ARTICLE: ‘General Hospital’ Alum Matt Cohen Joins ‘The Young And The Restless’ As New Law Enforcer In Genoa City

The casting spree at “The Young and the Restless” continues with the long-running drama series landing “General Hospital” alum Matt Cohen (ex-Griffin Munro), who will play the newly created role of Detective Burrow, who is tasked with investigating a major case involving several prominent players in Genoa City.

According to Entertainment Weekly, which first reported the news, Cohen began taping at the show’s Television City studio last week and will make his first appearance on the Thursday, October 16 episode.

Cohen’s casting comes as the show needed someone new to represent law enforcement in town following the July death of Phillip “Chance” Chancellor IV (Conner Floyd), who was murdered in cold blood during a confrontation with Carter (Vincent Stalba), Cane’s (Billy Flynn) assistant, while a majority of characters were held captive in Nice, France.

Appearing on “General Hospital” from 2016-2019 as Dr. Griffin Munro, Cohen’s credits include roles on “90210,” “The Client List,” “Criminal Minds: Beyond Borders,” “Supernatural,” “How to Get Away with Murder” and “The O.C.,” among others. For three seasons, Cohen portrayed Aiden Dennison in the teen drama series “South of Nowhere,” which aired on The N, an overnight programming block on cable network Noggin, from 2005-2008. The series also starred “The Bold and the Beautiful” alum Maeve Quinlan (ex-Megan Conley).

From 2019-2023, Cohen appeared as a correspondent for the syndicated entertainment news program “Entertainment Tonight.” Previously, he appeared as a guest co-host on “Extra.”

Cohen’s joining “The Young and the Restless” marks the fourth major casting announcement to come out of the 52-year-old drama series in recent days, which includes three former “General Hospital” actors who have previously worked with Michelle Stafford (Phyllis Summers), who appeared as Nina Reeves on the 62-year-old soap from 2014-2019.

Last week, the show announced it had hired former “Days of our Lives” star Tamara Braun (ex-Ava Vitali) to play the newly created role of Sienna Bacall, a woman who has “personal connections to several characters” in Genoa City. She began taping this week and is set to air later this fall. Braun previously appeared on “General Hospital” as Kim Nero from 2017-2019, and as Carly Corinthos from 2001-2005.

Earlier this week, the show cast another “Days of our Lives” alumLucas Adams (ex-Tripp Dalton), to play a recast Noah Newman, the eldest child of Nicholas Newman (Joshua Morrow) and Sharon Newman (Sharon Case). Adams will begin taping this month, and his first air date is also slated for sometime later this fall.

In addition to Adams and Braun, “The Young and the Restless” has also cast Roger Howarth, who is set to play a mystery role. Howarth previously appeared on “General Hospital” as multiple characters over a 12-year span, including as Franco Baldwin, who was once involved with Stafford’s Nina Reeves.

“I could not be happier to be posting this!! Not only because these two are extra extraordinary actors, but because they are my friends!!” commented Stafford in a post on Instagram, following news of Braun and Howarth’s casting. “Our show just got a little more bad ass. Just so you know, more surprises to come,” she continued, while using the official “Y&R” hashtag and the hashtag “Get Ready.”

Wow! Why so many hirings? JFP perhaps?

My guess is that this HAS to be tied to JFP.

Are all of these new hires on contract? Because the show got rid of 3 characters, but they were not all on contract. Someone else has to go.

It always comes back to her. YR desperately needs a shake up but she always makes the canvas seem unrecognizable.
