Ah, but that WAS his game plan, according to his original story projections. Yes, Kelly and Morgan were slated to marry, and Nola was to pay dearly for her lies. However, Quint was NOT supposed to end up as Nola's true love -- at least not originally. I don't have the full details, but going on comments made by (I think) Tom Casiello (who had access to Marland's writing at one time) and John Wesley Shipp, as well as how the beginning of the story played out onscreen, I surmise that Marland had designed Quint to be a (short-term) villain, who would ultimately place Nola in some type of mortal danger, thereby forcing Kelly to rescue her, and launching him and Nola into a full-fledged relationship. Of course, once Lisa Brown and Michael Tylo began working together, Marland saw the chemistry between them and changed his plans. That's why I think JWS, as Kelly, floundered once Kelly and Morgan's marriage fell apart (which, in retrospect, was part of Marland's original plan), because, without Nola, there was nowhere for him to go, romantically speaking.

I could swear I read once how Marland had planned for Luke and Laura to become a couple eventually (although, I don't know whether the rape was part of the plan) but that he wanted to take his time getting there. I dunno, I've also read Pat Falken Smith say she never intended for what happened at the Campus Disco to be considered rape either. The whole BTS on that plot twist is murky as hell.

I think you're talking about the rapemance, when Todd, or Trevor St. John-as Victor Jr.-as Todd, had sex with Marty, who was suffering from amnesia and did not recognize him as one of the three men who had raped her years before. I also think the retcons that turned TSJ's Todd into Roger Howarth's Todd's twin brother (but with a surgically altered face) was supposed to negate that storyline. However, the fact that he BELIEVED he was Todd when he slept with the woman "he" had raped back in college still makes the situation offensive. True. All true. Thank goodness, though, DAYS never tried to sell us a Jack/Kayla pairing after the rape, like they did with Bill and Laura. In fact, I think Kayla has always had mixed feelings about Jack even after he redeemed himself in the eyes of most everyone else in Salem. Because, where do you go once you've acknowledged someone to be a rapist? You can't turn him back into the hero, and you certainly can't have him reunite with his victim (even though, to be perfect and frank, she was the ONLY female on the show who made him palatable). So, either you kill him off (which was never on the table) or you turn him into a completely different character, like how DAYS turned Jack into a clown. Again, that's what I found remarkable about Roger Thorpe's journey: although GL certainly added layers to him both before and after he raped Holly and Rita, they never swept his actions under the proverbial rug or turned him into some romantic hero/comic relief character. They let Roger BE Roger. Frankly, as pissed as I was to learn about Laura's rape and how it was turned into a "seduction" in order to make her and Luke a couple, I was just as pissed when the show brought it back up as a means to destroy the two. IDC what Tony Geary thought or wanted: you don't ask the audience to invest not just years but DECADES in the couple that literally put soaps and GH back on the map, just to have it all end like that. If you don't want to be saddled with Luke and Laura forever, then just f**king quit. Let Luke die some noble death, so Laura (and the audience) can grieve and then move on.

Rick Edelstein seemed to have been a great writer all around, even though he wrote only for HTSAM and THE DOCTORS. It's a shame he moved onto primetime.

Mama Khan had a similar experience with the mother of her first husband. (She's still friendly toward her, for some, unfathomable reason). Except, my grandmother (well, she's not REALLY my grandmother, but...) took a step farther by manipulating Mama Khan out of her and her then-husband's house as the two were divorcing, leaving her AND my older brother virtually out on the street. (Again, why they have remain in contact all these years is a total mystery to me).

Best & Worst Soaps: Less than 10 Years On Air Division
Yes, it was. Patrick Mulcahey and Frank Salisbury were and are the best dialogue writers in the business, bar none. But, SB might have been TOO different (for daytime) to have any real staying power. Plus, was it just me, or did anyone else who watched notice how the writers tended to throw out or cut short even the stuff that WAS working? It's as if Chuck Pratt, Jr., or whoever was HW'ing the show at the moment, had an extremely short attention span.

As far as the Daytime Emmys were concerned, Susan Lucci's popularity (and notoriety, as a perennial Emmy loser) was both a blessing and a curse. The longer The Streak went on, the more eyeballs it attracted to the yearly telecasts, to the point where they could air in primetime and not just win the night, but be the most-watched program of that week. But, The Streak was bound to end, sooner or later, either with an eventual win (which it did), or her decision not to nominate herself anymore. It's just unfortunate that daytime soaps in general have fallen by the wayside in terms of popularity, and that the Emmys couldn't come up with any other, compelling reason for people to keep turning in BESIDE The Streak.

Exactly. The only thing you and I and other African-Americans can do in times like these is what we ALWAYS do in times like these: take care of ourselves, and each other. (Oh, God, did I just quote Jerry Springer?). Meanwhile, in other news, Theresa May is DONE.

That, too, lol. Before 2016, we thought it was INCONCEIVABLE for someone like Donald Trump -- a "reality" TV series "star," who had never run for political office before -- to attain the highest office in the land. But, you know, part of the reason why I ultimately sat out the election, is because I called it waaaaaay before Super Tuesday. When friends on FaceBook (and elsewhere) were EMPHATIC with me that Trump wouldn't make it to the primaries, I knew otherwise -- and that's because I could see where this country was heading post-Obama.

I do. People who voted for Trump, for third parties, or for no one at all, simply because "their man" (or woman) was not on the ballot, did so, because their station in life afforded them the opportunity. I mean, it's easy for Berners who are predominantly Caucasian, predominantly upper- and upper-middle class, and predominantly Christian and heterosexual to vote for Jill Stein or Gary Johnson, or to stay home, isn't it? Because, even if Hillary had won and had made a gigantic mess of everything, how much would they have lost -- I mean REALLY lost -- by the time she was through? For that matter, how much do you think they will actually lose before TRUMP is finished (if he ever finishes)? Only those who TRULY stood to lose a lot with Trump getting elected (and who knew it) were willing to set aside their hurt feelings and everything else, and vote for Hillary. Otherwise, voters saw 2016 as nothing more than a game.

Far Lefties: "But...Hillary [as President] would have been So. Much. Worse." Really? How? How would anything that Hillary might have done as President, Commander-in-Chief and CEO of the United States been worse than separating children from their parents and then having them die in captivity? Don't get me wrong. I, too, bought into the "Hillary Would Be TERRIBLE" hype (although, not enough to vote for Trump). But, there comes a point when you have to admit you were wrong.
