandmother above may not be true. I must say that the death scene of Phoebe was played by Johanna Leister. It was one of the most accurate portrayals of someone who had been poisoned that I had ever seen! Ms. Leister played the role well. She never played a contract role on another soap opera, but she had a recurring role as the Llanview OB/GYN on One Life to Live. She played for role for several years, as my memory serves me.
  4. Yes! Don't you feel that if As the World Turns had premiered years later than its 1956 premiere, that the characters of Jim and Claire Lowell would have been multi-milionaires and that Edith Hughes would have been portrayed as a money-hungry golddigger?
  5. Happy Birthday (May 1) to Penny! I am sure that Bob has sent her flowers since Chris is not able to do so.
  6. Heather McRae was also on One Life to Live. I may have overlooked her name, but Valerie Harper is said to have been on The Doctors.
  7. The perfect storyline for the character of Ellen would have been that when the character played by Nicolas Coster played (his second character) would have been in a romantic triangle with Ellen and Lisa. With that, much of the Lisa-Ellen longtime fued could have been mentioned and revived. Betsy von Furstenburg (Lisa #3) has passed away.
  8. I heard that NBC kept videotapes and film in a warehouse that was later destroyed by fire. Most of the game shows, much of the Tonight Show, and some of the primetime shows (such as Mr. Peepers) were all destroyed. What was there was probably also destroyed.
  9. I think that Jacqeline Courtney was only shown on one episode of Loving. The show made a huge mistake in not developing the character and making her a regular on the show. Her appearance, alas, came at the end of a concluding storyline.
  10. I am so glad to see the photograph of Don Wallace! He was a director/writer of The Edge of Night during the early years, From These Roots, and One Life to Live. He was a writer for One Life to Live and Loving, and the executive producer of The Best of Everything and the serial Return to Peyton Place. I had not known that he directed Search for Tomorrow.
  11. According to an article posted elsewhere, the late actress Bibi Besch appeared on both The Guiding Light and The Doctors before being on The Secret Storm.
  12. Ed Kemmer had appeared on The Edge of Night as Malcolm Thomas earlier, and Bibi Besch was to appeared on The Edge of Night as Susan Forbes #2 later.
  13. Did Gerald Gordon and his wife remain married until his death?
  14. I found it interesting that Van Johnson and Joan Fontaine both appeared. Both of them later appeared on Ryan's Hope - Mr. Johnson as himself and Ms. Fontaine as a character named Paige. Daniel Keys also appeared on Dark Shadows as the caretaker of Eagle Hill Cemetary.
  15. I am sure that you know this, but Patricia Harty starred primetime shows Occasional Wife on NBC and Blondie on CBS.
  16. In addition to Tina's involvement with David Vickers (who was thought to be her brother) and Richard (who was her first cousin), Tina also dated Danny Woleck, her nephew. This was before either she or the audience knew that she was related to the Lord family.
  17. Ellen was written of the show three times - in the 1960s (David remained, but Ellen was never at home), in the 1970s (a little prior to the expansion to a full hour) and then later when she was said to have left town to live in Atlanta.
  18. Two other connections between A Flame in the Wind/A Time for Us and Love Is a Many Splendored Thing: Leslie Charleson and Terry Logan were both featured in the cast.
  19. I really liked Steve and Liz!
  20. On the CBS schedule, when did For Better or For Worse air? What show preceeded it everyday? Also, what does U. S. C. stand for?
  21. Who is the lady wearing the green dress?
  22. I thought that the show was eventually planning to make Gloria and Tad the show major family. I believe that changed when Dixie returned to the show.
  23. She was the final actress cast in the role of Cathy. Cathy's last storyline was her engagement to Dr. Larry Woleck.
  24. I think Susan Harney was a WONDERFUL replacement for Jacqueline Courtney, if a replacement was necessary. I agree that the character of Alice would have remained on the show if Ms. Courtney had not left. That the show kept trying replacement after replacement, I think, reinforces that. And, I think that Mr. Lemay did not want to give the character of Alice much good material.
  25. I read online (probably above) a question from a poster who wondered if Jacqueline Courtney and Virginia Dwyer remained close after their depatures from Another World. I am wondering if the producers of One Life to Live considered the hiring of Ms. Dwyer as Helene Ashley, the mother of the two characters that were played by Ms. Courtney on that show. Augusta Dabney played the role, but I would think that Ms. Courtney would have suggested to the actress the role to Ms. Dwyer when it was being cast or would have suggested Ms. Dwyer to the producers as a way to get some publicity in the press. Or, had Ms. Dwyer decided to quietly retire from acting by this time?
