ARTICLE: Tyler Christopher’s Death Declared An Accident by Medical Examiner’s Office
It’s been three months since former “General Hospital” and “Days of our Lives” star Tyler Christopher passed away and now the San Diego Medical Examiner’s Office has officially declared the beloved actor’s death an accident. According to TMZ, which obtained the official report, Christopher’s cause of death is listed as “positional asphyxia due to acute alcohol intoxication” with the contributing condition cited as “coronary artery atherosclerosis.” In other words, Christopher died by suffocation as a result of where his body was positioned with the Medical Examiner noting that alcohol played a role in how he ended up that way. A further description indicated “plaque build-up in his arteries,” the outlet shared. Ultimately, Christopher’s cause of death had been declared accidental. It was back in October when the world learned that Tyler Christopher had passed away with what was then reported to be a “cardiac event.” Christopher’s former “General Hospital” co-star Maurice Benard first announced the actor’s passing on Instagram, saying, “Tyler was a truly talented individual that lit up the screen in every scene he performed and relished bringing joy to his loyal fans through his acting. “Tyler was a sweet soul and wonderful friend to all of those who knew him. Tyler was an advocate for better mental health and substance use treatment who openly spoke about his struggles with bipolar depression and alcohol. We are beyond devastated by the loss of our dear friend and pray for his children and his father.” During a 2022 conversation with Benard for the podcast series “State of Mind” which Benard hosts, Christopher said that after spending decades as a functioning addict that things changed “in the last 10 years, it went the other way because, you know, you become an addict at 9 years old, fast-forward 40 years, at some point, you cannot survive it. At some point, it will kill you.” A few days after Christopher died, TMZ reported that it was a close friend of the late actor who found him unresponsive in his San Diego apartment after the individual had been unable to get in touch with him. The friend reportedly gained access to Christopher’s apartment with a key they had been previously provided by the actor. Law enforcement was called and arrived at around 9:30 a.m. local time on Tuesday, October 31, 2023. Christopher was found in his bedroom and appeared to have been “dead for some time,” the outlet noted. Making his television acting debut in 1996 when he joined the cast of “General Hospital” as Nikolas Cassadine, the long-lost forgotten first son of Laura Collins (Genie Francis), Christopher quickly became a favorite with fans before opting to depart the series in 1999 for other endeavors. He reprised the role again beginning in 2003 and remained with the show through 2011. He again returned from 2013-2016. In 2017, Christopher joined “Days of our Lives” as Stefan DiMera. He departed in 2019 when the role was recast with former “General Hospital” co-star Brandon Barash. Tyler Christopher was just 50 years old when he died. The late actor is survived by his two children, son Greysun Baker (born in 2009) and daughter Boheme Baker (born in 2015), both from his previous marriage to former ESPN reporter Brienne Pedigo, his second wife. ARTICLE: Mishael Morgan Back to ‘The Young and the Restless’
In an Instagram Reel posted yesterday, Mishael Morgan revealed that she’ll soon be back on “The Young and the Restless,” where she’ll appear again as Amanda Sinclair, the role that won her a Daytime Emmy Award for Outstanding Lead Actress in a Drama Series in 2022. In the short clip, Morgan is seen looking over her character’s wardrobe as she smiles and waves to the camera as the song “…Ready for It?” by Taylor Swift plays, overlaying the video. In the post caption, Morgan wrote, “Guess who’s popping in for a visit!!!” At press time, it was unknown when Morgan would mark her return to the series nor for how long. However, based on Morgan’s post, don’t expect her to appear on screen for long; it’s just a “visit.” Since Morgan published her Instagram Reel, the post has been viewed more than 30,000 times and received over 2,500 likes and roughly 275 comments, including from some of Morgan’s co-stars at “The Young and the Restless” such as Tracey Bregman, Melissa Ordway and Lauralee Bell, among others. “Yay!!” cheered Bregman. “So happy to see your beautiful face today,” said Bell. “Love our Amanda/Abby dynamic,” commented Ordway. In late 2022, Morgan decided not to renew her contract with the daytime drama series so that she would have more free time to explore other career opportunities. Since then, she’s appeared on the soap on a recurring basis, with her last appearance being in March 2023. In addition to her return visit to “The Young and the Restless,” Morgan is also celebrating her film “Sway” making its premiere at the Pan-African Film Festival in Los Angeles next month. The film, which Morgan stars in and executive produced, follows a community leader (played by Emmanuel Kabongo) who has it all until his life spirals out of control within hours after his brother goes missing. Between being blackmailed by a strange woman and getting himself entangled in a murder, he’ll soon find out how far he will go to protect the ones he loves. Originally titled “Spiral,” “Sway” wrapped production in late April 2023 in Toronto, Canada, and was written by Charlie Hamilton, who also directed the film alongside Zach Ramelan. “The first film I ever executive produced premiers at the Pan-African Film Festival in LA on February 8th and 9th!!!! Hope to see you there!!!!” said Morgan about the movie on Instagram. “This was a true labour of love and I am so honoured to be on this journey with you @emmkab.” Note: The post Mishael Morgan Back to ‘The Young and the Restless’ appeared first on the Soap Opera Network website. BOLD: Could this be Sheila's daughter
Kate Schettler Is Not Playing That Diana On ‘The Bold And The Beautiful’ Despite fan speculation, actress Kate Schettler has not joined "The Bold and the Beautiful" as Diana, the youngest daughter of Sheila Carter (Kimberlin Brown).

ARTICLE: Kate Schettler Is Not Playing That Diana on ‘The Bold and the Beautiful’
Eagled-eyed fans of “The Bold and the Beautiful have been in a tizzy for the last couple of days, first with Kimberlin Brown (Sheila Carter) sharing an interesting video clip on her Instagram page on Friday, and then at the end of Monday’s episode, the weekly closing credits were shown with the full cast listed, including contract and recurring players. The name listed at the end of that list is where things got even more interesting. In Brown’s video, the actress is seen sitting down in her dressing room with a script in hand as she looks over what’s coming up on the show. Soon after reading, she drops the script on the desk with a “don’t know what to think”-like expression on her face, leading her to place both hands over her forehead. The song “…Ready For It?” by Taylor Swift overlays the video. Before placing the script down, one of the character names shown on the front page of the script is that of someone named “Diana.” What’s the connection, you might ask? Well, in the aforementioned closing credits, a character named “Diana” was shown and attributed to singer and actress Kate Schettler, whose previous TV credits include an under-five appearance on “General Hospital” last year as a “helpful nurse” and the role of Nora in the Lifetime TV movie “Secret Society of Lies,” where she played a mother investigating those who are attacking female students at a school, including her character’s daughter. Schettler’s other credits include appearances in at least five other TV shows since 2016, among other roles. Since Brown’s posting included the name “Diana” and the show’s credits listed Schettler as playing a character named “Diana,” one would assume that the two are connected, especially when considering Brown’s famous villain once birthed a daughter whom she named Diana Carter from an encounter she had with Massimo Marone (played by the late Joseph Mascolo). Turns out, you’d be wrong. Sources tell Soap Opera Network that Schettler is appearing on the daytime drama series as “Diana,” but the character is that of a realtor working with Bill Spencer (Don Diamont) for the Malibu beach house, which was recently vacated by Bill’s son, Wyatt (Darin Brooks), who in-story left Los Angeles for grander pastures. So, there you have it! For now, at least, the Diana we’ll soon see on screen, as played by Schettler, is not the same Diana online chatter seems to be clamoring for. Check out Brown’s Instagram post below. Note: The post Kate Schettler Is Not Playing That Diana on ‘The Bold and the Beautiful’ appeared first on the Soap Opera Network website. Read More

GH: O’Connor/Van Etten OUT! Mulcahey/Korte IN!
The overwhelming reason soaps moved to hour-long formats is to cut back on costs to allow the network to get higher ad dollars for the more successful shows on the lineup. While I think 30-minute shows would work best in this day and age, that all depends on whether an international option is in place. Otherwise, it wouldn't be worth it. Most streaming shows are also full 30-minute shows or longer without commercials.

Will be sharing details shortly.

GH: O’Connor/Van Etten OUT! Mulcahey/Korte IN!
The Chew was canceled solely due to issues with the hosts (one opting not to return and the other accused of sexual harassment) and the then co-head of Disney TV wanting to (again) expand on Good Morning America with another hour despite the failure that was Good Afternoon America. As for The Revolution, its ratings were worse (among Total Viewers) than GMA3 or about the same as what GMA3 is getting now, but 12 years earlier. No way that thing could have lasted.

ARTICLE: Daytime Broadcast Ratings for the Week of January 15-19, 2024
January is off to a great start for daytime broadcast with most shows hitting new season highs among Total Viewers during the week of January 15-19, 2024, led by the CBS game show “The Price is Right” (4.338 million / 4.912 million), which added +236,000 and +258,000 viewers, respectively, for each of its half hours. Other series hitting season highs this week include “Let’s Make a Deal” (2.489 million / 2.858 million), “The View” (2.581 million), “General Hospital” (2.231 million), “GMA3: What You Need to Know” (1.612 million), “NBC News Daily” (1.439 million) and “The Talk” (1.433 million). Dan O’Connor, Chris Van Etten ABC For “General Hospital,” the daytime drama series was up week-to-week with +39,000 more viewers tuning in, marking the fourth consecutive week with gains among Total Viewers (+316,000 viewers overall). The news comes just a day after it was announced the series had let go of its co-head writers Chris Van Etten and Dan O’Connor, whose material only reappeared on screen starting with the Monday, December 18, 2023 episode. Patrick Mulcahey and Elizabeth Korte have been named the show’s new co-head writers. Van Etten and O’Connor’s material will air into March. For the week, “General Hospital” tied its series low in the rounded Women 18-49 (0.2 rating) demographic, marking its seventh consecutive week at a low. Despite “GMA3: What You Need to Know” leading the afternoon network news and talk shows among Total Viewers, “NBC News Daily” topped the all-important key women sales demographics, with a 0.19 rating in Women 18-49 and a 0.31 rating in Women 25-54. In fact, the NBC series attracted its second-largest audience ever among Total Viewers and is the only afternoon network broadcast series to see an increase vs. last season in the category. Season to date, “NBC News Daily” is up +195,000 viewers and has narrowed its gap vs. “GMA3” by +63%. Note: Total Viewers and Households for “TODAY 3rd Hour” and “TODAY with Hoda & Jenna” were unavailable at press time. Rankings in both categories are subject to change pending updates. What follows is a breakdown of how the daytime broadcast shows performed during the week of January 15-19, 2024 in Women 18-49 Rating, Women 25-54 Rating, Households and Total Viewers, including a look at their comparable performances in 2023, 2022, 2021 and 2020 (pre-pandemic), which provides readers with a clearer picture of how the shows are performing overall during a five-year period and/or the basis for an overall trend. UPDATED: The National Academy of Television Arts & Sciences has issued a formal statement on the matter, saying, “Consistent with the Trademark Policy engraved on the base of each statuette, NATAS has made arrangements with the producers of ‘General Hospital’ for the Academy’s safekeeping of Ms. Eddy’s statuette in her memory.” Soap Opera Network understands that part of the engraving on the base of each Emmy statuette indicates that it should be returned to the Academy in the event the recipient’s heir or successor in interest decides to sell it or dispose of it and that such persons shall be obligated to return the statuette to the Academy from which it was received. Therefore, the Academy would retain the statuette in storage in the memory of the recipient. EARLIER: Although there are no plans to take legal action at this time, the family of the late Sonya Eddy, who won a posthumous Daytime Emmy Award last month in the category of Outstanding Supporting Actress in a Daytime Drama Series for her role as Epiphany Johnson on “General Hospital,” is asking the National Academy of Television Arts & Sciences (NATAS) to intervene in their battle over who gets to keep the golden statue, reports TMZ. During the Friday, December 15 broadcast of “The 50th Annual Daytime Emmy Awards,” Tyler Ford, Eddy’s long-time producing partner and friend, accepted the late actor’s Emmy award nearly one year after she passed away after she experienced complications from a non-emergency surgery. In his speech, Ford said, “Accepting these flowers is bittersweet. I know that Sonya would only relish in the sweet. I want to thank Frank Valentini more than anything for being a faithful friend, and Disney/ABC and the cast and crew of ‘General Hospital’ for embracing her for 16 years. I want to thank the Academy for acknowledging her contribution and craft. “Sonya never aspired to be an actor, and when while her talent was undeniable, I’m sure that she is more overjoyed by being remembered for how she made people feel on-screen and off. Thank you.” According to TMZ, the family claims they were never told beforehand that Eddy would win the Emmy posthumously and that Ford allegedly told them he plans on keeping the trophy. In fact, the outlet notes the family is “pissed it wasn’t given to them in the first place.” Currently, the family is waiting to hear back from the Television Academy, per TMZ, which incorrectly labeled the governing body behind the Daytime Emmys in its report – NATAS oversees the Daytime Emmys while the Television Academy handles the Primetime Emmys. Citing Sonya’s younger brother, Robbie Eddy, who says the family isn’t looking to take legal action against Tyler or the Academy because they wouldn’t want to tarnish Sonya’s memory with a lawsuit. Still, they at least hope Ford does the “right thing” by handing over the Emmy to the family, particularly their 84-year-old mother, who allegedly “sponsored Sonya’s Hollywood career.” One caveat to all of this is that Sonya Eddy was alleged to have been estranged from some of her family members before she died, including not “getting along with her brother because they were fighting over who was going to provide and care for their mom, who has Alzheimer’s and dementia.” Despite all of that, Robbie says they were working on repairing their relationship before his sister’s death. Circling back on the family indicating they were not informed beforehand of Eddy’s win, to be clear, that’s because award winners are unknown to the public, including those in attendance, until the award is presented during the ceremony. For the Daytime Emmy Awards, more than 1,000 peer professionals from across the television industry took part as judges, with confidential ballots tabulated by the independent accounting firm of Lutz & Carr, LLP. ARTICLE: WWE ‘Raw’ Moving to Netflix Starting in January 2025, Series Exiting Linear Television After 31 Years
For the first time since the program was launched 31 years ago, WWE’s “Raw” (aka “Monday Night Raw”) will no longer be available to watch on linear television starting in January 2025. WWE/Netflix On Tuesday, it was announced that Netflix had signed a long-term deal with the WWE, part of TKO Group Holdings, Inc., wherein the streamer will become the exclusive home of the sports entertainment series in the U.S., Canada, U.K. and Latin America, among other territories, with additional countries and regions to be added over time. In addition to landing “Raw,” the world’s leading entertainment service will also become the home for all WWE shows and specials outside the U.S. as available, inclusive of “Raw” and WWE’s other weekly shows – “SmackDown” and “NXT” – as well as the company’s Premium Live Events, including WrestleMania, SummerSlam and Royal Rumble. WWE’s award-winning documentaries, original series and forthcoming projects will also be available on Netflix internationally beginning in 2025. (Peacock holds domestic rights through 2026.) “This deal is transformative,” said TKO President and COO Mark Shapiro. “It marries the can’t-miss WWE product with Netflix’s extraordinary global reach and locks in significant and predictable economics for many years. Our partnership fundamentally alters and strengthens the media landscape, dramatically expands the reach of WWE, and brings weekly live appointment viewing to Netflix.” “We are excited to have WWE Raw, with its huge and passionate multigenerational fan base, on Netflix,” said Netflix Chief Content Officer, Bela Bajaria. “By combining our reach, recommendations, and fandom with WWE, we’ll be able to deliver more joy and value for their audiences and our members. Raw is the best of sports entertainment, blending great characters and storytelling with live action 52 weeks a year and we’re thrilled to be in this long-term partnership with WWE.” “In its relatively short history, Netflix has engineered a phenomenal track record for storytelling,” said Nick Khan, WWE President. “We believe Netflix, as one of the world’s leading entertainment brands, is the ideal long-term home for Raw’s live, loyal, and ever-growing fan base.” Per Deadline, the deal between the WWE and Netflix for “Raw” is said to be worth more than $5 billion which will keep the series on the streamer for at least 10 years. In September, the WWE extended its domestic media rights deal with NBCUniversal that will see “SmackDown” leaving its current home on FOX starting in October 2024 and moving to USA Network through a five-year agreement. At the time, a deal for “Raw” had not been announced, but several content partners were circling bids for the top-rated series. “SmackDown” WWE As for “NXT,” that show is heading to The CW starting in October 2024 under a five-year deal between the fifth-ranked English language broadcaster and the WWE. The series had been airing on USA Network. According to the WWE, “Raw” has produced 1,600 episodes to date and has become synonymous with sports entertainment. Since its debut in 1993, “Raw” has delivered action, compelling drama and unmatched athleticism – 52 weeks a year. Blending scripted content with unpredictable live entertainment, the three-hour show has helped launch the careers of such stars as Dwayne “The Rock” Johnson, “Stone Cold” Steve Austin, Triple H, John Cena, Roman Reigns, Bianca Belair and Charlotte Flair. Currently the No. 1 show on USA Network, where it brings in 17.5 million unique viewers over the course of the year, “Raw” is one of television’s best-performing programs in the key Adults 18-49 sales demographic. In fact, “Raw” trends on X (formerly Twitter) 52 weeks a year during each new episode’s live broadcast. The WWE has over one billion followers across its social platforms. ARTICLE: Deidre Hall Gives Insight on Bill Hayes, the Beloved 98-Year-Old ‘Days of our Lives’ Star Who Passed Away Earlier This Month
On her official Instagram page, “Days of our Lives” star Deidre Hall (Marlena Evans) shared a heartwarming story about the late Bill Hayes, who played Doug Williams on the daytime drama series since 1970 and sadly passed away on Friday, January 12 at 98 years old. Hayes was the real-life husband of on-screen partner Susan Seaforth Hayes (Julie Williams). In Hall’s message, she said, “When I say Bill & Susan Hayes, I think of the phrase with no separation between the words. If written, it would appear as Billandsusanhayes. “I had the opportunity to see them up close and unguarded due to our professional and personal relationship. During any significant moment or event, it was each other’s eyes they sought out to share the experience. It could not be fully enjoyed until it was shared.” Bill Hayes, Susan Seaforth Hayes (“Days of our Lives”) XJJohnson/JPI Studios Providing some insight into Bill Hayes’s personal life, including his and Susan’s dedication to the church, Hall noted, “Their deep and abiding faith made them pillars in their church community. Bill and Susan’s belief included action, not just providing emotional and substantive support. After 50 years of lending his voice to the Chancel Choir, he was honored by the church with the retirement of his choir robe and a permanent plaque that reads: ‘The Bill Hayes Chancel Choir Loft.’ “Whether sharing tales of their large family, their extensive travels, or plays made by their oft-disappointing Dodgers, they built on each other’s stories until a rich and entertaining visual was achieved.” You can read Hall’s Instagram full message below. ARTICLE: Patrick Mulcahey and Elizabeth Korte Named New Co-Head Writers at ‘General Hospital’, Replacing Outgoing Writers Chris Van Etten and Dan O’Connor
Depending on the specific date in March (unknown at this time), it's expected Mulcahey and Korte's material would begin the next day, which would likely be in March, too. But again, it all depends on the specific date in March we're talking about. We'll soon find out.
-
GH: O’Connor/Van Etten OUT! Mulcahey/Korte IN!
Nope. If they hired him, they'd definitely have a lawsuit on their hands from the WGA for replacing writers shortly after a sanctioned strike by the guild vs. studios with a fi-core writer. Oh, I'm just saying that I'm just happy it isn't someone currently at DAYS (no offense to that show or its writers), and it's not someone brought out of retirement who would have made the show even darker, albeit that's what goes for quality these days in Netflix/streaming shows.

GH: O’Connor/Van Etten OUT! Mulcahey/Korte IN!
Better than I expected, honestly. At least it isn't certain *ahem* peeps I feared it would be.

GH: O’Connor/Van Etten OUT! Mulcahey/Korte IN!
Mulcahey has always been my favorite writer. His Carly with Sarah Brown was the pinnacle of what I tuned into GH for.

ARTICLE: Patrick Mulcahey and Elizabeth Korte Named New Co-Head Writers at ‘General Hospital’, Replacing Outgoing Writers Chris Van Etten and Dan O’Connor
ABC is going in a different direction with “General Hospital,” it was announced on Monday. Patrick Mulcahey is returning to the fold as the show’s new co-head writer working alongside veteran writer Elizabeth Korte, who has been with the show since 1994 and has held various positions ever since, including her previous position as script editor and historian. Mulcahey and Korte are replacing co-head writers Chris Van Etten and Dan O’Connor, whose scripts will air into March. In mid-December, immediately following the show breaking its own record with 16 wins for Outstanding Daytime Drama Series during “The 50th Annual Daytime Emmy Awards,” Nathan Varni, the current series executive in charge of the show’s production who handles matters from the network level, made note that despite the show winning awards, his goal for the new year was to win back “lapsed viewers.” In a post on X (formerly Twitter), Varni said, “We have a lot of work to do but we’re all ready to work hard for YOU!” Varni’s post received approximately 145,000 views since it was published last month. Following the months-long writer’s strike that ended in late September, Van Etten and O’Connor’s names reappeared in the show’s credits starting with the Monday, December 18, 2023 episode. One week later, we reported the series had hit a new season low among Total Viewers, with just 1.915 million people tuning in. This marked the fifth time overall the series had gone below the two million viewers mark this season, but the first with material written by the show’s regular writers. Since then, the show has seen three consecutive weeks of growth, each above the two million viewer mark. In fact, during the week of January 8-12, 2024, the most recent week in which Nielsen data is available, “General Hospital” hit a new season high with 2.192 million viewers tuned in, marking the third consecutive week of gains among Total Viewers which amounted to the show adding +277,000 viewers over the same three week period. That said, the Women 18-49 and Women 25-54 sales demographics are what sell ad rates for daytime programming and keep the lights on. Among Women 18-49, “General Hospital” is experiencing its worst season ever, with just a 0.2 rating in the demo. During the week of January 8-12, 2024, the show marked its sixth consecutive week where it tied its series low. The other two remaining network soaps – “The Young and the Restless” and “The Bold and the Beautiful” – also hit or are tying their series low in the demo, each with a 0.3 rating. In the case of “The Bold and the Beautiful,” this is the show’s 28th straight week tying its series low. Van Etten had been the co-head writer of “General Hospital” since October 2017, replacing Jean Passanante, who decided to retire after 25 years working as a writer. Van Etten worked alongside the show’s remaining co-head writer, Shelly Altman, through much of 2019 until she also retired, leaving the door open for O’Connor to replace her. O’Connor began his tenure as co-head writer in November 2019. Prior to head writing at “General Hospital,” Van Etten had been a breakdown writer at the show since May 2012, joining the writing staff, which was at the time led by former “One Life to Live” head writer Ron Carlivati (now at “Days of our Lives”). At “One Life to Live,” Van Etten was the assistant to the show’s executive producer, Frank Valentini, from 2001-2003 before he changed positions and became a writer’s associate. Soon after, he was promoted to the position of continuity supervisor before being named an associate head writer in August 2005. By November 2006, Van Etten had become a breakdown writer at the New York-based daytime drama series. Also getting his start in daytime at “One Life to Live,” O’Connor was a writer’s associate from 2007-2011. Like Van Etten, O’Connor later joined Carlivati’s writing team at “General Hospital” in 2013, where he held the dual role of associate head writer and breakdown writer before being named co-head writer. The last time “General Hospital” won the Daytime Emmy Award for Outstanding Writing Team for a Daytime Drama Series was in 2009 under the show’s then-head writer Robert Guza, Jr., whom both Mulcahey and Korte worked under throughout the latter part of the 1990s. Mulcahey’s writing career began in 1979 as a scriptwriter for the series “Texas.” He joined the writing team of “The Bold and the Beautiful” in 2005 and worked as a scriptwriter and story consultant there until 2019.
