    Let's just say it: coke.

We all know Y&R has issues BTS, but I don't think rampant substance abuse was one of them. I figure Bill Bell probably heard about what was going on BTS at ABC/P&G during the 1980s and wasn't going to allow that at his shows. BB strikes me as the type that would have a zero tolerance policy at his shows. Remember JC went to rehab in the 1980s and it was also rumored BB fired B&B's first Thorne due to substance abuse.

On Monday, May 4, Taylor Hayes (Hunter Tylo) desperately attempts to escape from Prince Omar (Kabir Bedi) to let Ridge (Thorsten Kaye) know that she’s alive, while Ridge and Brooke (Lang) have their epic first wedding in front of friends… and foes on the beautiful beach in Point Dume, Calif. The episode originally aired Sept. 30, 1994.

This I remember being rebroadcast either New Year's Eve 2001 or New Year's Day 2002. Taylor the Desert Princess was not one of B&B's finest half hours; that story was cheesy and somewhat offensive, and it would not work today. Side note, Prince Omar's henchman Ahmed was played by Brian George aka Babu Bhatt (Seinfeld)/Dr. V.M. Koothrappali (Big Bang Theory).

On Wednesday, May 6, Katie (Tom), the only woman to have ever stolen Dollar Bill's (Diamont) heart, walks down the aisle to become Mrs. William Spencer, Jr., with her sisters at her side, at the San Fernando Valley home where she was raised. Legendary CBS star Patrick Duffy (“Dallas”) guest stars as Katie’s father, Stephen Logan. The episode originally aired Nov. 13, 2009.

I think this was the episode where B&B used one of Heather Tom's early Y&R episodes as a teenage Katie flashback.

On Thursday, May 7, Eric Forrester (McCook) and Brooke Logan (Lang) say “I Do” as Eric’s ex-wife, Stephanie (Susan Flannery), and Brooke’s true love, Ridge (Kaye), watch without objection. Eric then takes Brooke on a romantic and surprise honeymoon in a magnificent hot-air balloon in Palm Springs, Calif. The episode originally aired Jan. 8, 1991.

This I remember being rebroadcast Christmas Day 2001.

Maybe the week of May 11-15 will have some Stephanie bitch slaps from 1987-1999

Excuse me, but WHAHAHATTT?!?! They rewrote Cliff's death to blame it on Victor? Really? Foul.

The original Fall 1996 story was that Hope called Victor after Cliff was killed by a drunk driver and Victor went to Kansas to visit Hope and Adam. In the original story Adam was about 4 years old; he had been SORASed a little bit (Adam was born onscreen Spring 1995).

The rewrite was that Cliff was in debt to a loan shark and the loan shark hired someone to drive Cliff off the road but ended up killing him. The loan shark then cornered Hope and 11 year old Adam killed the loan shark, then Hope called Victor to handle things.

I think I have the events correct, but others can chime in w/ additional info.

I'm currently watching 1994. Which is a real struggle. It's the Buzzard show. With way too much Lucy, Mindy, Nick and Tangie. The best is Vanessa & Bridget's custody battle. And Bridget & Dylan. I also like Ed & Eve. With a teen aged Michelle causing problems. Wanting Ed with Holly. Who she had become close too after Mo's death.

My online watching for the first time was episodes from September 1992 to March 1994 (I watched Spring 1989 to Summer 1992 both live and online). After Maureen's death, it was the Buzz hour. I stopped my online watching when I got to Nancy Curlee's last episode.

There is a scene where the Abbotts are all together in the mansion, and you get to see first-hand just how well all of them blended as a unit. Jerry Douglas, Terry Lester, Eileen Davidson, Beth Maitland - there was something so good about seeing them all happy together.

Those four are the Abbotts to me. Y&R made a big mistake killing off John Abbott, he was the heart of the family. I still miss Terry Lester. I often wonder how he would've played Jack's 1990s storylines, if he would've gotten a Lead Actor Daytime Emmy after his 4 consecutive 1980s nominations, and if he would have eventually left Y&R before the end of his life.

Much like the original families, the Abbotts were almost all recasts less than a decade into their introduction, yet Bill Bell kept the Abbotts on instead of replacing them with a new family.

  6. I remember Leanna disappearing without any explanation in early 1992 but Barbara Crampton remained in the opening credits until that summer I think. I don't remember Leanna returning until 1998 during the Victor/Diane divorce.

Makes me miss the CBS Daytime soap block so much, especially when they were all good in the late 80’s/early 90’s.

Y&R, B&B, ATWT, and GL all flowed so well together as a soap block. All offering something different, but also a real synergy as a block of soaps when they were watchable.

CBS Daytime on the whole was so awesome in the late 1980s/early 1990s. There was the game show block and all four daytime dramas were amazing to watch.

This could be a Victor week or a Victor/Nikki week like I'd predicted.

An all Victor week should include EB's first episode, Victor sees Nikki at the Bayou, EB's first scenes w/ TL and ED.

Mark Derwin at the time was a great find too.

I never thought much of Mark Derwin's acting on Y&R and then a few months after his role on Y&R ends he shows up on Guiding Light as a detective. Talk about contrasts in characters LOL. It was surprising to me how he became so popular on GL, with winning a 1993 Soap Opera Digest Award for Hottest Male Star (he beat Antonio Sabato Jr. for that award) and being nominated for Lead Actor at the 1993 Daytime Emmys.

Thanks! I remember that plot point of where Nikki was surprised that Victor didn't stop her from marrying Josh, it was stuck out like a sore thumb lol.

It definitely was a lull period for Y&R. That quad took up a lot of airtime, we're lucky that Tom and Cast were superior actresses to carry it though even though it got even worse  from her out. I recall the big events during this time were:

-Ashley being attacked in the park and saved by the mysterious Kurt Costney who then went to live at Katherine's so the show could use Katherine I guess lol.

-Pregnant Sharon falling in a snowstorm, then spending like 2 months in the hospital asking "Is my baby going to make it?" every day she was on.

    -Danny and Phyllis getting married.

-Jill slutting it up with John Silva again and then of course meeting the Dennison's.

-Neil becoming a complete misogynist toward's Dru and trying to maker be a housewife and produce more babies while Olivia admired and cheered him on from the sidelines.

-Diane returned and fell in love with Jack while Jack indirectly ruined Nick's career prospects in Seattle by acquiring a highly bankrupt company for Newman due to his own oversight, thereby royally pissing Victor off.

Did I miss anything else? The moments of when Michael Baldwin was released from jail, Sasha's mysterious death in a fire, Grace sleeping with Nick etc. finally got the show up and running again.

Other storylines from the lull period: A new chemist at Jabot was to be a love interest for Ashley but that pairing tanked; I can't remember the character's name but the actor was the same one who was Shawn Garrett a decade earlier. There was also little Daniel getting meningitis that lead to Danny and Phyllis getting together, and Cassie's arrival. By the second half of 1997 things starting picking up (Olivia and Malcolm's wedding, the custody battle for Daniel, Victor's pursuit of Diane) and that lead to an excellent 25th anniversary year in 1998.

I thought Scott was cute in the early 90s, and he and Victoria were pretty much my first 'ship.  Feels like he aged quite a bit during the 5 years between the Masquerade episode and this one (from age 25 to 30).

Scott Reeves is almost 54 and hasn't aged well at all. I can't believe he's about to be a grandfather.

Nikki, at this point was this where she ran off with marry Josh in Las Vegas? Weird to think she had a wedding so soon after her engagement with Brad went up in smoke.

I think Nikki eloped w/ Josh in the fall of 1996. From what I remember, Nikki thought she and Victor were getting back together but then Victor went to Kansas to see Hope and little Adam (I think this was when Cliff was killed) and so a disappointed Nikki turned to Josh.

I remember watching in 1998 and just not really caring much about the Nina/Ryan/Victoria/Cole quad. It still rings true watching this episode. Meh. But I love Tricia Cast and Heather Tom so  they act circles around the men.

I didn't like that quadrangle storyline. Scott Reeves and J. Eddie Peck were not prize catches to me.

I remember Fall 1996 through to the first half of 1997 as being a lull period. I was watching once or twice a week and keeping up online and through soap magazines.

    MTS and Brenda?

Well BD had beef w/ almost everyone LOL. I recall that BD was quite vocal about the nepotism at Y&R in the mid to late 1980s so maybe that's where the rumors of beef w/ MTS come from.

  12. 1 hour ago, DRW50 said:

With Y&R you never know what or why, you just know it's a mess. Jeanne Cooper I think once said MTS did not speak to her for 3 years and she never knew why.

JC wrote about the beef w/ MTS in her memoir and

    Spoiler

VR alluded to the MTS/JC beef in her "novel" Secrets of a Soap Opera Diva.

The bigger question is, who didn't have beef w/ MTS? There's beef that's been documented in print/on social media (JC, VR) and beef that's been rumored (BD, RL).

No Casey did appear in summer 1989 tending to Cricket after she was raped, and I assume she was called to testify during Derek's trial. I guess afterwards Casey just left, without a goodbye scene?

I remember Casey as part of Cricket's rape storyline and that was her last appearance until Nikki was in the hospital after being shot in 1998.

Weren't there rumors Roberta and MTS had a falling out at one point?

I read that too, and maybe that was why Casey was absent for almost 10 years.

Lol remeber when SOD did away with their website for like two years 2000-2002 because they didn't find online presence suitable?

I don't remember that at all.

Soaps in Depth had one of the longest runs of the soap magazines. These are the magazines I recall over the years; I'm probably missing a few.

Soap Opera Digest - November 1975 to present

Soap Opera Update - January 1988 to September 2002

Soap Opera Weekly - November 1989 to April 2012

Soap Opera Magazine - October 1991 to February 1999

Soaps in Depth - March 1997 to May 2020

Soap Opera News - March 1997 to February 1999
