I think Sergey was a musician rather than a ballet dancer.
I won't say there is nothing that a show can do to drive me away. I have definitely dropped series that became a chore. But I can be very much a completist and even though I went through many periods of frustration, I stuck with it through the finale probably because Cass and Felicia, Donna and Vicky and Marley, and the Cory family were still there.
I liked Cass and Frankie together and I was unhappy when they killed Frankie off but I didn't give up.
I preferred Cali Timmins' Paulina to Judi Evans' but that wouldn't have been enough to drive me away.
I didn't mind the transition from Anne Heche to Jensen Buchanan. On the one hand I was happy to see Ellen Wheeler back as Marley but on the other it was stupid for the twins not to be identical and they didn't handle Marley's interactions with Jake well.
All of this depends very much on personal taste and to some degree on when you started watching. For me, Jake started as a good guy and so even after he became a villain the origin of his relationship with Victoria did mitigate some (but not all) of his later behaviour for me.
On the flip side, John Hudson, who was introduced clumsily, later won me over when they gave him more complexity to work with and I was glad they abandoned the poorly-constructed rape history they had started him off with.
Terrific summary. Sergei was at least different from what they had tried before for all the reasons you state.
