I hope they don't write it that some of these characters are well known in the 'real' world.

I hate it when soaps have gossip magazines/websites etc reporting on the lives of the characters. It's just a dumb plot device that is dragged out when it suits. Sometimes they're famous and sometimes not.

Characters need to be low profile and in their own soap universe.

It's not so much the show/show's producers paying attention to those categories, it's the network/studio that will closely follow the show's performance in terms of ratings.

It's my understanding that The Talk wasn't so much canceled due to low ratings from its CBS airings, it's the lack of viewership from streaming (Paramount+), YouTube, and minimal pop culture references in the same vein as The View which does well on Hulu, YouTube and is a daily topic due to their pivot to full-time politics discussion.

Looking at the broadcast ratings, in particular, The Talk did 165,000 viewers in Women 25-54 to The View's 190,000 during the week of November 11-15, 2024. The Talk outperformed both GMA3 and NBC News Daily, and has done so all season. Similarly, among Women 18-49 viewers, The View pulled in 131,000 while The Talk pulled 115,000. Again, not so different. In the demos The View did a 0.20 rating in Women 18-49 to The Talk's 0.17, both rounded to a 0.2 rating. Meanwhile, in Women 25-54, The View did a 0.31 demo while The Talk did a 0.27, both rounded to a 0.3 rating. Point is, it isn't the ratings that got The Talk canceled because the show is essentially performing on par with The View in all the key demographics that sell ads, despite half the audience (1.221 million vs. 2.522 million). Therefore, it's the lack of ROI for CBS outside of broadcast that made the network decide to dump it.

All that being said, as long as Beyond the Gates does as well as GH or better in the demos, and at least shows a substantial bump in viewership, they'll be happy with its broadcast performance. Meanwhile, they'll be even happier with the show having a big following in streaming, YouTube views and social media follows. It would also be a boon for them should the show skew much younger than the other four soaps, particularly in the 18-34 demo.

By skewing younger, I also am referring to the median age. Currently, Y&R/B&B is about 73/71, with GH at 68/69. If BTG could do 60 or lower, that would be "cool" to them.

Are they some of the oldest skewing network shows?

I know that has been an ongoing issue for years, as the shows tried to attract the next generation of viewers. Even as far back as the 80's when Days decided to move the focus from the aging characters eg Doug/Julie, Mickey/Maggie  to Bo/Hope,Roman/Marlena and change the storytelling approach.

i guess that's why they now focus on the same characters for years and are very hesitant about dropping them, for fear the remaining viewers will be turned off.

    • Daytime belonged to CBS. They would have been making a lot of $$$ with that lineup. For context, this is the lineup at that time. Only one soap on ABC (GH) and NBC (TD) which was still an anthology at that point. So it wasn't until the opposition added more soaps that they became competitive. NBC CBS ABC 10:00am Say When! • Per recent Twitch live: Wraps filming his new film on Friday. Begins a new film on May 19. Will resume regular Twitch streams soon. Has a lot of projects coming out later this year. His current project has kept him in Tennessee longer than he was meant to be.
    • Has BTG been using flashbacks much? Of course, as a new show there aren't many f/b worthy moments but I think they can get by w/o having to use/recreate the Leslie reveal scene. What other 'soap' tropes have they employed or ignored so far? We've talked about the lack of traditional cliffhangers with lingering camera shots. They have done a couple of fantasy scenes. Has anyone apart from Dana had talk to themselves scenes? Montages?
    • Thank You!!! @rsclassicfanforever and to anyone else who contributed to the vaults over the years. I have dipped in/out and gotten my life watching Y&R early years. I never would had the appreciation for characters like Lorie Brooks if not for the Vaults, so again, Thanks.
    • Another lot of skipped episodes to look forward to when the time comes on Videoland. So annoying. They have skipped so many, especially in  season 15 where they skipped 19 episodes throughout the season. Is it just me or is the vault down? It's like a different error message this time so it's hard to know if it's me this time.
    • thank you for uploading the rest of season 12!!! I hope i can get them soon the links down! Thank you again for posting the B&B classic episodes to revisit!!!!
    • Hmm, okay.  BTW, my only problem with Kai & the surgery story is where is this guy's family? And, another BTW, I think I may have inadvertently added to that rumor from last year about a male descendant of Justus Ward. You see, that is an idea I could really get behind! Like I would pay to see those scenes. And, true, I did hear it ... [sheepish grin]

Yes they can. While rare, its not like soaps in the past havent said F that and used flashbacks of a scene even when a recast has been done. OLTL used to do that
    • Well, I am glad to know that & for it to make sense, so thanks for the info &  the perspective, also. At the end of AMC 1.0, I thought the new young talent was really quite good, but I missed Eden & NuBianca just ... well, I wasn't 100% sold on her & Bianca was so important to me. But then, Tad & Dixie were also important & yep, there's another problem, for me I mean. I'm not your typical AMC fan but I hung in there anyway. I know what you mean because it wasn't as good as it once had been but it was still Agnes's show in Pine Valley. Some of that is a bittersweet nostalgic clinging to the past, I guess. By that time I'd been through so many show cancellations. AW, Santa Barbara, PC, The City, GL, ATWT.

Betsy Snyder, when she was at DAYS was part of the WGA winning writing team before she died, tragically far too young.
