A long article about the Sugar Hill Gang and the early days of hip-hop. https://www.vanityfair.com/culture/2005/11/hiphop200511- ALL: Soap Stars - Where are they now?
I heard some were critical of Bomer so I'm glad he did alright. (how much do they show in that anyway?) I can't really see Quinto in that type of role, as I don't think he has the depth, but good for him. Parsons is a very good actor. It's a real credit to him that he doesn't seem to have let Sheldon typecast him.- MeTV
That sucks. My father always enjoys it.- The Politics Thread
Maybe they're trying to get out of seeing Trump too... I think a lot of these are temper tantrums. The right wing in the UK are starting to see the Brexit they wanted is never going to happen. They also don't have the ability to get Theresa May out of office. This is their only way to get attention. I read that people are denying this. Who knows. I will say if it's true then he is one of the most craven justices ever on the SCOTUS.- The Politics Thread
I can't stand this type of stuff. I don't know how to make it smaller as I don't see the font control button. I know this is what you get with Politico, but this type of blatant, glib dishonesty (the far right has made it clear they want no moderates and that two of their main goals are to ban abortion and gay marriage and overturn those rulings...and in many areas of the country it is now all but impossible for women to have abortions) is exactly why so many hate the pundit class. https://www.politico.com/magazine/story/2018/07/09/donald-trump-brett-kavanaugh-supreme-court-218963 That does not mean the Democratic opposition will refrain from hyperventilating. For some reason, when Democratic presidents place liberal Democratic justices on the Court, Republicans remain calm. They may oppose. They may even oppose when they should not. But the four horses of the apocalypse are kept in the barn, out of sight. The nominees even get a substantial number of Republican votes. Merrick Garland aside, Obama’s two nominees both got 67 votes. But when Republican presidents nominate conservative justices no less qualified, sane, and moderate, the left throws a fit. It matters not who the nominee is. Please, my liberal friends, calm down. Abortion is not in danger. Roe v. Wade is an intellectual mess and the practice of abortion is anything but “safe, legal and rare,” as President Bill Clinton wanted it to be. But the Supreme Court as an institution is slow to change and extremely slow to admit its mistakes. I may be a poor vote-counter, but it is hard for me to count five votes for overruling Roe. At most, the Court will continue the path of the past two decades of permitting reasonable regulation but protecting the core of the right to an abortion. And even if I am wrong about that, remember that a reversal of Roe means nothing more than a return to the democratic process. If abortion is as valued as right at Democratic activists claim that it is, there is no need to protect it from the voters. Moreover, technology is quickly making abortion almost impossible to prohibit. Same-sex marriage is in even less danger. Again, Obergefell was not the best-reasoned of decisions, but there is zero appetite on the right to reverse it. At most, individuals and religious groups opposed to the practice will be protected from being coerced to lend their support or approval. That should have been the law all along.- Netflix: One Day at a Time
That's great. Between this, Danny Pino, and Gloria Estefan, they're really pulling out all the stops.- The Politics Thread
The article about the farmer who is now supporting Phil Bredesen because of Trump reminds me a lot of the old days when we'd hear about this or that rich Republican who was now supporting Hillary. I think he's going to be in for a rude awakening about how many below him on the food chain will still blindly support Trump. These men have lost all control of the monsters they created. I hate to be shallow, but I just couldn't even stomach watching most of Kavanaugh, who looks like he just got straight off PTL. I'd say he is better than that Comey woman, but they both think I'm going to burn in hell and they're both happy to let the world burn, so I guess it doesn't really matter, it's just a difference of style. I think Trump was never going to pick a woman (at most he might if it's to replace a woman) but beyond that, I have a feeling that for all the slobbering from the right over how she would have made Democrats look like heathens and sexists, McConnell probably knew she stood a huge chance of not being confirmed. I thought of all the hype of China moving forward in responsible environmental methods when I read this: https://www.bbc.com/news/science-environment-44738952- The Politics Thread

There was an article a few weeks ago about refugees who were only planning to briefly stay in Mexico before heading to America, but are now staying there because they are afraid of losing their children. I guess many would count that as a "win." I consider it heartless, although I also think those in Mexico who funnel in illegal immigrants for profit and then dump them off on a country that even before this gave them little respect, many of them with no money and no English-speaking abilities, are heartless. Sadly this is the type of issue that is more difficult to talk about than "build the wall" or "abolish ICE." Speaking of things that are difficult to talk about, I keep seeing people saying that they refuse to acknowledge any Supreme Court justices of Trump's or decisions of his court because of Merrick Garland. Hell, I'd love to do that too, but surely with the way the world is going, it's not a good idea to just play let's pretend.- The Politics Thread
Beyond the very few rich people who have come here for business opportunities (which are now drying up because of tariffs and instability) I think most of the people who have come to the US in recent years have only come because they had no other options. Most of the world hates and resents America unless they need us, and has for a long time. American exceptionalism has been a delusion and a fantasy since W, if not earlier. Trump just burst the bubble instead of letting it slowly deflate. I do agree, but this seems like its more about a push by the baby food companies to stay relevant. Russia hates women even more than we do, to the point of repealing laws to make it easier for men to beat women and children, but they played along because they aren't in with the companies. The sad part of that is most of the backlash over Kavanaugh is because he isn't seen as conservative enough. That's why many are pushing for that Comey woman, who hates all the right people. They are likely hoping the media, which will fall for the "Democrats hate strong women!" narrative yet again, will help her get through. I will be surprised if Trump would pick anyone but a white man, unless he has no real choice.- B&B: Old/Classic Discussion & Articles

I liked the pop theme too. It always makes me smile. It's always a bit sad seeing Roxy, knowing she was so callously dumped and then forgotten about. Unfortunately that was a real pattern for GL characters from the '80s on... (some might say even earlier than that) I didn't like Vanessa's hair for most of the '80s. Oddly enough Maeve was wearing it like that again, sort of, in GL's last few years, and it looked much better.- Guiding Light Discussion Thread
I'd put B&E over this period, as for the most part I found the show watchable and entertaining (albeit not as much in the last year) when they were writing, and I'd also put the best of McTavish over this period (the worst was...well, worse). My main issue with the show at this time is it's just so damn weird. I mean we're watching a story about a psycho circus performer saving Reva after she tried to kill herself. Why?? It had been weird for a lot of 1985 as well and just seemed to slowly twist itself into knots until Pam Long returned in 1987.- As The World Turns Discussion Thread
I think it was easy to get that impression because she was so at odds with the family, but yes she wasn't long-lost. I wonder if they didn't go with "Ivy" because DAYS had recently had a character by that name. There's only one true Ivy on soaps anyway.- ALL: Soap Stars - Where are they now?

SNL used to rag on that speech too. One of the few things I do not miss about Presidents of more modern years is the phony, overwritten speeches that most of them never could pull off anyway (only Reagan could, which is probably the only compliment I can pay him). Even Obama's best moments were more from the heart than from the pen). Of course I'd take that over "build the wall" or "they aren't bringing their best."- The Politics Thread

I read an article a week or two ago that naturalized citizens are also being deported (or at the very least taken into custody). Maybe that's wrong. I hope it is. I'm glad the organization is standing behind her now. Their statement yesterday didn't give me that impression.- The Politics Thread
Please let the people of OK keep him firmly away from the high office he so desperately wanted there. The part that got me was when the organization she was with basically pulled a Mariah Carey ("I don't know her.") I hope that someone is going to help her as I imagine she will be high on the deportation list. - Your daily (or nightly) thought
