Wow Days did better than both OLTL and AMC on Friday. And that was OLTL's best episode of the week and the day that so many tuned in to watch the tornado. That is surprising that Days was able to do that, and the episode was not the best of the week for me on Days. OLTL really popped that day - best OLTL episode in a long time.

When I look at 18-49 views, it's usually about 25-30% of total views. Do the other 70% really not count? You would think that it would be a greater % of the audience if the networks obsess about it so much.

I notice ATWT had more viewers on Monday at a 2.4 rating than they had with their 2.5 days.

All that proves is that ABC was willing to cut its losses sooner because their soaps in general have higher ratings than NBC's and bec ause ABC had 4 soaps instead of NBC's measly two. They still had a full complement of daytime programming.

That doesn't prove that NBC wasn't stupid NOT to cancel Days. In fact, considering that NBC has been LOSING money due to Passions and Days underperforming and not meeting the ratings needed for their ad rates, from a business point of view NBC was silly not to have cancelled Passions. In fact, if they really have removed Passions from Sci-Fi, I'd be fearing for the soap. Since NBC owns Sci-Fi that was their way of recouping their losses on Passions. If they've given up that avenue, then economically Passions is on very, very, VERY shakey grounds.

ETA: Actually the whole set-up about demos mattering more than households is falling apart. There was an article recently where ABC daytime said outright that they no longer counted demos as more important than overall ratings. It's the overall rating that matters to them. There have been similar articles on the media front. And the head of CBS (which was head of the WB) said exactly that recently when explaining why the WB (whose business plan was predicated on those demos) was folding up shop this fall and combining with UPN in the hopes of getting overall ratings because the demos weren't sustaining the shows adequately to be financially viable any longer.

Noticeably, however, OLTL ranked higher than Days every day that week except Friday and OLTL's highest rating that week was higher than ANY rating Days posted that week (including Days' Friday rating).

NBC ain't going to replace Passions and Days with talk shows. You are not going to a network run talk show like The View on NBC. You make more money syndicating your talk shows and allowing any affiliate to pick them up and letting them air when they want them to air. It's like people who thought Megan Mullally's show was going to replace Passions. The rights to air her show was sold to stations own by Viacom which we all know is owned by CBS. That means that Megan's show will air on CBS affiliates in addition to NBC ones.. Not to mention, didn't Fox based Ryan Secret's show go up against the 2 o'clock soaps? We know what happen there. If NBC does anything, it will probably turn control over to the affiliates.

Shipper, according to recent articles posted here and found in various places CBS is the only one that is really making money with their daytime lineups right now. All of them are having a hard time and every network is having to offer free advertising to make up to the advertisers for losses during daytime programming. CBS is having to give them too but they are having to do it less than the other 2 networks.

I know that NBC's ratings are lower than the other 2 but none of the 3 are doing great. That is the reason you see such tight budgets in daytime. According to what is published it seems GL and OLTL must have the tightest budgest because they are the ones who have the most trouble at negotiation time for actors contracts. OLTL definitely seems to have more trouble than the other 2 ABC shows.

It just seems that the whole genre is in big danger. Hopefully some day and hopefully soon the ratings will at least get better overall for all shows.

And as to this last weeks ratings - you are right about OLTL the rest of the week but according to Rugrats analysis Days beat OLTL on Friday. They had the same HH rating but DAys had more viewers on Friday. OLTL did beat them all the other days but OLTL was the 5th show on Friday.

I am not saying that the talk shows will be NBC produced shows - they will most likely be syndicated shows. It was reported back when Days and Passions were at risk before that the shows would be replaced by talk shows. That is when they stated that they were cheaper than soaps. The other option is game shows which they also stated were cheaper than soaps. But look how long it has been since a network has aired a new game show.

NBC is not going to cancel the 2 soaps and create 2 new ones. That would be stupid. NBC has not had a successful new soap since Santa Barbara - the last 3 failed miserably (Passions, Sunset Beach and Generations). Passions has had the best demos of the three and that is the reason it has lasted as long as it has. Also the fact they only have 2 shows. If it weren't for that Passions would have been gone a long time ago. NBC has had cancellation fever for years now. They didn't even give Generations time to even catch on before they got rid of it. Both Santa Barbara and Sunset Beach could have rebounded but they weren't given the chance that Passions has been given. And Santa Barbara was an Emmy darling.

So yes you are looking at talk shows or possibly game shows. I don't think there is much chance of a new soap coming to daytime anytime soon.

I'm confused about something here. How can we really blame "Days" current storylines for its ratings when these Nielsens ONLY reflect that of "live" TV viewing. Millions more probably tape the soaps but that figure isn't given because they also time shift their shows and zap out the commercials (rendering them ineligible for Nielsen's count, which is chiefly used for determining ad rates). So really, don't these figures just suggest that the "live" viewers tuned out for the Hatrick and Bollie phuckfests? Who knows, perhaps tapers, such as I, enjoyed the show. (And I have enjoyed "Days" immensely.)

On an unrelated note, I was wondering why Patrick all of a sudden went evil (working for Alex now, eh? ) I think this one looks like a rewrite. ;)

Then again, I believe (and hope) that Patrick's faking viewers once again when the good guy/bad guy routine. He may have made a deal with Alex just to thwart ALEX. We'll see.

Except for the P&G soaps, all the soaps are down by huge numbers in the 18-49 demo, not just DAYS, and GL and ATWT have lousy demos anyway. If NBC doesn't renew DAYS, I still say that CBS will buy it. Even B&B is in bad shape with viewers who aren't eligible for AARP membership.

I agree. Taping and Soapnet should be taken in account. Every soap on soapnet has seen a drop of some sort. Y&R had some 3.9's in their dailies thieir first week on there so I am interested in seeing how soapnet affects them. Everyone I talk to says they watch Days on soapnet so I think that hurts their ratings. Not making excuses just an observation.

As for Patrick, he always has had a dark side. We knew he was a con artist and that he came to Salem working for Tony and was instructed to target Jennifer. He got so close to Jennifer, Billie, and Hope that he could not hurt them so he turned on Tony and saved them all on the island. Since then he has been good two shoes but the dark/con artist side has always been there and now we are seeing it. He may have even lied about the Alma thing to. Who knows? I never really bought Patrick as a good guy-I bought him as man with a dark side who has changed due to being around good women. As soon as money is floated in front of him or blackmail becomes a part of the picture he reverts back to con artist again. It's definitely not a rewrite though.

Phoenix, I agree that Pat has always had a dark side to him, but I don't agree that he would go so far as kill someone, as it seems he's agreed to do for Alex. I say it smells like a possible rewrite due to the drop in ratings, which some blame in part on the Bo/Hope split. I think Patrick and Hope would have been written a viable couple and up until last week, we saw that. Notice how many times he tried to keep Bo and Hope TOGETHER? not very typical for a guy who just 'made a deal with the devil' to hold onto Hope, no? So here's the next solution: a rewrite. Make Pat's bad side come out again by having him team up with Alex--a confirmed baddie. The fact that he's teamed up wth Alex to FIGHT the Bo/hope reunion makes him immediately 'bad' and takes away the viability that Hatrick were developing. And I'm glad you mentioned Alma, Phoenix, because that wasn't a lie. Mimi mentioned to Shawn just last week how much Patrick loved Alma--again, JER's original way to soften him and make him a viable leading man.

I still think it's a rewrite for all these reasons, lol.

It's not a bad rewrite (after all, we may not get Hatrick for a year now and instead, just a few months or so), but I think it's an obvious one.

I won't say its a rewrite until I see him actually try to kill someone. After all, Tony wanted him to on the Island with the volcano and he agreed to do it until the last minute. Plus, let's remember Alex offered him Hope this time and is blackmailing him so that may have made him snap. Corday did preview this in SOD so if they rewrite it they did it awhile back and the ratings crashed this week so I am not sure if they rewrote it in response to ratings. I don't think he lied about loving Alma. I do think he lied about how she died somehow-perhaps she died during one of his cons or something? I just think there is more to the Alma thing and to the Patrick thing.

Just as I stated last week and as someone mentioned a few posts up, networks are looking more at the households and less at the demos. Households matter more now. And since CBS has overall higher households, I doubt they would add Days. It's been dropping now and soon it could go below GL.

Yep. The concept of 18-49 demo was because the networks felt this is the group that can be influenced to buy things. After 50, people are not flexible in their buying habits. That has been proved to be wrong. Not only are people living longer, but they are much more flexible now to try new brands of products at all ages. CBS is obviously doing well as the network with the most viewers in daytime and primetime.

CBS has 3 of their 4 soaps sitting in last place with a 1.0 for 18-34, while a struggling DAYS still whoops them with a 1.7. As a purely dollars and cents decision, a network will not pass up an opportunity to considerably to drop the age of their average viewer. Besides, DAYS' missing viewers are enraged the writing of the show, the actors and characters that they love are still here. Replacing JER with a better writer could solve DAYS woes in a short order.

    • Actors doing this is pretty common. I used to work for a company that produced a very successful sitcom back in the 70s. Actors who were guest stars on the show would ask to be provided tapes of their episodes. I assume they do it for a variety of reasons, i.e. to create a reel of their best work. I know of some soap actors who have uploaded saved work to YT. One is Ariana Muenker, who played Christine Valere on GL. She was uploading scenes from her many soap roles a few months back. Unfortunately, it looks like either she or YT took the channel down. Sharon Gabet and Mark Arnold help the EON YT channel by providing saved episodes. Along with EON eps, Arnold shared a guest stint he did on GL. Those episodes are really interesting because they involve the introduction of Nola's character, which was tied to the Roger storyline. When he came back after faking his death, he hid out at the boarding house. Nola being a snoop figured out something was fishy with him. She ended up helping the police. Very worth seeking out. I don't think anyone else has those episodes.  Makes you wonder if there's more out there than we know of because actors don't want to be bothered to run a YT channel. Can't blame them because it's a lot of trouble, but if only... I agree. While Lucci definitely used her fame from the show to build her brand and get work outside of AMC, Erica was always part of an ensemble. Yeah, she got a couple of whacky stories (like the "unabortion") but she never took over to the detriment of other actors and stories.
    • It must have been sometime in the early 80's. VI said he first heard about Marj Dusay's talent from CH. Hickland worked with her on Capitol.
    • Not having watched AMC was one of the reasons I hesitated to make the comparison, tbf. It's odd--I feel like I could argue Cassie, Olivia, Harley and Dinah suffocated the show along with Reva the last five years.
    • Laurie and Lance accompany Leslie to her Denver concert and she relies me on Lance for support.Unbeknownst to Leslie, Brad has had the operator make a special connection to the concert hall so he can hear her concert. The Maestro, realizing Leslie’s emotional torment over her failing marriage, tries to persuade her to tell Brad about the baby, and when she refuses, he writes a letter to Brad betraying Leslie’s confidence. After another fight with her mother about how learning about her parentage has upset her life, Laurie confides to Leslie that she feels cut off, outside. Stuart overhears this conversation, and Leslie has to tell him the whole story. She tries to explain fairly how Jennifer had left Stuart and actually only spent one night with Bruce, and faced the truth about Laurie only when she was forced to. Stuart is livid over this |betrayal and wants to confront his wife ‘now, but her doctor calls. Her one-year mastectomy checkup was fine, but he’s discovered irregularities in her cardiogram and doesn’t want her under any stress until further tests can be made. Stuart assures Leslie he won’t tell her mother he knows about Laurie until he can do it calmly, and doesn’t tell his daughter about the cardiogram.  When Chris continues to receive obscene calls, Snapper goes straight to the Beckers’. Ron insists he was home with Nancy, and she corroborates this. When she steps between an advancing Snapper and her husband, screaming, “We don’t have a telephone. He couldn't have called Chris,” Snapper finally has to believe her, and he leaves. But moments later Karen tells Nancy that Daddy went out while Mommy was in the shower. Ron insists it was just a few moments, for cigarettes. Nancy lets it pass, but the next morning finds a whole carton of cigarettes in a drawer  and asks why he went out. Ron coldly tells her she’d  better pull herself together, she’s letting this thing with Chris make her a little insane. Nancy ponders telling Chris but decides that all Chris would do is  badmouth Ron again, and she and Karen have no one but Ron and can’t leave him. When a telephone-installation man arrives with their new phone, Nancy asks him not to put it in. But Ron arrives and orders the installation made, telling Nancy she’s trying to run his life, as his mother did. When Nancy tries to call Chris, Ron frighteningly tells Nancy he’s done  everything they said he did, but it’s all her fault, as she never gave him what he needed. When he informs her he’s taking Karen away from her before she can ruin her, Nancy collapses in a catatonic state. Ron then calmly calls the hospital and requests help for his wife, “Fran Jackson,” who has had a breakdown.  Laurie, seeing the extent to which Vanessa will go to keep Lance to herself, warns Lance that his mother’s possessive feelings are unhealthy. Lance suggests Vanessa will consider Leslie a threat also when he learns that Les and Brad are divorcing and things will get easier. As soon as the hospital attendants leave with Nancy, Ron dials Legal Aid and has Karen tell Chris she’s all alone. Stopping only to leave a message for Snapper about where she’s going, Chris rushes to the Beckers’ apartment, only to realize that Ron’s tricked her. Ron sends Karen out of the room and, after expressing his hatred for all women, tells Chris he’s going to prove to her he’s a man. But Karen wanders back in as he has Chris pinned to the wall, and Ron’s mind snaps when he realizes his daughter has seen his perverted side. After smashing the wall mirror, he runs out, and Greg, terrified at learning where Chris is, arrives to find her comforting Karen. Chris takes Karen home, and after several days of fruitless searching for Nancy, she applies for temporary guardianship of Karen. Peggy and Jack set a New Years Eve wedding date, but Stuart is terribly upset to realize how irrational and incomplete Peggy’s plans are. When she suddenly makes all pertinent decisions in the space of a half-hour, Stuart tells Jack this doesn’t indicate certainty, but rather proves his point—she’s just trying to convince herself that the rape didn’t affect hers and it did. A chance remark by Stuart shocks Laurie into realizing he knows she’s not his natural daughter. When she hysterically screams out her alienation and her innate feeling that she was always 'different' he assures her with tears in his eyes that since they really love each other sincerely, it makes no difference; she’ll always be his daughter. Stuart explains that Jen still doesn’t know he has learned the truth, and he would like it to continue that way. In helping Brad pay his bills, Laurie finds Maestro Fausch’s letter and tells Brad that Leslie is pregnant. Ironically, to get to him with this news, she had to get |away from Leslie, and used a meeting with Lance as an excuse. When ‘Lance arrives soon after, he’s angry that Laurie lied, and she later has to explain that she has been helping Brad. Understanding her motives, — Lance agrees that she should continue to press him to |reconcile with Leslie. Brad, however, still won’t reconsider—in fact, the news makes him even more resolute. But Vanessa has had Laurie followed, and hits Leslie with a double blow. She gives her the report saying this proves her sister is involved with her husband, and then assures Leslie that Lance loves her, — not Laurie. Badly confused and hurt, Leslie lashes out by kissing Lance while he sits with her at the piano. Leslie then waits at the apartment for Laurie, and when she arrives, she bitterly accuses her of having an affair with Brad. Laurie angrily assures Leslie she  was with Brad with Lance’s full knowledge and that Leslie’s anger means she still loves Brad. She then explains to Leslie that Brad left her because he’s blind. In shock, Leslie rushes home to confront Brad, furiously berating him for treating her like a child who cannot decide for herself. But Brad, even with Leslie now aware of the situation, refuses to reconcile with her. When Leslie tells Laurie how unreasonable Brad has been, Laurie suggests that Leslie stop seeing everything from her own angle only.
    • In regards to the Reva vs Erica discussions... I think there was one main difference between the two characters.... Erica never took over/ate up airtime on All My Children.  While she was a larger than life character, she never took over the show and there were times she was even supporting and not the lead.... while Reva basically suffocated Guiding Light in the later years with her presence.
    • That was such a missed opportunity, especially with May sweeps.  And, it would’ve been a much better story for Naomi/Jacob than whatever’s going on with June
    • https://www.hulu.com/hub/tv/collections/9979 Amazed! But loving it. What this shows is GH Hulu out of top 15, GH is #2 & this was Saturday. Are we happy campers? Yes, at least for the moment, you bet we are.
    • I forget his name but Tori Spelling and Jennie Garth had the EP on after they didn't understand the 60s flashback episode due to the lack of original music. He felt that was one of his strongest episodes so he came on to explain to them just how much the music changes hurt the series. Basically, they only allowed him to pick a selection of episodes he felt the music was vital and other than that they didn't bother to save the music.  They kept music for prom and things like the Color Me Badd episode and for most of the musical acts but any music you loved from the opening of the show or just music played in random scenes was cut.  I know there are also some scenes cut but I don't know too much about that. The most glaring one was Clare's final scene being cut which is obviously a huge problem for a character who'd been around for so long. Overall I was able to enjoy my rewatch using the DVDs but without all of the original music it isn't nearly as good a show.
    • Too many returns, that's when you know a show has run out of ideas and doesn't care anymore.  Zoe annoyed the sh!t out of me most times, but the Kat/Zoe storyline will always be iconic and close to my heart (that's the era I first started following the show in near real-time), and probably the only storyline in 21st century EastEnders that had long-term value for the characters involved during their initial run together. However, after all this time and the writing choice that Zoe never wants to see Kat again, I think that ship has sailed and I don't know that it makes sense to revisit it at this point.
    • Former EastEnders star Michelle Ryan is reprising her role as Zoe Slater on the BBC soap following an absence of over 20 years.  It’s been reported that Zoe will return to Albert Square later this year and that she’ll take centre stage in a dramatic new storyline involving her family.  The news comes amidst news of other big returns, which include Max Branning (Jake Wood), Tanya Cross (Jo Joyner), Shirley Carter (Linda Henry) and Ben Mitchell (Max Bowden), who will also be back in Walford later in the year.
