I have never really watched full episodes anyway, in recent...um...decades, and am just glad people are still putting up clips. If it's Q-adjacent or some of the moments with other characters like Lucas, Ric, Alexis, Trina, I am more likely to watch, and they do still manage some good scenes here and there. I wonder if I am luckier than if I was watching in full because in full these scenes would be about 5 minutes spread out between more of Sonny shouting robotically, Kristina's dead baby tour, and Joss playing Honey West.

GH is hardly top tier entertainment but I don’t know how much longer I can handle comments suggesting that BTG is the saving grace of daytime television. I don’t find a lot of it dissimilar from the complaints we’ve had about the writing, acting, pacing and production of every other soap the past 20 years. I genuinely think that the newness of it all is clouding people‘s judgment. But hey, that’s just me, let’s see how everyone feels six months from now!

Jane Elliot was fantastic today, she really knows how to deliver a biting remark to close out a scene and I have to hand it to the show, they’ve been writing some really good ones for her lately. Luckily she’s going up against Drew, who in a case of awful ham-fisted writing everyone in town hates with a passion despite his track record as community hero only up until 6 months ago, so there’s less chance we’ll be treated to a “funny” comeuppance for old harridan Tracy.

Laura and Lulu lamenting who Valentin could have been if he had only chosen another path was…demented. Have they not hated him for years? Didn’t he just decide to un-kidnap Lulu’s daughter only last week? What in the world is going on?

Please explain to me how Sonny went from “Okay Val, you’re free to go” to “I hope Brennan kills him”. You just had him at gunpoint! You are a mob boss who had your biggest opp at gunpoint in your house, you dumb slut. Kill him! “Oh no I’ll wait for Brennan to do it! I scared!”.

The fondness TPTB have for JPS and "Vanna" seem to cloud anything they write for Valentin.

That's why I do wonder if we will get a turnaround on Drew soon enough. I'm surprised they haven't yet, as they have been fine with killing other stories which could have had ready-made drama.

They're so lucky Jane was willing to come back. I'm glad they are least allowing Tracy to have some layers and not just be the shrill figure the 'good' characters jeer at.

Oh, I made my peace with that years ago.  I am not even sure I like Sonny anymore.  He is just like the toxic friend you defend even though you know they are awful.

I don't think BTG is much better than GH.  The acting certainly isn't for the most part.  There is a freshness and energy that BTG has that GH and other current soaps lack.   I feel like everyone working on BTG is passionate and excited about the show.   GH seems to just move along on factory settings just getting a show out every day.   I understand why everyone is gushing over BTG, but if I am just comparing episode to episode I think GH is more consistent daily.  Sometimes its consistently boring though.  Like you said, let's see how everyone feels in 6 months or a year.

This isn't really here nor there, but I remember dipping out of Passions after a week so BTG seems to be doing better than that lol.

Ava  had  money of her own before she ever met Nik. I want to know what happened to that money? Speaking of Esme, I continue to wonder why did they tell her they were going to let her go in 6 months time? Who gives that kind of lead time & why?

Yeah my post could have been more clear. It’s not like I swapped one out for the other. I see all the flaws with BTG, I have no rose colored glasses. The big difference for me is that at least they are not afraid to have organic conflict between characters, and not everybody is supposed to be genial. You can also see there are actual stories being crafted and beats being played, even at an accelerated pace. I don’t watch that show and immediately notice that a potential budget issue is why a story has just stopped and then reappears a month later.

But you watch let’s say Dani for a month, and Carly for the last decade +. And you can see that almost psychotic level of terrible impulse control and self destruction that brings others down too that Carly used to have left with the writing team that created her. Dani is much more like Carly used to be as far as upping the ante (not saying their backgrounds are similar at all).

There was plenty that did not work when Mulcahey was there. But the dialogue and work they were doing to have actual characters again made the show more interesting for me. We had natural conflict brewing with Jason and his kids, Valentin revealed, Ava with Nina and Alexis, Sonny and Anna/Laura. I’m not saying it was all going to end up in stories. But it was at least building up natural places to go so people in scenes had more to chew on than just regurgitating plot points.

Up until Mulcahey’s initial couple of months, I hadn’t watched a full episode in ages, but I was at least exposed to the whole show by watching on Hulu with my finger firmly over the FF button. When he got there the dialogue was so much stronger I wanted to see what better scripts would do for some of the duller characters (like Willow). And in the process they made me actually enjoy watching Nina for about 6 months. Which was a first.

Talking about PM is to me predictably a sad discussion. However, at least 2 things that he began continue and in a good way. Jason is not under Sonny's thumb as he once was. Carly for her part is no longer propping Sonny every scene. This movement began with PM but Korte has done her best to maintain that distance.

Of course, the first fight between PM & FV was longer scenes. Korte has not continued them. Longer scenes are just gone.

This is particularly of interest right now because it's been a year.

BTG is far from perfect and has definite issues in casting and scripts IMO, but it feels fresh for a lot of obvious reasons. It has a ways to go on a number of levels but it's consistently more pacey, entertaining and intriguing than trying to barrel through a week of GH.

I'd rather barrel through a week of BTG than barrel through a week of GH.  In fact, I'd barrel through a week of ANYthing before I'd barrel through another week of GH.  (780 characters on this show, and I swear none of 'em are doing a [!@#$%^&*] thing.)

All I know is what was said, the usual, schedule conflicts. I really hated it. I wanted to see him in those particular dramatic beats. The only way I know the show is invested in L&L2 Redux is the flashbacks. Taking old show & doing modern digitizing is costly so we know they have more than a passing interest in the couple. And may I just say the use of those flashbacks has been one high point, so well done. Slow dancing back then, then today. Just perfection. Ric is fun but he has no chance. And, of course, the writers' quote, "foundational" to our view of the current show.

    • For years I did NOT go by Laura's opinion of Luke. Today I certainly do not go by Laura's opinion that Sonny somehow is good for Port Charles. Actually when it comes to being a judge of people's characters, and the issue is Laura, I just remember Esme.
    • Good point. It would provide some conflict with Jack. As much as I am not interested in Claire, I don't find it difficult to understand why she might be a bit reluctant  to commit to a guy who has already been divorced twice or is  3 times?before he is 30. That's a natural obstacle that Claire would be hesitant about. But in GC every relationship is true love and various past marriages are forgotten.
    • He had no chance getting on The Sopranos

I’m in NYC, and I can’t help but wonder if NYC prosecutors, politicians, etc. ever felt the way that Laura did, back in the 80s-90s when they were taking down the mob.  “Oooh, don’t put John Gotti in prison. The guy who comes in after him might be worse”
    • Happy 18th Birthday, Sophia! I like that Tate gave her a birthday party. And that Marlena counseled him about whether or not he has feelings for Sophia, and his relationship with Holly. I like how messy Tate is and I hope he continues to be messy. He just needs to have more argument/fight scenes with Doug III

Days just needs to work a little bit more on establishing better chemistry between Tate and Sophia, but I still think that’s mostly due to Rachel Boyd. Sometimes, I think that Sophia might secretly be scheming, but with the way RB plays it, (if that’s what they’re going for), it doesn’t seem to be working. Tate was also really sweet and dorky during the party too The drug scenes didn’t do much for me though. I don’t mind that Kevin panicked and ran off with the drug once he heard Steve and Shawn coming, but I felt like that story was the weakest part of today. But I am interested in seeing what happens next. And I couldn’t help but laugh when I noticed that Steve and Shawn had matching jackets Btw, I see Mayor Price established a quid pro quo with Xander today lol I wouldn’t mind that being more than just a plot point. It could lead to some pretty good drama if it’s handled correctly. And it would be a lot better than Xander declaring war on Sweet Bits/Chanel and Felicity.  And Stephanie, finally having her mother to confide in about her life, her relationship with Alex, etc. has been one of the best things about the Paula/Jeanne episodes. The book thing still seems very Ron/Jamey-like though, mostly because it’s so centered around Alex, sort of like how GH used to make storylines about Liz all about Finn or Franco Hopefully, Stephanie talks to Kayla about the book. I’d like to hear more of her perspective on it. I also like that Kayla and Marlena were there for each other as well. These are such better ways to use all three of them. And, we got an update about John One other thing I’ve noticed about the Paula/Jeanne episodes (except for the ones that are worked on by Jamey) is that they’re longer than Ron episodes. Episodes usually clock in at around 40-41 minutes now, as opposed to 35-37, or as short as 31. I like that.
    • Also Victor being the obstacle for Kyle/Claire feels forced. If anything it should be Diane. Diane has a history of having issues with the Newmans, doesn’t she? Jack could be the one trying to reel her in while she’s meddling in Kyle and Claire’s relationship. They’re making the characters of Diane, Victoria, Nick, Sharon be way too complacent when they could have a stronger role in the younger characters like Mariah/Tessa, Kyle/Claire etc
    • A year later we had these ratings for the week of May 11-17 1987. This was probably the last time the CBS soaps (at least til Dallas’ finale) ranked this high. Dynasty had already ended its season.  CBS reran the Dallas Early Years movie on Saturday night against Golden Girls’ season finale, which was the failed Empty Nest back door pilot.  Interestingly a repeat Family Ties was #1 this week. The week before the season finale of Family Ties beat out Cosby as well, but it was Cheers that beat them both out with Diane’s exit.

    • Hello to everybody!

I'm writing a series of essays about the first time of a LGBT character in US soaps. I already have datas about Sharon Duvall in DAYS (1977) as first Bisex, Lynn Carson in AMC (1983) as first Lesbian, Hank Elliott on ATWT (1989) as first Gay (someone have or can find the episode in which Paul Ryan finds out about Hank and does not take it very well? I have seen Hank's coming out to Iva and when Hank gets a bullet to save Paul's life from the latter evil father and when he gets tested for HIV after finding out Charlie's diagnosis, but Soap Opera Digest recaps are too much concises...) and Billy Douglas on OLTL (1992) as first LGBT teen in both daytime and primetime TV (I have seen all the episodes on You Tube. BTW, what a great storyline, why it was ignored by the Emmys? Andrew Carpenter and Billy's father players are both really great in their roles! Oh, well, if OLTL was not nominated for Best Drama in 1994 with Marty's gang rape story which won four major awards and was spectacular, no surprise at all - sadly) and I have read something about Azure in The City (1996) as first Trans, but I'd like to see the episode where Bernado finds out and Azure confirms what is said in that newspaper to have something to quote. I like quoting, it gives the essays more depth. I already read the biweekly recaps from Soap Opera Digest on Tumblr and single episodes recaps on IMDB, but I'd like to have more to write about. And something more about critics and public opinions - I only knows that the storyline was rapidly axed because of bad writing and bad performance by Carlotta Chung, but I have nothing to quote.   PS Thank you @JAS0N47 for your incredible and rich site (and work on it). In particular for the Nielsen ratings on weekly basis lists since 1974 and for everything about Sharon Duval - specially for the script of the confession episode dated 23 May 1977! I'm not a DAYS viewers (I'm Italian, I live in Italy and on You Tube there is almost nothing if not short videos), but I've seen some clips of Marlena's first possession (Deidre Hall is terrific in it! Storyline is garbage, but it has its chilling moments and it is funny - I laugh everytime I remember Kristen say to Marlena "according to the book of demonology"! Was she an espert of demons or what!? ) and read on Soap Opera Central daily recaps about infamous Melaswen (brainwashed Marlena has a particular sense of humor - killing ex alcoholic Maggie with a bottle of wine and Alice with her donuts...), so I know something about the soap. Little, but better than nothing.

    • Yes, they did say 27 sets!! I wondered at the time if they could all be up at the same time.
    • I'm curious the motivation for keeping Bela on beyond the circus story arc.  Did he play a character like his character on EON, or was he more of a good guy? I know he ended up with Sunny at the end of the series, but I always thought that Sunny/Hogan could have been revived once the lack of chemistry between him and the NuLiza became apparent.   Actually... the NuLiza (Louan Gideon) reminded me more of Sunny than she did Liza as played by Sherry... and she just threw off the whole vibe of the show. I see Estelle has just arrived in the late October 1985 episodes, which only means that Wendy and Stephanie are soon on their way out.   It also appears that the Sarah/Quinn/Wendy triangle was set up by Mayer.. and it looks as though Tomlin is going to deactivate it by the introduction of Colleen Dion's character.   I don't understand why no one on the show thought to look at Quinn and realize that he was the problem and write him out.
