ABC pulls “Jimmy Kimmel Live” from air indefinitely following host's Charlie Kirk comments

I could be wrong, but if I had to wager I'd bet he is offered at least a 1 year renewal unless Kimmel goes scorched earth. I don't expect that to happen, as by all accounts both sides were professional during negotiations. Who knows if he agrees or not.

Disney could sell ABC, but if they hold on to it I doubt they want to be perceived as fully capitulating to Sinclair & Nexstar. The financials for Kimmel aren't as dire as Colbert's show as both he and Fallon are far ahead of Colbert on digital views & monetization. ABC does have more leverage than usual during the 26-27 season, as it's airing the Super Bowl. Not to mention the mid-terms.

Relations with the Hollywood community is another consideration. Kimmel has also been the face of the network, hosting the Oscars and other events.

You bring up good points but Kimmel will not lay off Trump. He has been obessed with Trump and he may be good for awhile but Kimmel is not going to apologize or change his behavior and I am not saying he should. Network faces can be replaced. Oscars host can be replaced. A 1 year extension would be the best Kimmel would get.

I agree - I'm also not sure if ABC have any *real* concrete plans on what to do with their late night shows or what to replace them with when the time comes. I suspect they'll want to see what happens to Colbert's slot once he vacates. At this point they'll likely keep Kimmel for a while yet, though I'm pretty sure that in the long-run it's going to be a different format for these late night talkshows (I'm guessing they'll end up leaning hard into podcast-y format to begin with to try and expand their digital presence).

Sure. And people were cheering his cancelation just yesterday and  announcing it like they won some award. Always remember. He who laughs last, laughs best. So only time will tell where Jimmy is going to be in one year... Or two... Or five.

The fact is Disney bowed down to public backlash. They were losing millions of dollars. That's what's key here. It shows us we should never take this kind of censorship lightly and we should always do whatever we can to oppose it. It's one win against dictatorship.

They laughed way too early. Now the joke is on them.

I use the word obsess to make my point and you all made it. Late night TV is not supposed to be all political commentary and news. It is supposed to be entertainment, guest interviews and music. When a late night host has to provide political commentary daily -- it deviates from the purpose of the show. And yes ABC allowed Kimmel to do it. 

 

Did Johnny Carson do that? No. He got 9 to 10 million viewers a night. Kimmel gets at best 1.5 million. My point is Carson was the King and provded comedic relief. Kimmel not so much.

Late night TV never was so political until Trump was elected. Trump moved the needle and not for the better.

 

Honestly I cannot believe Kimmel lasted this long on ABC but that is not my call. I am glas he is back..let the right explode because soon the left will explode back.

Or we just disagree with you about what late night has been forced to do for over a decade. Even before Trump. It began with The Daily Show in the 2000s and everyone began following the lead. Even before that Leno was making Monica Lewinsky jokes for way too long.

You may not like him, but Kimmel is popular and has been for a long time. If he wasn't there would not have been a huge normie audience backlash/boycott, and Disney would not have panicked.

That is your opinion.  It's not an objective fact about what late night is "supposed to be".

Late night and politics has been intertwined for eons. Even "safe" Johnny Carson would tell some political zingers.

Hell, Bill Clinton and his saxophone cemented his campaign on late-night TV.

So to claim that late night should not be about politics...well, then, late night would cease existence. The right may not like the Trump criticism, but it is NOT - as much as Trump wishes otherwise - illegal/un-Constitutional. On the other hand, the government via the FCC trying to silence dissent very much IS.
