The 1981 episode was AMAZING. Didn't really care for Victor & Nikki, but Vanessa Prentiss was perfection. She was fascinating and so scary! I also loved the Barbara story. It's so sad that the show lost Lori, it is rather obvious that Y&R (and Edward Scott) were more interested in making Nikki the leading lady. Can you imagine Lori instead of Nikki as Mrs. Newman?  Having an affair with Jack, hating Ashley, giving birth to Victor's children?

It was posted here before that Bill Bell's original plan wasn't to pair Victor and Nikki, but he changed their story when MTS became pregnant in real life. Perhaps BB's original plan was Victor/Lorie. MTS and Ed Scott weren't together until about 1984 I think; they were married in the fall of 1985.

Watching the 1987 episode. The editing is really bad, the episode doesn't really flow together. What a treat it is to see the late great Terry Lester. If I remember correctly, the last time Y&R aired a classic episode w/ TL was Christmas Day 1998 when they reaired the episode from December 23, 1988. I'm skipping the Cricket scenes. The Victor/Nikki scenes I feel like I've seen some of them online. MTS and ED were rocking that big ass 1980s hair 😂 EB was 46 here and he looks better than he did in the 1981 episode. Consider this, JM is 46 now and maybe it's late 1980s vs. 2020 styling but holy difference 🤣

Can't wait for 1990 tomorrow, even though it's an episode I remember watching when it originally aired.

  2. Just watched the 1981 episode. Whoa, Vanessa is scary. If I saw her storyline live, I would probably have nightmares 😂 Bill Bell used elements of Vanessa for Stephanie but Stephanie as Bill Bell wrote her was never that scary.

Victor pretending to be the man servant 🤣 Victor and Nikki were so cute in this episode. Funny that Nikki didn't make a comment that Mr. Victor the decorator/man servant has a similar name to Victor Newman. EB was 40 and MTS was 25 in this episode. The age difference is quite apparent here, maybe that's due to early 1980s styling.

Most Intriguing Couple - Roger & Holly on Guiding Light

It was so wrong yet so right to root for Roger and Holly. Even though they weren't together, there were always signs of something brewing between them. They really were the anti-supercouple.

Best New Character - Sally Spectra on The Bold & The Beautiful

Sally's arrival was the turning point for B&B. There was nobody else like her on daytime. She breathed new life into that show.

    Most Over-Exposed Heroine - Cricket on Y&R

Oh hells yes this got called out. Cricket really ate Y&R in the late 1980s. When I've watched late 1980s Y&R episodes online, I skip all the Cricket scenes  I'm planning to do the same when the 1987 episode airs Tuesday.

With DAYS, reading it about, the show starting off leaning more towards a Bell soap (seeing as Bill wrote the show many years), and then later started to waffle more ABC type dramas with more adventure.

I wasn't alive during the Bill Bell era of Days but it is interesting as to how it began and how it would be best known as the supercouple/sci fi show, at least to daytime drama viewers of my generation anyway. I haven't found much online about Bill Bell's Days but I wonder if he reused any of his Days stories during Y&R's early years like he reused his early Y&R stories during B&B's early years.

I remember too Eric and Stephanie getting along too. And then out of the blue, the beginnings of Eric and Brooke. To this day, I never understood it  and I never liked Eric and Brooke.

Well Bill Bell did reuse the Jill/Phillip and Jill/Stuart storylines for Brooke/Eric. I also think he changed Brooke's storyline because KKL became pregnant in real life.

I loved Y&R from 1999 until 2004... or maybe even 2005... when did LML come on? That's when [!@#$%^&*] fell apart for me.

For me, Y&R was in transition mode in 1998-99 and started to pick up a bit in 2000 with the Glo by Jabot crew and Tricia’s unraveling. It never really recaptured what it was in the early '90s, which was exquisite.

While 1999-2005 had some good storylines, signs of tanking were showing. 2006 was the year I'd say Y&R entered the tank.

Geez, it’s funny to think while Alice Horton was baking doughnuts, both Bert Bauer and Nancy Hughes serving up a nice cup of hot coffee and Ada passing on her wisdom their peers Vanessa, Katherine, and Alison Bancroft at Y&R were cold and harsh and coming up with really devious wicked schemes.

Bill Bell liked the messy matriarchs LOL.

As of now, France is at June 20, 2017, Belgium is at July 6, 2017, and Switzerland is at July 11, 2017.

One of the French language channels in Canada is at June 18, 2012. Any Canadians here watching the French episodes in addition to the Global day-ahead episodes?

Was Bradley Bell the sole head writer at this time at B&B?  People often say that the mid 90s was good period for B&B, comes as a shock that Y&R had simultaneously dipped in quality at this time.

Bradley Bell took over B&B sometime in 1993 I think.

Hmm what about Ryan falling for a 18 year old?

I don't think Tricia was 18. I'm pretty sure the character was introduced as a college student close to graduation, so maybe 21 or 22.

First time I ever see KT Stevens and Vanessa I think. What a legendary character !

Episode over : Vanessa was clearly the highlight of the episode. There is such a gothic tone around her and the set is very dark lighted. She is frightening. Loved it !

Bill Bell used elements of Vanessa/Lance/Lucas for Stephanie/Ridge/Thorne and the Lance/Lucas/Leslie/Lorie quadrangle for the Ridge/Thorne/Caroline/Brooke quadrangle. Oddly enough John McCook played son to Vanessa and husband to Stephanie; I know John McCook left Y&R in 1980 so the 1981 episode will have the recast Lance. From what I've read about Vanessa, she's probably the scariest of Bill Bell's wealthy matriarchs (Jennifer, Katherine, Vanessa, Dina, Stephanie).

I'm sorry GL got to the state it was in by its last decade (and going back further, since 1993)

In a way, I'm relieved I stopped watching live as of Fall 1992. It would have been painful to witness the destruction as it unfolded. Speaking of which, this month marks 25 years since JFP left as EP.

watching the end of today's classic episode. WAIIITTTTT, Nicky and Paul were together???!!! Yet another example of EWWWWWW!!!!!

Nikki and Paul were originally together in 1978/1979 and reunited briefly in 2008 to 2009. I don't count the rewrite of the Summer 1980 cult storyline that resulted in Nikki and Paul having Dylan.

When I first started watching Y&R in '99 I would hit up message boards and people could not stop bringing up Terry Lester and Brenda Dickson and all I could think was "Can they shut up about these people? It's been forever. Peter Bergman and Jess Walton are great!". It had only been a decade but I was a kid, what do I know?

But here we are, 17 (!) years after losing Heather Tom and I can't shut up about how bad Amelia Heinle is.

I still miss Terry Lester to this day but I prefer Jess Walton to Brenda Dickson. I also can't believe that Amelia Heinle has played Victoria the longest of all the actresses in that role, and that by this fall Heather Tom will have played Katie just as long as she played Victoria (13 years).

Sharon being both Victor and Jack's ex-wife is disgusting. I wasn't watching when she married Victor. Nick should consider that unforgivable. WHY did she marry Victor? Was it an actual marriage? Did they *shudder* have sex?

Victor and Sharon were never shown in bed together. There was one scene where they held hands and walked upstairs together so the bedroom activities were implied.

Victor and Jack have both been with Nikki, Leanna, Diane, Sharon, Genevieve.

  15. You didn't mention this in your stats, but as of this past Monday (April 27), Days is the third longest running daytime drama on US network television. The 10 longest running daytime dramas on US network television are now Guiding Light, General Hospital, Days, As the World Turns, Y&R, One Life to Live, All My Children, Search for Tomorrow (counting both CBS years and NBC years), Another World, B&B.
