agreed that it was random. but, i’ll never forget that screen with larry bryggman in a rocking chair saying goodby to their baby (can’t remember the name).

I'm pretty sure it was Johnny. Jen then named her son John Dustin.

On the AW thread, there was discussion of Michael/Rachel. Talk about an odd pairing,

Didn't they try Cass/Donna at one point?

I would also count Felicia/John.

Bold - Taylor and whoever it was available past 2007-8.

Lord, how Taylor fell off after the facelift.

Someone mentioned Sam and Dante, totally agree. Could that be said of pairing Carly with Drew.? I think it was more so about wanting Cameron Mathison and Laura Wright to have screen time together after their steamy "What if" elevator encounter.

For some reason John/Kate made sense to me in the moment.  Obviously it was convenient since both Roman and Marlena "died", but it worked well with John's drug addiction and the Sami/Lucas and Belle/Phillip antics at the time.  Lauren and Drake had some chemistry as well.  I know the entire pairing was extremely unpopular with the John/Marlena fans though.

I really enjoyed John and Kate at the time. They worked well as friends and it made sense when they became lovers at the time. It was wild to me that it was basically completely erased in the 20 years that followed.

No, that was definitely convenience IMO. They were using Drew as a transparent seatfiller and nothing more.

I wouldn't count Felicia/John because it was mostly the template JFP loved on many of her shows - an avatar of herself with a hunky leading man.

Cass and Donna dated for parts of 1997 and maybe very early 1998, before Cass was miraculously repositioned as a more central character and Donna was sent spiraling after Michael's death.

It was completely erased. I am not exactly sure why. I haven't heard Kate mention she and John were romantically involved in years. Weren't they engaged? Lol.

There were rumors years ago the whole pairing just ended up causing issues with fans, backstage, between Deidre/Drake, etc., so maybe it was easier to forget the whole thing? I believe Koslow in particular got a lot of hate from J/M and Marlena fans so she literally may just want to never mention it again lol.

One 'convenient couple ' that worked out was Bob &Kim.

They had a one night stand in 73 that didn't go down well. Bob was married! To Kim's sister!

Kim was painted as the villainess here for seducing her brother in law and punished by getting pregnant, losing the baby and trapped in a horrible marriage to John.

Bob and Kim went their separate ways-Kim/Dan/Nick and a few other suitors.

Bob-Miranda and teases with Valerie/Sandy/Lisa etc

A decade later they had pretty much exhausted all romantic possibilities -and the show wasn't super invested in casting in that age group-so they found there way back to each other ,got married and stayed together till the finale.

The fans were intense at that time, and I could swear we heard that both Drake and Deidre were drumming up stuff for/against John/Kate at the time at separate fan events. Although that could've been made up by said fans. Knowing what we do about Dee I assume that's why it got memory-holed lol.

The stupidest thing about all the uproar over John/Kate is that it was VERY CLEARLY one of those pairings that existed as an obstacle to a major couple. John getting engaged to Kate while he thought Marlena was dead and Marlena's insane geriatric pregnancy by Roman were totally obstacles to the inevitable J&M reunion.

My recollection was that Drake was for the Kate/John pairing and Deidre was not very happy about it. It goes back to an AOL chat or something lol with Lauren and Drake that was very pro the John/Kate pairing and had a few answers that seemed like Drake liked being in a different/new relationship. I read it years ago and it wasn't bad or anything, but I could see how it could get fans of J/M riled up. It seemed slightly disrespectful to Deidre and the J/M legacy.

I remember it being noticeably icy between Drake/Deidre onscreen for a while after that. It was obviously part of the storyline, but it felt different. Whatever, they seem to get over it and were fine by the end of the Alex North story.
