  1. I've seen some people point out that Julia was likely the first, although I don't know how much the poverty aspect was emphasized. Either way, Alice was definitely different from a number of other sitcoms at the time, especially those earlier, grittier episodes. Two I remember well are when Mel took Tommy hunting and Tommy was left traumatized, and when Alice was torn about whether or not she should allow a gay friend to take Tommy camping.
  2. Thank you for letting us know. I don't think I've seen her. I'm glad you are showing more care in remembering the past than anyone at Emmerdale is.
  3. Very sad news. Alice went on and on, but Linda was such a quirky, charismatic lead, and she had a presence I rarely saw elsewhere. Even by the end when she was just showing up at random times as a whole other character. I especially enjoyed her different takes on the Alice theme (the first few are the best). So many losses as we wind down 2024.
  4. @dc11786 Love reading your thoughts. I don't remember having any real use for LML's work, although they do make some interesting choices with Julie that pay off when better writers come along in a few years.
  5. I still don't even know why they brought poor Signy Coleman back. The worst part, as SPW or SOD panned at the time, was the romantic dinner where he had to perform a tracheotomy on her (was he out with Ashley and saw her choking - I can't remember). I did like that we saw the wife reading the letter, IIRC, which was not the usual flashback style of the show. I agree she would have been a better Ashley. Shattuck was an all time failed casting choice, even if she became tolerable later on.
  6. I have to admit I just had no interest in anything the show did with Carly in ATWT's last decade, but I will have to try to find those scenes. Everything with Ava these days comes off to me as rewriting plans to kill her off, but if they are keeping her around, building her relationship with Lucas isn't a bad idea. I wish they'd done more with Ava and Sam, although that probably would never have worked.
  7. I don't really know anything about Chad or his relationship with Frank, I just thought the shifts onscreen felt abrupt. If Frank cares that much about ATWT (more than most at ATWT did by the end), that would be something...I just figured it was because they have nothing else to do with the characters.
  8. I imagine the show would have been torn because someone there clearly likes Drew (which is why we are now having this big couple push for Drew/Willow), but I think there's a lot of clear story in place which has been changed. I wonder if his exit was abrupt. You also have characters who don't even really need to be involved, like Lucas, saying to Drew and Willow what Michael should be saying.
  9. I wonder this but in another way - if they might have played up the vengeful side more if he was staying.
  10. Thanks. Never seen that clip. Such generic material but strong performances from Maeve and Kim. They never should have even made Reva pregnant with HB's child.
  11. I can't remember either. Maybe she needed a crooked doctor. They seemed to just forget the whole thing fast and Tony went back to very infrequent appearances at the hospital. Another scene I have no memory of, which suggests throwing anything against the wall for those two characters. I wonder if Katherine/Tony (Tony turning to her after Bobbie/Damian, maybe Katherine using him to spite Damian) might have been more interesting back in the day than Mac/Katherine:
  12. A few bits from AWHP: ANOTHER WORLD: AUDITIONS Mitch Longley (Byron Pierce) was originally cast as David Campbell, Olivia's physical therapist. Beverley Owen was originally cast as the recast Lenore Moore but then they hired Susan Sullivan when she was available. Beverly was then given the role of Paula McCrea.
  13. That's definitely a big what might have been. It's hard to imagine AW on ABC. Maybe they could have gotten Harding Lemay back one last time as he was at ABC then.
  14. Ray Liotta mentions in an old interview that his first job was on OLTL as a corpse. ANOTHER WORLD: AUDITIONS
  15. If DAYS had moved to ABC, as was rumored at the time, I wonder if they would have kept AW or still cleaned house of that and Sunset Beach.
  16. That makes sense. I see what you mean. I think I'm just too sour on EE's recent years to be impartial the way I should be.
  17. That's a good line. I imagine some NBC higher-up. They should have kept the show on longer if they wanted them to try to push out that gunk. Thanks.
  18. The only part of a possessed Rachel I would have enjoyed is if Iris had returned (less likely in AW's last years than demonic possession). Amanda: Iris...Mom's been possessed by the Devil! Iris: I've been telling people that for 30 years.
  19. I haven't seen the episodes myself but from what I read some patient came into the hospital with vampire bites and I think Tomas may have started having dreams or was bitten (?). It didn't go very far.
  20. They kept flirting (vampire Tomas, Carl selling his soul), but luckily kept averting until near the end with Lumina. At least none of that really affected central characters (Amanda, but she was so generic). Maybe the original version would have had more of an influence.
  21. One of my least favorite soap opens. To me it has dated much more than the Gayle/Morris intro. And then they could not afford proper updates (although they had a few, like Rhonda Ross - hell knowing P&G by then maybe she paid for it herself). My "favorite" was when they didn't bother to update Kevin McClatchy leaving but kept the shot of Dahlia Salem, so we just got shots of her spinning in some unknown figure's arms. Any time I see that I keep expecting to hear "AAAGGGHHH!!!" and to see her go flying. So that's when they choose to listen to the fans... I did see a fanfic on here a long time ago that made good use of them but the possibilities in the last years of a soap were not much. At least they didn't go through with the plans to have Carl bring Satan to Bay City (imagine a possessed Rachel).
