I wanted to say spermgate. In rewatching some of 1998, seeds were planted (no pun intended🙃 ) as early as '98 with Victor's vasectomy. In fact all of sperm gate and Kyle's birth are direct resuls of Veronica shooting Nikki. 3 years of story 1998-2001! Soaps cannot write like this today. In rewatching I saw the exact date April 6, 1998, when Jack told Diane that vasectomies could be reversed while the pair had assumed Nikki had died from her gunshot wounds. To think that revelation still drives story today.

Y&R had so many examples from the early 90s! 1988-90: George Rawlins death. It started with Paul discovering he was with his clients wife, and ended with Paul gaslighting Cassandra and believing she was seeing his ghost while vacation in the Caribbean! 1990-1992: Sheila's baby switch had so many twists. Sheila raping Scott and getting pregnant. Sheila realizing Scotty had a birthmark after the switch, then having it removed. Molly Carter learning the truth but catching a stroke which paralyzed her communication. Lauren setting up the insurance scheme to run a paternity test on Scotty not realizing she actually needed a maternity test. The doctor that treated Sheila's miscarriage showing up in town to work at the same lab as Sheila & Scott. The biggest payoff being her transition to B&B!

What were some examples of soap storylines that were well planned, structured, and timed with a good payoff. GH: Carly from 1996-1999. The umbrella plot was Carly being Bobbie's daughter which contained her affairs with Tony, Jason & AJ as well as the spinoff plot of Michael's paternity. I believe it came about as a result of Luke looking for a bone marrow donor which also spawned Nickolas. 3 years of solid story. The two big payoffs were the Carly & Bobbie scene at Michael's baptism and Robin teling AJ the truth. OLTL: Victor Lord's murder 1993-1995. It started with the introduction of Sloan and "Lord of the Banner", spiraled into Dorian on trial for Murder, continued into Viki splitting into multiple personalities with the payoff being Viki realizing she "killed" her own dad. seeds of Vickys eventual psyche crack were being planted as early as late 94.

I love how Erica always got the biggest headshot in the intros from 1990 onwards lol! Makes sense. Erica was there from roughly the start so it made sense that she would have such prominent focus. Same for OLTL's Viki. It's different for Reva on GL as she came on 46 years into the show's run and became it's star. As for Victor on Y&R I never minded him as a prominent focus. I just hated how excessively villainous they make him again after about 2007.

That was also one of Bobbie's last real stories too. What was she really given after this? Jerry Jax and the sex tape? Having grown up on JFP/Guza era GH I only knew Bobbie through youtube classics even though she made recurring appearences during this period.

Brooke's stories were pretty entertaining.

Was OLTL's Viki on the backbuner on the show's final yeas (as is sadly customary for older aged charachers)?

GH: Sam took Courtney's place in the show eating quad. Why did they decide to kill Courtney off? Did they loose interest in her once they had the charachter and Jason split?

Often, charachters eating a show has a negative connotation. Were there any examples of charachters occupying ALOT of screen time that you were okay with?

GL: I know many would say Reeva and that the show was more of her ensemble during her missing years from 1990-95. GH: Sonny, Carly, Jason from about 1999-2012.

Diane needs to have come back with an agenda. To take over Newman or Jabot, to take Michael from Lauren or something with life.

ATWT looked alot older in the early 80s before the Marland era. WORST: Guiding Light's new production model. The attempt at making it look like a reality show did not work.

Sam has been irrelevant since she left Jason. Let me add Tony Jones for GH. The Carly story --which was masterfully written -- destroyed him, especially after his kidnapping of Michael. EDIT: Y&R: Katherine didn't really have any story focused soely around her from about 1990 post Marge to the 1998 Estate battle, excluding her breast cancer scare which I've never seen. She was a talk to/ supporting for most of that time.

RIP to Mr Clint Buchannan, Ver Dorn is the Clint I grew up on. Everybody's going, SMH.

What are some charachters that went from fruntburner to backbuner. My list: GH: Felicia, Mac, Bobbie, Monica, and Lucy haven't had actualy story in years Y&R: Christine, Danny, Nina OLTL Clint from about 1993 after Viki's affair until Jerry Ver Dorn took over. ATWT: Bob, Kim, Lisa EDIT: Literally had no idea Mr Ver Don passed away! RIP.

GOOD: ATWT despite shrinking sets still had decent presentation up to the end. BAD: AMC and OLTL looked really cheap in the mid 2000s, coupled by cheap looking openings. AMC recovered when they moved the show to LA by the end of it's run.

Name a time period in which a soap had either great or terrible on screen presentation. Y&R obviously had solid production value from the 70s into the early 2000s. The early 90s and 1995-2001 especially, even though the wardrobe had gotten toned down at that point. DAYS did not look great in the late 70s clips I've seen. It did look great from the mid/late 80s up until about 2009! I was surprised at how great some of DAYS' sets were as late as 2005. B&B in the early 90s was peak glamour!

Who would you guys rank as the best soap/worst soap of 1999?

A long term pairing is what I'm curious to see the results of. Yes! That would've been good.

This sucks! He definitely had the best network late night show and I wish he was on at 11:35pm. I'd prefer Colbert at 12:37am to go against Seth Myers.
