  1. According to IMDb, Klein didn’t become a regular cast member until the third season, although he makes his first appearance in episode 4 of the first season (entitled “No Children, No Dogs), which ironically, happens to be streaming on Pluto TV at this very moment.
  2. When news was released of Somer’s recurrence, it was just so sad but this woman battled valiantly for decades! So many of us have witnessed up close how horrible this disease is and the enormous toll it can take on people. My condolences to her family for what is surely a tough time. We are losing too many people to the various forms of this disease. Surely it should be a all hands on deck in sustaining life and helping people reach better health outcomes without so much suffering. As a society, are truly invested in the wrong things.
  3. The echo of her voice as she yells out “They’re gonna laugh at you!” to Carrie, was haunting and is unforgettable. Speaking of Laurie’s portrayal of a mother with a contentious relationship with her daughter, she also had a memorable turn as the feisty mother of Christine Baranski’s character, Dr. Nora on the sitcom Frasier. Too bad, there doesn’t seem to be a clip of her on YouTube yelling “You Lil’ Whooore!” at Baranski’s character Dr. Nora. The inflections of her voice was iconic in and of itself. Here is a clip of her speaking about her experience on Frasier and how she apparently made the producers nervous about her.
  4. Yes, they were. I know that Anne Sward isn’t some people’s favorite, but when the writing was good, even in some instances when the writing was not so good, she could exude real emotional depth. I also found her believable as Craig and Margo’s (my memories of her mothering Cricket are sparse and faded) mother, despite the obvious real life age discrepancies. That’s what writers would refer to as the big emotional payoff. Today’s daytime soaps don’t seem to do this anymore. It’s an obvious turning point for Craig (as he has finally realized that he has hit rock bottom) and Lila has to witness the fact that her child has been beaten up (literally) by life, and she cannot do a thing to protect him from himself and his own poor choices, he must turn things around for the better by himself. It took at least a year to get these characters to this point, that’s why those scenes were so gripping. Today’s soaps usually try to rush the stories to these types of moments, without a proper story setup. As a result, it almost always ends up reading like emotional fodder as Emmy award bait. Thanks for the reminder @OzFrog for what caused many of us to fall in love with this show in the first place. On a slightly related note, has anyone ever asked Scott Bryce just how many times Craig went to jail? Didn’t his daddy Bart once land in prison? I had always hoped the show would have Bryant in danger of repeating some of the same mistakes as Craig and having Craig shift to a Lila type character who eventually would have to let Bryant take some hard knocks but unfortunately, they decided to SORAS Bryant only to destroy him and Craig’s character in the end.
  5. Thank you @janea4old. I appreciate you posting this archived link. The author apparently heard from a lot of people who were unable to get on and his posted what he’d written directly to his social media.
  6. You’re welcome. “Now That We Found Love” is such a great cover, it rivals the original imo. Bunny Rugs was the voice of that song, sadly, he died a few years ago. Third World is known for some really great live music. Michael Ibo Cooper was also a founding member of Inner Circle, I’m sure you’ve heard a couple of their songs (“Bad Boys Bad Boys whatcha gonna do…” and Sweat…”A Long Long Long Long Time”). It’s so sad that Cooper lost his wife last month and his son in March. This year has been awful for so many people.
  7. Michael Ibo Cooper, co-founding member of legendary reggae band Third World died last night. May he R.I.P. https://jamaica-gleaner.com/article/news/20231012/ibo-cooper-has-died Third World’s discography is extraordinary and their songs, particularly during the time period of the 1970s & ‘80s never fails to move me.
  8. That site must be getting a lot of traffic because it will not load.
  9. AMPTP believes anything and everything any entity outside of their own organization is unreasonable. They’ll soon be crying poverty yet again. They probably spend that amount on car service for their junior executives alone.
  10. Rep. Maxwell Frost talks with Stephen Colbert about the creation of an Office for the Prevention of Gun Violence (among other topics, like Congressional dysfunction).
  11. Hahaha, OMG, you’re right! So, that’s why Joan Collins flashed by on my screen.🤭 Now I have to admit, I was only half paying attention to the ad. Still, I am interested in checking out that channel now.😅
  12. This weekend, I saw an ad for a Dallas channel on Pluto TV. Is this new?
  13. From what I have read, Musk has kicked the misinformation machine into overdrive on that platform. Admittedly, I have been taking a break from U.S. news (and even CBS Mornings, which I watched on occasion) in anticipation of election year when it will be unavoidable.
  14. I agree with you, except for the original recipe part. Lucy Deakins was the first Lily. Martha, originally tried out for the role but lost out to Deakins. When Deakins elected to leave, the show contacted Martha. It seemed like the sign of the times that these shows wanted at least one character to be the teenage girl who would be the center of attention on the canvas. I sometimes wonder why they elected to choose Lily and not, say, Frannie Hughes (although I think when Julianne Moore first came on the show, they may have tried to go that route and elected to make the character more ‘Hughesian’ (I.e. earnest). I guess it was somewhat of a trend at the time for these daytime soaps to have their own version of a spoiled rich girl, GL had teenage Mindy Lewis before Lily and Cricket, although to be honest, Mindy seemed more complex as a character than the other two. With Mindy and Lily, they were heiresses so the entitled behavior made somewhat of sense. I always thought it a bit odd how Cricket just kind of sprung up and out at us. I think she had a cousin or somebody who was a photographer or something and suddenly, she was a spokesmodel for Jabot. Odd.
  15. Did anyone see this interview that Julie Chen did about her “spiritual awakening”?😐 Honestly, didn’t know where to post this. This thread seemed about the proper place.
  16. Wow, I wasn’t aware that Twitter re-enabled its embed feature for nonmembers. This is cute and hilarious.
  17. Yeah, but Dusty had already begun the maturation process even before Marland took over. Do you remember the scenes in 1983 where Dusty raged and basically destroyed John’s lab? Even by the next year, he had considerably calmed down from that volatile stage and started to mature. Lucinda didn’t approve of Dusty and Lily back then primarily because she thought Lily was too young to be so close to a boy she was obviously attracted to and feared for the worst if Lily and Dusty got too close. Once Lily became attracted to Holden, Dusty the minor became the safer alternative in comparison to an adult man in Holden. John Dixon, on the other hand, worried that Lily’s instability would lure Dusty into a sexual situation that they couldn’t easily extricate themselves from. He and Lucinda argued about it. Once Dusty and Lily were living together, Lucinda admitted that she didn’t approve, although she liked Dusty.
  18. This commercial for Frontier Communications popped up and I recognized the actress from those horrid final years of As The World Turns but I didn’t know the actress’s name, I couldn’t even remember the name of the character. I had to look it up and finally figured out that the character was called Sofie Duran and was played by Justine Cotsonas.
  19. You are definitely not alone in that regard, my friend. I am right there with you. From a dramatic perspective, it looked like the primary soap trope of the “poor little rich girl” finds an irresistible attraction to the lower-income older, good looking guy from the margins of farm country (Luther’s Corner). Although, the writing chose to promptly forget that Dusty wasn’t exactly embedded in elite circles either. In fact, Dusty spent most of his formative years in deep instability, not even really having a stable home until John Dixon became his guardian. I wished that the writing had kept some of that fiery temperament that Dusty had when he and Lily had first met but somehow, by the time that Lucinda’s biological daughter Sierra entered the landscape, Dusty had been made a stabilizing presence in Lily’s life to counteract the upheaval of Lily’s personal life. Then when Holden entered the canvas, the writing seemed to imbue his personality with many of the personality traits that once belonged to Dusty (restlessness, longing for something intangible, etc.), even though Holden was older and presumably more mature than Dusty. I do think though that had Brian Bloom remained on the show (although one cannot blame Bloom for doing what other popular soap actors did at the same time-exercise their rights to pursue other opportunities), there probably would have been many more romantic turns with Lily and Dusty, for the simple fact that Lily never could make up her mind where a romantic relationship between her and Dusty or her and Holden were concerned.
  20. James Wlcek. He played a character by the name of Linc Lafferty. There’s a connection to this character and a character that was portrayed by Sharon Case, named Debbie Simon.
  21. For laughs.
  22. Admittedly, during the 1990s, I got Julia Ormond and Juliette Binoche confused for a brief moment in time, but in my defense, they seemed to be on parallel career paths at that time.
  23. Weird that there are so many comments on the writer’s guild strike and there are tens of thousands of other striking workers, including health care workers on strike with nary a comment on this board. I admit, I have had a lot to say because I got an MFA in writing for the stage (primarily) and screen but I would have thought that people would be as interested in the subject of health care workers on strike because, not everyone is a writer but everyone has an intimate relationship with their health (at some point). It’s also weird that criticism of certain aspects is a kind of third rail on this board. It was relatively light criticism, it’s not like she was getting the Tyler Perry treatment. Whether her talk show goes on for years or gets canceled in the next season, she’ll be fine, she’ll be able to make bread, as the saying goes.
  24. Julia Ormond is suing Harvey Weinstein for sexual battery as well as CAA, Disney and Miramax (wait…there’s still a Miramax to sue?). She is also suing well known agents Kevin Huvane and Bryan Lourd of CAA. https://variety.com/2023/film/news/julia-ormond-harvey-weinstein-lawsuit-battery-caa-disney-1235744853/
  25. After not watching much tennis for the last, well, year or so, I decided to check some of the headlines regarding tournaments and scores and immediately see a story of yet another ATP player who hit an umpire in the face with a ball after swinging and hitting the ball in anger. This time, Boo Boo the fool’s name is Marc Polman, an Australian player. When will these guys learn?
