What's funny about RuPaul's Drag Race is that the more broad it's trying to become, the less honest it is. I hope Beyond the Gates can balance this - broad emotions, but true to themselves. Hell, take it as a tag line.

I love the breadth and depth of the sets. These people have money, and I love a soap that mirrors that with great sets that are, yes, "big."

Look at Y&R. One reason we all love the return of the Newman ranch is because it speaks money. What else does on the show? Very little. I you showed a non-viewer some photos of those sets, they'd never guess that these people are worth millions.

Victoria living in the tack house is ridiculous, as is Nick not having a place to live. Phyllis "lost" her place, too. Billy's new place is nice (although I understand the criticisms of it) but doesn't represent someone with a big bank account. I see the Abbott mansion and Sharon's place as iconic, so I'm OK with those, but we're still having nightmares over the ruination of the Chancellor mansion.

It just reeks of "We have to save money so we need smaller sets that we leave up for long periods so we don't need a crew to move them in and out." Then we end up with characters moving from Society for lunch to Crimson Lights for coffee and then back to Society. Ugh.

My hope is that BTG embarrasses shows like Y&R which used to be the standard. I don't need two new sets per week (a la GH). I want to see MONEY on the screen.

Or world renowned designers and CEOs eating at this tiny ugly looking restaurant that Deacon and Sheila operate... that looks so cheap and so... UGH... I cringe every time I see Brooke sit there and pretend to eat something. I don't like that set at all. And then we pretend they are so rich and powerful.

I still don't understand how "the #1 soap" is using embarrassingly bad greenscreen on the regular in lieu of sets but GH isn't and keeps churning out new locations. If anything explains how Frank Valentini is keeping his job it's that wizardry, and I can't fault him for that.

Every soap today has those problems - I remember the OLTL cast talking about it in their oral history a decade ago. "Why are we having so many scenes in the hospital? Because it's up!" The key is how different shows and their producers manage the constraints to keep a community and canvas still feeling alive and vibrant. Y&R can't.

I could really go into as much detail about Bold's awful sets as I did about Y&R's.

$Bill's "mansion"? It's not. Steffy's hole-in-the-wall? Hilarious! The other day (while bored with the dialogue) I noticed her kitchen. It's about 4'x5' and has no counter space. None. Sets-wise, Bold is actually in worse shape than Y&R.

GH is still putting up new sets all the time, but recently they've all had the same design aesthetic -- minimalist and with shades of blue and grey with occasional cream. Then they throw in actors wearing all black. PASS.

Bold started with leading up to Ridge and Caroline's wedding only for the occasion to be completely ruined by the reveal that Ridge cheated on Caroline... on the day of her wedding. She fainted after coming down the stairs... in her wedding dress. Then Brooke read about that in the newspaper and decided to go to the hospital where Caroline was admitted and "befriend" her... And the rest is history.

And they didn't redecorate that kitchen/living room area after Steffy stabbed poor Sugar to death. That's like cringe.

Even if you continue living in a room where you killed somebody. AT LEAST re-decorate HADRCORE.

    • Yes, I know JK is getting on in years, but perhaps he and his family (wife and/or son) could work with him as co-headwriters on the new TEON! I would also be available as a story consultant!

    • It's too bad they didn't see it through. Alan and Van could have married for all the wrong reasons and ended up caring for each other, with Ross in the wings and possibly Rita, too, to cause trouble. Rita was a LITTLE BIT of a schemer. She was kind of the Nola of her era, without the goofy personality. She deliberately went after Ed because she thought he would give her the lifestyle she wanted. She could do malicious things, i.e. cooly seduce Evie's crush (who was played by Jordan Clark, btw) and string him along until she was sure she had Ed. While Rita claimed to be deeply in love with Alan at the time she departed, part of the attraction for her was his money and power. As well as sharing aspects of Nola's character, she was also a more subtle version of Reva-she grew up poor and always wanted more than she had.
    • I'm not that surprised, in just the little we've seen of her she's been a complete natural. Even better than a handful of the adults.
    • Moving on to bigger projects (ex-Rachel Black, DOOL) https://deadline.com/2025/05/little-house-on-the-prairie-laura-ingalls-cast-alice-halsey-1236383465/

    • I liked that Steffy told Liam that he should tell Hope about his tumor. As acrimonious as Steffy & Hope are to each other, I'm glad they don't use their kids as pawns.
    • So early this morning, what I'm calling a crazy fan rumor, saying that the whole GH writing team is being replaced, wholesale, which I frankly don't believe. Wouldn't even post it except to warn others,  y'all, since you also may see it, read it, etc.  Of course what we will do is what we always do, watch the credits & find out what happens WHEN IT HAPPENS!!!
    • I can't wait until he does one of these for BTG.  He's done them for several soaps so far.   LOL at Sara Bibel Video credit to Nnamdi Ngwe from this IG post: https://www.instagram.com/p/DJFOg59RckB/ or this tiktok https://www.tiktok.com/@nnamdingwe/video/7498912705424837919 https://x.com/deepsoap/status/1917700444312461350
    • You could see some kind of Rita/Vanessa showdown being set up, whether it was over Ed or Alan in 1981. (as Vanessa/Henry used the affair to blackmail Alan) But it doesn't seem like Ed/Vanessa were given a lot of time to work, when they only entered each other's orbit in March after Vanessa's "suicide" attempt. Rita's gone by June, it seems and Mart was fired. OG Vanessa seems to be the negative-reverse of Rita. Rita made unfortunate and selfish decisions, but she was never malicious or scheming.  In '87, Alan just seems like the irritant in Vanessa's relationship with Ross. Alan's only real interest in Vanessa was her Chamberlain stock (as he's involved in the weird art forgery/Valere mess and had kicked Phillip and Alex out of Spaulding) and Vanessa and Reva seem more invested in egging each other on than in Alan. When she leaves for Venezuela, Vanessa explains to Reva she wasn't in love with Alan, but thought she could be in a "modern" marriage and enjoy the power that came being Mrs. Spaulding (or something like that). But she realized when Billy called that he needed her , while all Alan needed was a "suitable" hostess. She also tried warning Reva from getting further involved with Alan, but of course, Reva ignored that advice. They even seemed to be setting up another go round between Ross and Vanessa on her exit. They have a tender goodbye, while Alan arrives too late to make an appeal for her to stay.
    • One of many problems of this show. It seems so easy to pick on Ashley and Derek but there's a plethora of issues that have nothing to do with either of them.
