ARTICLE: Nancy Lee Grahn, A Martinez and Lane Davies Remember ‘Santa Barbara’ Co-Creator Bridget Dobson
Earlier this month, “Santa Barbara” co-creator and co-head writer Bridget Dobson died. She was 85 years old. Dobson was the daughter of the late Frank and Doris Hursley, co-creators of “General Hospital.” She had been married to her husband Jerome Dobson since 1961. Together, they co-created “Santa Barbara” for NBC, which aired from 1984 to 1993 and won three consecutive Daytime Emmy Awards for Outstanding Daytime Drama Series (1988, 1989, 1990). In a social media post following the news of Dobson’s death, “General Hospital” star Nancy Lee Grahn (Alexis Davis) shared her sentiments about working with the veteran soap opera writer on “Santa Barbara,” where Grahn portrayed Julia Wainwright Capwell and won her first Daytime Emmy Award for Outstanding Supporting Actress in a Drama Series (tie with Debbi Morgan from “All My Children”). On Instagram, Grahn said, “Bridget Dobson and her husband Jerry hired me to play the most curious, absorbing, complex, inspiring, character of my career. “Realizing the role of Julia Wainwright, having the privilege of feeling my way through this beautifully constructed character’s relationship with herself and others was life altering for me. It advanced me as an actress and a woman. It introduced 140 some countries to me and me to them and it set the path to a career that has so far lasted 38 yrs. The effect just one person can have on your life is quite extraordinary. Rest in greatness, Bridget and thank you.” Also remembering Dobson was A Martinez, who portrayed Cruz Castillo on the soap opposite Marcy Walker, who portrayed Eden Capwell. In a post on Facebook, Martinez stated, “Bridget and her husband Jerry eventually ascended into the realm of legend. As is always the case with great writers who will not be denied, their obsession to build their own world –– and share it ––delivered emotional medicine for years to millions of people around the world, and the power of that medicine lingers to this day. Thank you, Bridget. May a warm wind carry you always.” In 1990, Martinez won a Daytime Emmy Award for Outstanding Lead Actor in a Drama Series for his portrayal of Cruz on “Santa Barbara.” Marcy Walker, A Martinez NBC/Everett Collection Lane Davies, who played Mason Capwell, love interest to Grahn’s Julia, said on Instagram, “Bridget was possessed of an indomitable spirit, irrepressible creativity, and a truly wicked sense of humor. Together with her husband of 60-plus years, Jerry, she gave us some of the most memorable moments and characters in the history of Daytime Television. She will be sorely missed by all who were lucky enough to have known her.” Lane Davies, Charles Bateman, Todd McKee, (bottom): Marcy Walker, Robin Wright NBC/Everett Collection In addition to “Santa Barbara,” Dobson worked as a writer and later as co-head writer of “General Hospital,” working alongside her husband. After exiting the writer’s room at the ABC soap in __, the Dobsons took over writing duties for “Guiding Light” and later “As The World Turns” before planning to retire in the early 1980s. Incidentally, NBC reached out to the Dobsons, asking them to create a brand new daytime soap opera that they would own and have full creative control over. “NBC-TV called to ask if we were to own a show, if we were to be in complete charge of every creative aspect of a show, from sets and costumes and hairstyles and music to every minute detail of the production, acting and writing, would we be willing to work again? Nobody in history had ever been asked this question. Not before and not since,” Dobson said in an interview published by a “Santa Barbara” blog dedicated to the history of “Santa Barbara” created by Pierpaolo Dongiovanni, a close friend of the Dobsons, who was the first to announce the news of Dobson’s passing. ARTICLE: NBC Moves ‘Quantum Leap’ to Tuesdays, Sets Premiere Date for Second Half of Season 2
“Quantum Leap” is set to return for the second half of its second season on Tuesday, January 30, NBC recently announced. The series is moving to Tuesdays at 10:00 p.m. ET/PT, taking over the slot most recently occupied by “Found,” which wrapped up its first season earlier this week. Season 2 of “Quantum Leap” premiered in the fall and aired eight of the 13 episodes ordered by the network. The five remaining episodes will air weekly with a two-hour season finale scheduled for Tuesday, February 20 from 9:00-10:00 p.m. ET/PT. All episodes will be available to stream next day on Peacock. Taking place nearly 30 years after the original series, which aired on NBC from 1989-1993 and followed Dr. Sam Beckett as he stepped into the Quantum Leap accelerator and vanished, the new iteration brings viewers to the present day where a new team, led by physicist Ben Song (Raymond Lee), has been assembled to restart the project in the hope of understanding the mysteries behind the machine and the man who created it. When Ben makes an unauthorized leap into the past, he leaves the team behind to solve the mystery of why he did it. At Ben’s side throughout his leaps is Addison (Caitlin Bassett), a decorated Army veteran who brings level-headed precision to her job and who appears as a hologram only Ben can see and hear. Meanwhile, at the helm of the highly confidential operation is Herbert “Magic” Williams (Ernie Hudson), a no-nonsense career military man who has to answer to his bosses, who won’t be happy once they learn about the breach of protocol. The rest of the team at headquarters includes Ian Wright (Mason Alexander Park), who runs the Artificial Intelligence unit “Ziggy,” and Jenn Chu (Nanrisa Lee), who heads up digital security for the project. As Ben leaps from life to life, putting right what once went wrong, it becomes clear that he and the team are on a thrilling journey. However, Addison, Magic, Ian and Jenn know that if they are going to solve the mystery of Ben’s leaps and bring him home, they must act fast or lose him forever. “Quantum Leap” ranks among the top 5 highest-rated dramas this season in the Adults 18-49 demo (Live+7) and is averaging 4.9 million viewers across all platforms (Live+35), according to the latest figures released by Nielsen. FOX Television Stations and Hearst Television have renewed “The Jennifer Hudson Show” for a third season, keeping the daytime talk show hosted by EGOT (Emmy, Grammy, Oscar and Tony) winner Jennifer Hudson on the air through at least the 2024-2025 television season. The show is produced and distributed by Warner Bros. Domestic Television Distribution. In addition to FOX and Hearst, the talk show also airs on stations owned by the Sinclair Broadcast Group, TEGNA, Nexstar Media Group, Scripps Media, and Gray Media Group, among other station groups. “Jennifer is a rare talent, both in front of and behind the camera. This winning combination, along with incredible production, has resonated with viewers,” said David Decker, president, content sales, Warner Bros. According to the latest Nielsen figures shared by Warner Bros., the show’s current second season is averaging 4.4 million total P2+ weekly viewers and has seen triple-digit increases in social engagement. ARTICLE: ‘The Drew Barrymore Show’ Renewed Through Season 5
Just four months into its fourth season, the nationally syndicated daytime show “The Drew Barrymore Show,” hosted by Drew Barrymore, has been renewed for a fifth season, Wendy McMahon, President and CEO of CBS News and Stations and CBS Media Ventures, recently announced. Originally set to launch its fourth season on September 18, 2023, during what would become the tail end of the since-concluded Writers Strike, producers opted to delay the new season’s start after the show came under fire for continuing without its striking writers. As a result, the talk show received a major rebuke from members of the Writers Guild, becoming a target of striking writers that led to a notable presence by picketers outside the show’s New York studio. Despite officially returning to production in October, with the new season launching on October 16, the show’s three WGA-affiliated writers declined to return to the series, forcing production to replace them. CBS Stations will continue as the anchor group for the daytime talk show through the 2024-2025 television season in major markets, including New York, Los Angeles and Chicago. “‘The Drew Barrymore Show’ is firing on all cylinders this season,” McMahon said in a statement. “Drew continues to catapult the show into the cultural zeitgeist with her empathetic and thoughtful interviews transporting viewers into her living room, where they feel like they are listening to a conversation between two friends that they are a part of. It’s an experience unlike any other in television. Drew is truly creating magic in daytime, and we’re thrilled to continue to bring that to our stations.” So far this season, the talk show is averaging 1.1 million viewers and seeing growth from October to December in several key measurements, including +9% in Households and +4% in Total Viewers. In New York alone, “The Drew Barrymore Show” is up in both Adults 25-54 (+23%) and Women 25-54 (+18%). Featuring Barrymore’s signature interview style, the show has quickly become a destination for entertainment, information, and important conversations. Composed of exclusive celebrity interviews, unique lifestyle segments, social media influencers and feel-good news stories, the show’s mission is to touch all aspects of life through Drew’s unique optimistic lens. Recent guests have included the full cast of the new “Mean Girls” film, including Renee Rapp, Angourie Rice, Avantika, Bebe Wood, Christopher Briney, Auli’I Cravalho and Jaquel Spivey, plus guests who’ve already appeared in recent episodes or will appear in the near future such as Austin Butler, Callum Turner, Annette Bening, Dan Levy, Isla Fisher, Lucy Hale, Clive Owen, Andie MacDowell, Bryce Dallas Howard, Jamie Oliver and Chrissy Teigen, among others. Later this month, the show will have the full cast of “Feud: Capote vs. The Swans” will appear, including Naomi Watts, Diane Lane, Chloë Sevigny, Demi Moore, Molly Ringwald and Calista Flockhart. “The Drew Barrymore Show” is produced and distributed by CBS Media Ventures and filmed in New York City. Drew Barrymore and Jason Kurtz are executive producers. Note: The post ‘The Drew Barrymore Show’ Renewed Through Season 5 appeared first on the Soap Opera Network website. Read More

R.I.P.: Alec Musser (ex-Del Henry, AMC) Dies at Age 50
Yeah, I would think she meant the latter because the reports I originally read following news of his death claimed COVID-related things, but to go from that to now being an apparent suicide in the manner stated in the medical examiner's report is just odd.

ARTICLE: R.I.P. Alec Musser – ‘I Wanna Be A Soap Star’ Winner and ‘All My Children’ Alum Dies at 50
Appearing in 123 episodes of ABC’s “All My Children” as a recast Del Henry from 2005-2007, actor Alec Musser has died. He was just 50 years old. According to a press release issued by the San Diego Medical Examiner’s office on Tuesday, Musser’s manner of death was declared to be suicide, with the cause of death listed as an apparent self-inflicted gunshot wound to the chest. The report further notes that on the morning of Saturday, January 13, Musser’s fiancée, Paige Press, “awoke and went to find the decedent seated and slumped forward on the bathroom floor.” After noting a firearm near him, Press called 911, where paramedics and law enforcement responded and confirmed the death. While the official date and time of injury is listed as unknown, the medical examiner’s office indicated in its report that the “decedent was a 50-year-old White male who lived with his fiancée in a home in Del Mar [California]. His fiancée last knew him to be alive on the evening of 01/12/2024 when she had gone to bed.” Musser was declared dead at 6:43 a.m. local time on 01/13/2024, according to the report. In a series of posts to her Instagram story on Saturday evening, Press shared several images of Musser and herself, together and separate, with one captioned saying, “Today is the worst day of my life. We were so happy.” She said in another message, “You were the best fiance [sic] I could of ever asked for. I don’t even think I can drive my g wagon anymore.” In a third message, Press noted, “I am never taking off my ring. @alecmusser I love you forever.” Other photos shared include some with Musser and his dog(s), with one message saying, “You were the best dog dad,” while another said, “Rue will never stop loving her dad,” which accompanied a photo of Musser holding the dog in his right hand while his left hand is on the steering wheel presumably steering the aforementioned Mercedes G-Wagon. Born Alexander Barrett Musser on April 11, 1973 in New York City, Musser resided in various parts of the New York Metropolitan area, including New Jersey and Connecticut, before eventually setting up roots in San Diego, California, which is where he achieved his higher education, graduating from the University of San Diego. An avid athlete with experience working at a ski resort and as a lifeguard, Musser eventually caught the eye of a modeling agent, leading to his first modeling job working for Abercombie & Fitch. He appeared in campaigns for Gianfranco Ferré, Speedo and Target. His work was also featured in magazine ads, including those shown in Men’s Health, GQ and Cosmopolitan. He also appeared on the cover of several magazines, including Maximum Fitness. As the winner, Musser landed a 13-week contract on “All My Children,” playing a recast Del Henry, first played by Winsor Harmon in the mid-1990s. Following his stint on “All My Children,” Musser continued acting, appearing in such shows as the Lifetime comedy series “Rita Rocks” and ABC’s mega-hit “Desperate Housewives.” In 2010, Musser made a notable appearance in the 2010 film “Grown Ups,” playing the Water Park Stud that the wives drooled over, at the annoyance of their husbands. Co-written by and starring Adam Sandler, “Grown Ups” grossed over $270 million worldwide and led to a sequel film, released in 2013. Musser did not appear in the film. “Grown Ups” (2010) Sony Pictures Entertainment In a post on Instagram on Saturday, Sandler said of Musser, “I loved this guy. Cannot believe he is gone. Okay, thanks for confirming. Seeing that downgrading the TLS version doesn't change things, it would seem not to be the issue then. I don't know the software used by the other sites you are comparing, but I'd imagine they aren't using similar technology. Sorry that you are going through this. I hope you are able to resolve this soon by upgrading your software or finding an easy workaround. Good luck!
