Meanwhile in late 82 Jack seems sincere when he tells the family he has accepted John's marriage To Jill.'If the old man is happy,then who am I to question that'? Ashley,Jack and Patty toast to John and Jill,newlyweds back from their honeymoon. Jill breathes a sigh of relief as all her fears are allayed. Then Jack mentions that package that arrived from Mrs Chancellor. Jack proposes to John they start a new line endorsed by renowned designer Julia Newman.John agrees and Jack makes plans to head to Paris with a propsal for Ms Newman. At the office, Diane stops by to pressure Jack into making her lead model,as promised. To distract her,Jack proposes a trip to Paris. Julia isn't sold on the idea and tells Jack they'll have to meet again,but she's flying to the States tomorrow. Diane is furious Jack is shortening their trip and threatens to expose their relationship. She's sure Jack will get moving on his promise. Stuart demands to know from Robert how he will handle the situation with Claire and Leslie.Robert assures Stu that Les is his #1 priority. At home, Angela says what Claire needs is the love of her husband, A worried Claire tells Robert she's frightened of slipping back to her catatonic state.Robert reassures her and spends the night in her room (in a chair) Cindy tells Paul that Pam is on to him and will expose him to Pete Walker.Pam goes to see Pete but he kicks her out without listening. paul meets with Commander Lewis to discuss strategy. Pleased with Jack's progress with Julia,John reminds him not to neglect Patty.Suspecting Carl is behind this he tells Patty's dad to butt out and threatens to cut him off from his daughter. Jacj strings Diane along as he woos Julia into signing with Jabot.When Julia still hesitates John states that as much as they want Julia, they can and will find someone else. From my recollections,Deborah played it well. There was always that insecurity there that stopped her getting close to the Abbott sisters plus Ashley's attitude was always a liitle distrustful of Jill. Again,my memory is hazy but perhaps there wasn't a lot of interactions b/w Jill and Traci.Traci was in her own story and Jill wasn't involved.Jill was more in the John/Jack/Ashley sphere. One nice memory I have was Liz bonding with Traci.I could have seen Traci turning to Liz for advice and support but that connection was never cemented.

It seems that Jill was happy to have Greg and Nikki marry in the Brooks home ,but maybe this was more to do with establishing herself as lady of the manor than any consideration for Nikki.Snapper and Liz are shown as havinh reservations about Nikki but not Jill.Maybe she was too wrapped up in her own problems and that angle wasn't fully explored. With Lance going to Santa Domingo,it seems that they played it that Lance was more than willing to go and Lucas was a bit more hesitant.I think the underlying theme here was that Lucas was out of his depth running the business whereas Lance was much more confident with dealing with the precarious situation. In the months to follow the Jill/Derek/Kay/Suzanne story got more convoluted and the motives seemed muddy. Then when Brenda left and the show went to an hour,Jill was out of the equation and the whole intrigue at Chancellor story took hold. Interesting that Paul/Nikki was still being played, giving Bill another possible angle to explore.

Summary of SOD synopsis Nov 1979 (maybe Sept onscreen?) Lance tells Lucas he will work for Prentiss and Lucas offers war torn Santa Domingo,where Prentiss Industriees is hurting. Lance accepts. Lorie is pleased that the brothers are working towards reconciling but when Lucas lets her know where Lance is headed, she turns on him.To himself,Lucas justifies that he just wants his wife ans son without complications. Lorie tells Leslie where Lance has gone.Les tries to make contact and is horrified that the phone lines are down.Witnessing Leslie's reaction,Lorie is sure that Leslie is in love with Lance. Brock is mourning Kay when she reveals herself, leaving Brock stunned.Kay explains she wants to test Derek's fidelity and pay back Suzanne. Suzanne almost seduces Derek,but she begins to hear voices and Derek thinks she is drunk. So Derek visits Jill and professes his love. Jill is tempted but insists to Derek she wants to make a go of her marriage to Stu. At Lorie's urging,Snapper speaks to Jill about ending her marriage. Jill asks Stu to use the house for Greg and Nikki's marriage but he refuses as it would be awkward for Liz.But Liz insists that it would be OK as Greg and Nikki deserve the best for the day,leaving Stu full of admiration for Liz's selflessness. Casey questions Nikki as to whether she and Greg have discussed work, kids etc.Nikki is unable to answer but Greg allays her fears saying they will deal with these issues together when the time comes. Chris is frustrated by not being pregnant. Liz and Snapper agree to give flighty Nikki a chance. Lorie is frantic that Lance has been killed. Paul visits Nikki to tell her that he wasn't just using her-he loved her. Nikki admits that she loved him too. They share a passionate goodbye kiss, which leaves Nikki uncertain as to whether she's ready to settle down. Leslie too turns on Lucas. Stu begs Jill to give up on this marriage. Brock agrees to help Kay by going to Derek and telling him it's time to move on and find another woman. Kay has realized her marriage to Derek is over but she can help Liz by having Jill end her marriage to Stu. Lucas defends himself by telling Les that Lance willingly went to Santa Domingo. Leslie isn't totally buying it.Lucas pleads with her to make their marriage work.Les agrees to stay but sleep in the guest room. Greg and Nikki are married. Jill tells Derek her marriage to Stu is not filling all her needs.Will Derek marry her immediately? Suzanne overhears and is seething.Before Derek can give Jill an answer, she phones Derek with a fake emergency at the salon. Suzanne then enters and lets Jill know she and Derek are planning to be married.A devastated Jill leaves. When Derek returns ,Suzanne lies that Jill made a call and hurried out, saying she didn't want Derek to contact her.Derek is confused as to what Jill is up yo. OK,Jill tells Stu.She will leave the marriage right away with a good cash settlement.Stu agrees as he says he wants Jill and Phillip to be secure. He no longer holds Jill in contempt.Jill explains that as Derek is marrying Suzanne, she needs the money to survive. Lance arrives home safely and assures Lorie that Lucas did not demand he go,it was his own idea.Lorie realizes both she and Les owe Lucas an apology. The maestro tells Leslie in a roundabout way that Lucas was in Australia and caught Lance and Leslie together.Will Les reconsider her feelings to Lucas and try to save her marriage?

Susan Seaforth Hayes -went to Y&R after Days and Bill considered her for Stephanie on B&B

Laura of the Reilly era was more of a plot point than a continuation of the Bell era Laura and so was definitely less complex than Lorie.. Bill Bell must have liked Peter Brown as he used him on Days,Y&R and B&B. That was true of many actors that started on Days under Bell and showed up on the other shows.

Interesting to watch these in hindsight. Some of the scenes eg Russ and Kit were draggy. And Jamie and Rick looked so skinny (the baggy clothes and shaggy hair doesn't help) No way would today's leading men get away with bodies like those. And the same for some of the women,who were a little lacking 'upstairs' by today's standards. Were Rachel's clothes awful even back then? Blaine really stood out- Laura Malone really had something. L Virginia Browne had some good ideas but things like Jamie/Marianne and Blaine/Joey seem forced. Wasn't this the 2nd time Jamie came home married to a woman Rachel hated?

It's hard to judge in retrospect but I would add Jo and Sam on SFT as they went through a lot to be together (ultimately never making it. And the beginnings of Travis and Liza predated Luke and Laura and brought a lot of attention.

Interesting to compare the SOD summary with the newspaper summary from the same weeks.Some plot points are mentioned in one but not the other. Summary of SOD synopsis from July 29th 1979.This would have been onscreen a few months earlier.The SOD synopsis were quite detailed in those days. Leslie,Lucsas and Vanessa are back in Genoa City. Lance welcomes Vanessa alone as Lucas and Leslie have gone to show Stu his first grandchild. Lance is looking forward to meeting his nephew and Vanessa wonders to herself if Lance will realize he's looking at his own son. Stu tells Greg he's going to see Liz that his marriage to Jill will be annulled and that he only married Jill as she was pregnant. Meanshile Jill is speaking to her attorney in an attempt to stop the divorce. Stu plans to get an annullment claiming she tricked him into marriage with lies of a pregnancy.Jill says she didn't trick Stu – she really believed she was pregnant and had a spontaneous miscarriage,but has no doctor's proof. Hew lawyer responds that the burden of proof is on Stuto prove she committed fraud. He can't force her out of the house and they can force him to continue to provide support until the court makes a ruling. Stu tells Liz the whole story and she understands and forgives....they kiss. Jill is pleased to hear that Stu will have to testify he slept with Jill before their marriage as she believes he will never reveal t his daughters he had a one night stand. Greg is at the Allegro where Nikki is working. She is angry he was a no show for their date.Greg says her father told him she was sick. Nikki can't believe he would do that so Greg challenges her to call him. Nikki is unable to reach him. Later when she confronts him, Nick admits he didn't trust Greg,He says he was only trying to be a good dad, but messed up. Nikki forgives him. Casey tells Brock she has had a breakthrough regarding her feelings for her dad. She has let go of her hatred and believes he is a different man today. But Nick is drinking again and vows Casey and Nikki will always be his little girls. . .and his alone. Suzanne smugly watches Kay sipping her drugged tea. Soon it will be easy to get Kay to stab Liz. But in her drugged state a confused Kay plunges the letter opener into Suzanne by mistake. Liz calls an ambulance and tells Casey and Brock it was an accident. Kay is in deep shock. Jill tells Derek that her marriage is in trouble and they need to think about getting back together. Stu gathers his daughters together and tells them he made a huge mistake in marrying Jill but he is taking steps to rectify the situation. Jill will be leaving shortly. The Brooks girls are delighted by the news. Jill is listening in and later tells Stu he isn't revealing the whole story to his daughters or Liz – the fact that they has a one night stand. Keeping that a secret will hinder his chances of an annullment. Derek is shocked when Brock tells him what Kay has done and tearfully agrees to have her committed. Casey tells Brock Suzanne sustained minor injuries and will be released soon. Jill tells Stu he is the one who will need to leave the house-their marital home. Stu is furious with Jill's attitude. Nikki finds Nick drunk and is ashamed of herself for believing he's changed. She goes to Greg and asks they give things another try. Greg agrees and the make a date at the Allegro. Vanessa tells Lucas she will ask for Lance's resignation today. Lucas responds that he now wants nothing to do with this. Lance is annoyed when Lucas tells him he won't be joining the business. Lance says Lucas is still an immature child. That reaction has Lucas going back to Vanessa with a change of heart. Derek is told that Kay may take years of intensive therapy to recover. Vanessa tells Lance that as of today he is out of Prentiss Industries and she and Lucas are now majority stockholders so he can't fight the move. Lance is in shock. Nick pretends to accept Greg but seethes to see him kissing Nikki. Lucas tells Les he is going to join the business and he's doing it for Leslie and Brooks. Lorie is stunned when Lance tells him of Lucas' betrayal. Suzanne visits Kay with a box of drugged chocolates to ensure she never recovers. Lorie realizes Vanessa plotted this as revenge against her. Lance says they will move forward, beginning with a romantic world tour. Stu offers Jill $25,000 but her lawyer Mr Price says he may be able to offer a lot more. He tells Jill not to have such discussions without lawyers present. Lorie rails against Leslie for what she and Lucas have done to Lance. Les is blindsided, having no idea what has been going on. Les blames Vanessa for manipulating Lucas and Lorie agrees. Leslie tells Lorie she'll get Lucas to undo all of this and not let Vanessa manipulate them. 23rd – 27th April, 1979 (Monday 30th April – Toledo Blade) When Jill refuses to agree to a divorce, Stuart seeks and annulment. Leslie, Lucas and baby Brooks arrive in Genoa City. Vanessa keeps telling Lorie how much the baby resembles Lance. Feariong Liz is going to tell Derek about her emotional problems, Kay is about to attack her with a knife, but the life of the unsuspecting Liz is saved when she turns away to answer the phone. Upset that Nikki has agreed to go out with Greg, Nick tells Greg she has broken the date, then comforts Nikki when she thinks she has been stood up. 30th April – 7th – 11th May, 1979 (Monday 14th May – Toledo Blade) Snapper is displeased to discover Greg is dating Nikki. When Nick sees Greg and Nikki kissing, he fumes and thinks to himself that Nikki is his and nobody else’s; giving Nikki a goodnight kiss he is more than fatherly. Lance realizes how his brother must still hate him when Lucas, prodded by Vanessa, decides to take over Prentiss Industries. Released from the hospital, Suzanne stops by to see Kay on her way to the mansion, leaves behind a box of chocolates into which she injected a substance. 14th – 18th May, 1979 (Monday 21st May – Toledo Blade) Jill turns down Stuart’s offer of $25,000 for an uncontested annulment when Derek makes it clear he is going to stay with Kay. Stuart tells Lorie he can fight for the annulment but that means letting everyone know Jill said she was pregnant before they married. Leslie is aghast at Lucas’ plan to take Prentiss from Lance. Lucas finally admits he’s motivated by more than a desire to take care of Leslie and baby Brooks – he also wants revenge against Lance. Snapper and Casey argue over his opposition to Nikki’s dating Greg. Nikki plans to tell Greg about her promiscuous past.

Stu plans to get an annullment claiming she tricked him into marriage with lies of a pregnancy.Jill says she didn't trick Stu – she really believed she was pregnant and had a spontaneous miscarriage,but has no doctor's proof. Hew lawyer responds that the burden of proof is on Stuto prove she committed fraud. He can't force her out of the house and they can force him to continue to provide support until the court makes a ruling. Stu tells Liz the whole story and she understands and forgives....they kiss. Jill is pleased to hear that Stu will have to testify he slept with Jill before their marriage as she believes he will never reveal t his daughters he had a one night stand. Greg is at the Allegro where Nikki is working. She is angry he was a no show for their date.Greg says her father told him she was sick. Nikki can't believe he would do that so Greg challenges her to call him. Nikki is unable to reach him. Later when she confronts him, Nick admits he didn't trust Greg,He says he was only trying to be a good dad, but messed up. Nikki forgives him. Casey tells Brock she has had a breakthrough regarding her feelings for her dad. She has let go of her hatred and believes he is a different man today. But Nick is drinking again and vows Casey and Nikki will always be his little girls. . .and his alone. Suzanne smugly watches Kay sipping her drugged tea. Soon it will be easy to get Kay to stab Liz. But in her drugged state a confused Kay plunges the letter opener into Suzanne by mistake. Liz calls an ambulance and tells Casey and Brock it was an accident. Kay is in deep shock. Jill tells Derek that her marriage is in trouble and they need to think about getting back together. Stu gathers his daughters together and tells them he made a huge mistake in marrying Jill but he is taking steps to rectify the situation. Jill will be leaving shortly. The Brooks girls are delighted by the news. Jill is listening in and later tells Stu he isn't revealing the whole story to his daughters or Liz – the fact that they has a one night stand. Keeping that a secret will hinder his chances of an annullment. Derek is shocked when Brock tells him what Kay has done and tearfully agrees to have her committed. Casey tells Brock Suzanne sustained minor injuries and will be released soon. Jill tells Stu he is the one who will need to leave the house-their marital home. Stu is furious with Jill's attitude. Nikki finds Nick drunk and is ashamed of herself for believing he's changed. She goes to Greg and asks they give things another try. Greg agrees and the make a date at the Allegro. Vanessa tells Lucas she will ask for Lance's resignation today. Lucas responds that he now wants nothing to do with this. Lance is annoyed when Lucas tells him he won't be joining the business. Lance says Lucas is still an immature child. That reaction has Lucas going back to Vanessa with a change of heart. Derek is told that Kay may take years of intensive therapy to recover. Vanessa tells Lance that as of today he is out of Prentiss Industries and she and Lucas are now majority stockholders so he can't fight the move. Lance is in shock. Nick pretends to accept Greg but seethes to see him kissing Nikki. Lucas tells Les he is going to join the business and he's doing it for Leslie and Brooks. Lorie is stunned when Lance tells him of Lucas' betrayal. Suzanne visits Kay with a box of drugged chocolates to ensure she never recovers. Lorie realizes Vanessa plotted this as revenge against her. Lance says they will move forward, beginning with a romantic world tour. Stu offers Jill $25,000 but her lawyer Mr Price says he may be able to offer a lot more. He tells Jill not to have such discussions without lawyers present. Lorie rails against Leslie for what she and Lucas have done to Lance. Les is blindsided, having no idea what has been going on. Les blames Vanessa for manipulating Lucas and Lorie agrees. Leslie tells Lorie she'll get Lucas to undo all of this and not let Vanessa manipulate them.

John McCook's Lance always came off as a little stodgy to me , so it was good to see him break loose. First disco dancing, now belly dancing. . . I wonder if JLB embraced these scenes or dreaded them? Wouldn't it be cool to re-unite those two and have them talk about their memories of those scenes and their stories on Y&R?

Oct 77 SOD synopsis concerning Leslie,Lorie etc Lorie picks up the newspaper. On the front page there’s a huge headline and lengthy report about a major Hong Kong hotel fire. There’s also a photo of one of the fire’s victims: a badly burned young man. Lorie’s heart quickens and skips a beat. She runs and grabs the Prentiss family album. She pulls out a picture of Lucas, Lance’s younger – and long missing – brother. Could it be? Could the man in the photo be Lucas? She shows the photo to Lance and Vanessa. They don’t see the resemblance – but that in no way squelches her suspicions. When Lorie feels she’s right; she feels she’s right. She goes to see her father, the editor of the newspaper. She tells Stu of her suspicions and asks him to get the original photo. Stu tells his daughter he feels she’s getting her hopes up for nothing, but he’ll help her get the photo anyway. Lorie then points out that the man in the photo seems to have a tattoo like the one Lucas has. She’ll be able to tell for sure once she gets the original photo. Leslie’s divorce from Brad is going to be final in about a week. Brock realizes this and tells Leslie what’s on his mind and in his heart. Tenderly he touches her face and says, “Leslie, I love you.” Leslie tells Brock she isn’t ready for an involvement, but when she is he could definitely be the man. The doctor starts to remove the bandages. Anxiously observing this procedure is beautiful R.N., Cynthia Harris. Her heart leaps to her throat as she hears Brad jubilantly should, “I can see!” Cynthia’s joy is genuine…but tainted. She loves the man. His regaining his sight means she has lost him. He’ll now be returning to his wife Leslie. Before returning to Genoa City, Cynthia tells Brad of her love. Brad tells Cynthia she’s a sensitive, caring woman and he’s glad she was there when he needed someone. Will Cynthia follow Brad’s doctor’s request and tell Leslie? She enters The Allegro prepared to do just that, but Leslie’s words to her put a quick end to this dreaded deed. Leslie tells Cynthia her divorce from Brad will be final the next day. Cynthia had no idea Brad was divorcing Leslie. It will now be to her advantage not to say a word…and she doesn’t. Cynthia prays her decision will buy her Brad’s love. Vanessa overhears Lorie telling an unidentified person on the telephone that she has to get away for a while, without telling Lance exactly where she’s headed. Vanessa assumes Lorie is cheating on Lance. She plots revenge. She calls a certain Mr. Andrews and asks him how she would go about making a book a bestseller. The success of “In Her Sister’s Shadow” is certain to destroy Lorie’s very happy existence. Vanessa should only know it’s the wrong course of action. The person Lorie was talking to was her father, and the person she plans to see is the man in the photo. She got the original photo, but Lorie still isn’t sure the man is Lucas. Rather than disappoint Lance or Vanessa, Lorie is flying to Hong Kong to make certain of the man’s identity. Her subterfuge is being done in the name of love; not adultery. The nurse leaves, and Lorie slowly enters the man’s hospital room. The young bearded gent opens his eyes. The sight of Lorie’s sexy form lifts is spirits to the skies. He immediately starts flirting with her. Lorie returns the banter, anxious to create an open mood. She has to find out if this man is Lucas. Lorie probes, but the man doesn’t want to talk. He was admitted to the hospital as a John Doe and that’ show he wants to remain. He doesn’t even blink when Lorie says her full name: Lorie Prentiss. He then asks Lorie why exactly she is looking for this Lucas character. Lorie tells him the sad story. She says many years ago Lucas started a fire which left his mother’s face badly scarred and sentenced her a life being a veil. He felt guilty and ran away from home…and has kept running all these years. The reason why she is now so anxious to find Lucas is that she wants to tell him he’s his mother’s only hope. This woman is her mother-in-law, Vanessa Prentiss, and she cares very deeply for her – despite the fact that the woman doesn’t return her affection. Vanessa can now have plastic surgery, but she’ll only do it for Lucas. She wants to relieve him of his guilt. The man still won’t admit he’s Lucas, and Lorie was all set to believe him until the nurse removes the bandage from his arm. It was then that Lorie saw the tattoo! The skull and crossbones with the name “Luke” inscribed underneath. Lorie is now 100% positive that she found her brother-in-law. Lucas is not at all glad to have been found. Lorie leaves the room and he utters a loud “Damn” to the heavens.

Brett Porter also subbed for Terry Lester as Jack on Y&R. Robbwolf's summary of the Kendalls highlights SFT's problems-focussing on a new family,recasts,change in story direction and then all dropped.No wonder viewers were disenchanted.

That ep demonstrated what was wrong with Search at the time - apart from Liza,Sunny Wendy and Martin,everyone else was knew= part of the revolving door of characters that came and went in the 80's. Will Patton was recurring and when he wouldn't commit,Kentucky was dropped. Of course, the yearly producer and writer changes didn't help. The thing is despite all the changes SFT had a viable core Best friends Jo and Stu as matriach/patriach. Jo's daughter Patti and her two kids Tracey and Chris.Her ward Bruce and his daughter Tori. Stu's daughter Janet ,son Tom and grandkids Liza,Gary and Danny. Build the show around these characters.

The disco would have been a set. John Conboy(the Ross Hunter of daytime) was producing remember.A few years later when Leslie took Brooks to the circus,Y&R built an entire circus set in the studio. I wonder whose idea this was as it doesn't seem a very Bill Bell notion.Around the same time ATWT had a disco so maybe CBS saw it as a way to hook those young 'uns. . .

Can anyone fill in the details surrounding the shooting? What drove Vanessa to take this drastic step? Why did Lorie call upon Snapper and not call an ambulance? Did Lorie take responsibility and if so,why? How did Vanessa get away with this?

Vanessa arranged for Lorie's book that detailed Leslie's breakdown to be released and also schemed to have Lorie discover that Leslie was pregnant with Lance's child.

'Mother Prentiss' such a Bill Bell line. Great to see Vanessa and Lorie playing nice for Lance.And rather than making them out and out enemies,Lorie also wanted to befriend Vanessa,so there was another level to their animosity. Loved JLB's enunciation.

i think Danfling was referring to Schnetzer who played Marcello on OLTL.

That's great. Poor Lorie.... Those music cues were so much a part of Y&R in those days.They wormed their way into your consciousness. Interesting that in the flasback,Jennifer was shown only from the back.Was that actually Dorothy Green or was there a double for some reason? Or was it just a directing choice to focus completely on Lorie? Looking forward to more treasures.

I believe the actor playing Jeff was John Tripp. On the one hand AMC seem to realise the value of continuing the core by having Jeff around but then were half hearted in their committment to the character. Like a lot of other leading men on shows (Russ Matthews,Paul Martin,Linc & Chuck Tyler,Don Hughes) TPTB didn't give them children to maintain their involvement or keep the families onscreen. Also,Peter Bergman was originally intended to be Jeff Martin but the character evolved into Cliff Warner.So possibly,Jeff would have beenmore prominent throughout the 80's.
